anyone have the lyrics of this song please? I'd be thrilled if someone could tell me if there's an mp3 or midi of the tune anywhere. i think it was on the 'b' side of the single Woodstock.

Thanks

Desperately trying to get in touch with my teenage self.

I am perplexed. "Woodstock" / "Scion" was indeed released as a single in 1970. Matthews' Southern Comfort's first (and eponymous) album was released that same year, and it contained the song "Woodstock" but not "Scion." Then they released 2 more albums in 1970, "Second Spring" and "Later That Same Year," but neither of them contained "Scion." A 1995 album was even called "Scion" but that didn't contain the song "Scion" either! Ian Matthews (Some web sites spell his name "Iain.") has also recorded several solo albums, but as far as I can tell, "Scion" has never appeared on any album. (A couple of other artists have recorded a song called "Scion" but it may not even be the same song.)

That makes it difficult because (1) the web sites (such as AMG – All Music Guide) that offer reliable information and sometimes sound files are usually organized by album, and don't mention singles as such; and (2) a search using Google turns up lots of hits, but they usually refer to the album, not the song, and it's hard to sort them out.

Sorry. I've spent as much time on this as I can justify. Maybe somebody else can help.

Thanks for trying, Jim. I agree it's a puzzle and I hope I wasn't under the influence at the time and making mega mistakes... My info is based purely on remembering the song, which I believed I saw on the back of the single. anybody else know?

Cheers

Hi Denny,

As far as I'm aware the only place "Scion" crops up is on the B side of "Woodstock". Woodstock isn't even on the British version of the first album, which was released here before the single, which then went on to be a hit. That album and the single were solo releases in all but name (the backing done by his ex band Fairport). When he had the hit he then quickly formed the band which recorded the next two albums and toured.
The "Scion" CD features out-takes from the second album "Later that same year" and BBC radio sessions.
I have the single, but it's not to hand. I'll transcribe the lyrics on this post when I get a chance and PM you when i have
love, john.

According to updated information at Allmusic.com, the song SCION appears as a bonus track on the 2008 CD rerelease of Matthews Southern Comfort's "Later that Same Year" (originally released 1970).

It's also on the album "The Essential Collection" (1997). Allmusic has that indexed as an Ian Matthews album, but the cover clearly says Matthew's [sic] Southern Comfort.

However, Allmusic doesn't supply any sound samples of either album.

He does indeed. He's a lovely bloke (he is from Scunthorpe after all!); why not drop him a line? He may be able to fill you in.
Here you go...

Hello.
I think seriously that "Scion" is the best song of M.S.C. Unbelievable why it does not appear in any LP with the commented exception. I tried with an english gay friend of mine to take the lyrics by hearing it with low speed, so this is what we obtained.

"Silently they gathered up their fallen pride
and they placed their land upon its knees
searching for a sign of disapproval from around
Oh so silently
Oh so silently
Soulfully I recollected of the time
when I would walk and feel so free
searching for a reason to come a day to change
Oh so soulfully
Oh so soulfully
Peacefully they left it smouldering in the night
and I placed my hand before my eyes
searching for a way to understand what is to be
Oh so silently
Oh so silently"

Hope it helps
I founded the song in the CD edited in 2008 as bonus track. If I can help in anything else don't hesitate to contact.
The voice of this singer was fantastic and the music of course.
Greetings

Woodstock did not appear on the first MSC lp. It was added to the third lp when the single became a hit. Scion was the b-side which never got onto an lp as Iain was leaving the group as the third lp, Later That Same Year, was being prepped for release.

I found an old notebook the other day in which I used to write the lyrics of songs I liked. I'm going back 40 odd years here, to my teen days. Scion is one of those I wrote out. I used to listed to the tracks over and over until I got all the words down.
I agree with the lyrics above, except I had the line 'searching for a reason to accommodate the change' instead of 'to come a day to change'. Since I hadn't recalled the song at all until I found the book, I can't say for sure which of us is right

You're not crazy. My sister had that exact 45-single. I've been looking for it for years myself. Thank you for posting the question, and to everyone who answered. I am deeply grateful to have found it. Now, if I can find the chords! :)

Talk about teenage years...

I had a girlfriend eho was into Ian Matthews Southern Comfort and we listened to those lps endlessly. I still have the lp of one of his later ventures 'Plainsong'. The Woodstock/Scion single should be somewhere in the house too.

The video linked above played without a problem here.
