Lyr/Chords: Uptown, Uptempo Woman (Randy Edelman)

Can anyone help me save my husband from insanity - oops, too late! This song has been driving him crazy for months. He is after the lyrics and who sang it - was it Billy Joel? We have something like: You're an uptown, uptempo woman And I'm a downtown, downbeat guy. Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks.

It's called 'Uptown Girl'

Click here for the totally banal lyrics

Randy Edleman from his 1975 album, "Fairwell Fairbanks." I didn't find any more lyrics, though.

Looks like they are similar, but not the same. I think I am right....

Sorry Paul, it's definately not Uptown Girl. I know all the words to that one from my 'disco queen' days - which were long ago, I hasten to add. Sorry you are not in a good mood. Perhaps tomorrow will be better! Thanks Sorcha - got it in one! Maxine

I've said this before, but if my name were 'Randy'- I'm damn sure I'd change it!

A google search (uptown, uptempo woman) brought up lots of references- mostly to karaoke sites; you might want to take a look.

Ooooops - guess who's new around here - There's an intriguing website called www.songdiva.com which MAY be useful. I say "may" because it comes up in the search engine for (note spelling) Edelman Uptown, and seems to have a lot of info, a chat forum, and other interesting bits. But at least in my 'puter a lot of the lettering comes out as gobbledegook (not all of it) and I couldn't download the relevant file to see if they gave any lyrics. Worth a try, though. That's a great song -

Oooops again: That's [typing slowly this time] www.singdiva.com. Not "songdiva" - sorry!

The song you want is by Randy Edelmann. It sounded a bit like Billy Joel because of the piano accompaniment and was a minor hit in the mid seventies, I believe. By putting this back to the top of the thread, we may attract the attention of somebody who knows more. I think Randy Edelmann composed other things as well, but my memory can be unreliable!

Thanks very much everyone. I am going to check the www.songdiva site now. I'll keep you posted.

Did you ever get any joy, Maxine? I found this thread by trawling the net looking for the self same lyrics - and I can't find them - so if you've had any luck I'd appreciate knowing. As has been said higher up the thread it was written and performed by Randy Edelman and reached number 14 I think it was in the UK charts of 79. He went on to become a successful film score writer. None of which is any damn good of course when you're after these lyrics. You can get me direct on element1uk@hotmail.com if you have any more info. Cheers, element

Uptown, Uptempo Woman

Randy Edelman

It started out in innocence
The way that most things do
A thousand people crammed in one place
But the only face was you
I grabbed your hand and we raced out
Hardly said a word
I'd only seen you for a minute
But I was round in third

And we traded on our backgrounds
You mentioned I seemed shy
Then you laughed and said,
"I'm an uptown, uptempo woman,
You're a downtown, downbeat guy"

Within a week I'd moved in
At her uptown, Eastside place
We'd make love for hours
On a bed of silk and lace
And she would get up early
And come home late at night
She had important business
But my prospects all seemed slight

In tired arms some evenings
She'd get mad and cry,
"I'm an uptown, uptempo woman,
You're a downtown, downbeat guy"

Well the romance soon was over
And the lust was turning thin
And I soon began to realise
The mess I'd gotten in
But as always happens
When you're caught in such a trap
You get so used to what's around
That you can't find your way back

So I lived with this arrangement
I soon learned to despise,
The uptown, uptempo woman,
And the a downtown, downbeat guy

And then one Saturday in March
I decided I would go
Cause I was going nowhere
And my mind was getting slow
So I opened all the closets
There wasn't much to pack
I felt bad not telling her
That I wasn't coming back

But this day she was early
She looked at me and asked why
I said, "Why? You're an uptown, uptempo woman,
I'm a downtown, downbeat guy"

"You're an uptown, uptempo woman,
I'm a downtown, downbeat guy,
Downtown, downbeat guy"
Line Breaks <br> added.

Has anybody got the SHEET MUSIC - arranged for either voice & piano, or PVG (Piano Voice Guitar) - for this GREAT song?

I can't find it on sale anywhere online! Not even MusicRoom.com have it, & they always seem to sell everything, from single sheet music to entire song books! Nor Amazon.

Interestingly, going off-topic a bit (wink-wink), a lot of searches for this song DO seem, as people said above, to default to Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl"; & searches for Randy Edelman seem to default to Randy Newman! Hey ho, it's the downside of the Internet, I suppose! :-D

BTW, there is a great video of Randy Edelman playing & singing his song "Uptown, Uptempo Woman" - a performance of the whole song - at YouTube:

Off topic I know but I've never been able to remember what 'uptown' or 'downtown' actually is. I don't suppose knowing will help me like the song more anyway.

Most welcome. I found that with a Google of

Uptown, Uptempo Woman (Randy Edelman), sheet music

I'm in Canada, and I've been told all Google pages aren't the same. Here, it is the third site down the page that opens. Mostly luck I think :-)

Sorry, MW. I may be mistaken on that, but it was some such Google.
