Got it, Sorcha - thanks! Hmmm.... no chords, so I'll work out the tab, but I'm not real good at it yet... it looks like it's in C, maybe with an Am?

Such a fine song.....

Lane

No clue about that Lane. I don't do guitar or read tab. Somebody else surely knows, tho.

From the album "Steve Goodman"
This is exactly as Steve recorded it. The story I heard was that he was in a restaurant and got up from his table and got in the path of a waitress. They both moved the same way, stopped, move the other way and Steve said "Would you like to dance?' Returning to his table, he began to jot down the lines for the song.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN TO DANCE
           D A
Would you like to learn to dance?
G G/F# Bm (bass walkdown-hold G chord to Bm)
Well, I can show you that
G A D
Gotta book here, with all you need to know
F# Bm A
We can draw the Arthur Murray patterns right here on the
G
floor.
C G D
And all ya have to do is follow.
F# Bm
And then we'll dance around the room a while
G A D
You can lead now if you want to, I don't mind.
F# Bm A G
Nothin' I wouldn't do to see you smile
C G Bm
Go dancin' 'cross your face in perfect time
C G D
Dancin' 'cross your face in perfect time.
Would you like to learn to sing?
I can teach you that
Here's an old tune that's good for the start
You can sing all the high parts if you really try
And I'll play along the tune on my guitar
And then we'll sing together for a little while
Let the harmony go ringin' in your mind
And you sing so much better when you sing with a smile
All the notes come out so sweet and high.
All the notes come out so sweet and high.

Would you like to learn to love?
Well, that's somethin' else again
I can show you how to sing and smile and dance
Oh, I have no key to open your heart
And no way that I could make you take the chance.
And so we'll dance around the room again
And we'll sing a tune or two to pass the time
And smile a lot and if you really want to
We can try a little lovin', I don't mind
Try a little lovin', I don't mind.
I don't mind.

Billy..... I can try to edit it... but I think you've given me a heck of a good start - THANK YOU! I'm going to need to look up that walkdown from G to Bm, unless someone can help... and the G/F#, but I can figure that one out, I think....

This is such a fine tune, I really am anxious to learn it...... Thanks, again!!

GUEST,Billy .... hey, I'm having some trouble matching the chords that you listed to Goodman's recorded version..... key is off - do you know, did he capo up someplace? I've been trying it and can't seem to find it.......

If you want to e-mail - lwinterm@pacifier.com Thanks

Well...I'm getting close. The chords sound good, but I'm still having a little trouble getting them lined up with the right lyrics.... Billy, or someone... can you straighten me out?

Thanks!

Let's try this one more time - btw these chords are the same as on the recording on my 12-string, which is tuned a half step low. So it is actually Db or C capoed 1.

Would you (D) like to learn to (A) dance?
(G) Well, (G/F#) I can show you (Bm) that
(G) Gotta book here, with all (A) you need to (D) know
(F#) We can draw the Arthur Murray patterns
(Bm) right here (A) on the (G) floor.
And (C) all ya have to (G) do is (D) follow.
And (F#) then we'll dance around the room a (Bm) while
You can (G) lead now if you (A) want to, I don't (D) mind.
(F#) Nothin' I wouldn't do to (Bm) see you (A) smile (G)
Go (C) dancin' 'cross your (G) face in perfect (Bm) time
(C) Dancin' 'cross your (G) face in perfect (D) time.

This is what I’ve got

WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN TO DANCE?
Steve Goodman

Here's an old tune (G7) that's good for the (C) start.
(E) You can sing all the high parts

(Bb) And I’ll (F) play along the tune on my (G) guitar.
(E) And then we'll sing together for a (Am) little while,
Let the (F) harmony go (G) ringin' in your (C) mind.
(E) And you sing so much better when
(Am) You (G/B) sing with a (F) smile,
(Bb) All the notes come (F) out so sweet and (Am) high,
(Bb) All the notes come (F) out so sweet and (C) high. (G)
- Instrumental first six lines as verse above, last chords (G) (G7) (G6) (G5) -

Would you (C) like to learn to (G) love?
(F) (F/E) Well, that's (Dm7) somethin' else a (Dm7/C) gain, (Am)
I can show you (G7) how to sing and smile (C) and dance.
(E) Oh, I have no keys
(Am) To (G/B) open your (F) heart,
(Bb) And no way that I could (F) make you take the (G) chance.
(E) And so we'll dance around the (Am) room again,
And we'll (F) sing a tune or (G) two to pass the (C) time,

The Harry Fox Agency's songfile.com Website verifies that Steve Goodman was the songwriter. He recorded it, and it's also sung by Mary Travers on the Peter Paul and Mary Such Is Love album. It was also recorded by Jackie DeShannon on her 2005 Jackie album. Josh White, Jr., recorded it, too.

Here is what I am playing. It has a 6 2 5 1 if you think of it as in Am. Very jazzy chord progression with that sweet country ballad delivery. Pure Genius!
