The Sears catalog men's underwear model

Does anyone remember when a man modeling some underwear for the Sears Catalog showed a little too much? There was a song written about it and all I can remember is something like this, "How I'd love to be the man on page 602" I think this happened in the mid 70's.

Never heard the song, but here's a link to The Straight Dope's info on the occurrence--or non-occurrence, it seems. CLICK

And all we ever got was Roger Moore in a cardigan!

Snopes.com also has an article on it, even featuring a blow up of the offending picture. The link is http://www.snopes.com/business/hidden/sears.htm to get to the page directly.

Their opinion? 'Undetermined' as to the truth of the matter.

Thank you for the responses. This sure brought back a lot of memories. My dad was working for Sears at the time. I was only 19 at the time. I can now appreciate why it was such a stir.

I have taken the time to transcribe the lyrics.

Here they are.

The Man on Page 602
Sung by Zoot Fenster

(background singers)
Look and see you'll agree
He's got personality
(singer)
Hey...
Have you heard the latest story
That's bringing on the smiles?
It has caused some blushin' laughter (heehee)
Some anger for a while.
For those who shop by mail
For all their family clothes
In the Fall and winter Catalog
More than fashion is exposed. (yeah...)

In the Fall and winter Catalog
On page six hundred two,
I see this advertisement
That makes me come unglued
The pictures got me out of sorts
Cause I don't understand
Are they advertising boxer shorts
Or are they trying to sell the man???
I don't know...

I'd send them all my money
If I could make a wish come true
I just wish I was that man on page 602

(background singers)
Look and see you'll agree
He's got personality

(singer)
Ya know... when these wish books were delivered
Anxious people start to look
And when they price them there boxer shorts
They suddenly get shook
Some say it's all in error,
Some say... all in fun.
(background singers) He could be tarred and feathered
(singer) Or maybe even hung.

In the Fall and winter Catalog
Or the wish book so it's call
In my mind there's no question
Of what I'd like most of all
I'd send them all my money
If it would make a wish come true
I just wish I was that man on page 602
Yeah, I just wish I was that man on page 602

I dimly remember something about this when it happened, although I never saw the offending photo (and my parents got the Sears catalogue, too---ah, those wasted opportunities!).

I like the company's disclaimer about it being a "blemish"!

I wonder if Sears had to pay for counselling for the model after calling his whatzit a "blemish!" Do ya 'spose he sued them for indecent exposure? **BG**

I actually had the Sears catalogue with this picture and saved it somewhere, since it was so UNBELIEVABLE at the time! Somewhere in some junk file I have that page from the catalogue. As I recall, he wasn't exactly impressive but the sight was nonetheless shocking...

mr bill d, are you the underwear patrol, I saw the picture and there was a penis hanging out of his drawers, whether you like it or not, it's there in black and white, the only thing I did was to juice it up a bit, and make it spicy, you know the mudcat has a clique, and if it had been one of them to post like that it would have been ok, so I suggest you just keep your comments to yourself, since the evidence is there for everybody to view, male and female alike. I imagine the guy in the ad probably was getting a rise on just thinking about all the young women that were going to get a peek at his rod, and I imagine he was pretty proud of it. BOB. IF YOU'LL CHECK THE INITIAL POST I BELIEVE IT WAS MADE BY A WOMAN, SO HER EYES WERE DEFINITELY DOWN SOUTH NEAR PENIS TOWN.

Hmmm. What an odd eruption in the middle of the thread. The question doesn't seem to have merited an X-rated response. I had the catalog, saw that offending member--the guy was modeling boxer shorts, and wasn't brief enough to avoid detection. I remember that Sears tried to say that it was a spot of ink on the print. Ha!

There have been quite a few instances when disgruntled employees will let things like this apparent accident go to print, or will place them there personally. One must assume that unless the model was also the photographer and layout person and proofreader, that it got past a number of people, intentionally or no. It was funny, and mostly, to quote Johnny Carson, just revealed the guy's shortcomings.

it just revealed the guy's shortcomings

In actual fact, it revealed the guy's 'longcomings'

No-one has an unerect penis that long! Look at the picture again.

I sense an "emperors new clothes" situation here. No male is prepared to admit that their 'member' would only come halfway down the shorts, so they accept it

And dripping isn't nice, it usually means it's not worth it.

Liz,

Out of curiousity, have you ever made a useful post?

One that answered a question, or solved a problem?

Or, are all of your posts just an excuse to hear your own voice?

I'm curious

BOB......that WAS, beyond doubt, in VERY poor taste...however true you may consider it to be. Sorry, but it was.

Paul, if it's pointed down, it ain't erect! But I'm outta here for the rest of this one. . . 'cause I've run out of puns and the company is getting a tad rowdy. . . I duke it out over meaningful stuff, not pecker-dillos like this. (And yes, I passed on the second part of that pun. . .)

Well, I read all of yours, & found very few where it couldnt be interpreted as showing off your knowledge of HTML or how good a 'researcher' you are.

Ok, if you're of the mistaken belief that help is forthcoming on this site only to show how clever the person providing it is....but thats a whole different issue to having a go at people who do other than just that.

Youve got a heavy task in front of you if youre going to whinge at everyone who posts for the fun of it.

...& Wow, you must be a truly wonderful conversationalist... NOT!

Whatever faults Bob (53) may have, flaunting his knowledge of HTML isn't one of them.

Not that I am necessarily endorsing the suggestion that it is a "fault" in the first instance.

Hmmm,

I make links into BClickies for ease of use. I use bold and italic to hopefully make things clearer.

I confess that I did once insert an html table in order to display some tabular data...

You may as well say that anyone who produces a book is 'flaunting' their ability to write...

I say shame on my hubby!! I told him you were right that his comment was in poor taste. But then, a lot of what is on soap operas and prime time TV these days is too suggestive for me. And he didn't start this thread or make clickies to photos.

VERY slightly less...I missed the other one. I wish everyone would go much easier on the crude remarks. There are places where it fits to use certain words......I have used (some) of them myself....but, LORD it gets old sometimes, and really loses the impact when it is needed!!

Notice up there, I was not condemning BOB, only the tone and attitude in one post, which went off on a tangent WAY beyond the joking and teasing. (I had even been defending BOB against stupid trolls in another thread)

...ahh, why try...as I said, one either sees the point, or they dont.......

I did find BOB's post pretty offensive. Not because it contained an off color remark. I usually don't have too much of a problem with off color remarks.

The problem I had with it, whether or not BOB meant it in this way, is that it comes across as being incredibly misogynistic.

I understand that BOB is dealing with some problems that effect his ability to make good judgements about what to post. The way it looks to me is that when a person gets to that point, maybe it's time to take a break from posting until the ability to make good judgements returns. Both for his own sake, as well as for the sake of the forum. My understanding is that this is what he is doing. I think he has made a wise choice.
