I'm trying to find the name of, and the lyrics/chords to a song about the fighter Jack Johnson not being allowed aboard the Titanic. Part of the chorus goes, "Fare thee well Titanic, Fare thee well". It's a somewhat humorous tune from the 70's. Thanks in advance! Kazoo

The Titanic was, as far as I know, originally done by Leadbelly. The version you seek is by Jaime Brockett - who, by the way, is still performing. The entire text of the "song" can be found at:

enjoy.

Yes, LEADBELLY did the song on his Last Sessions 4 LP set on Folkways--That included his rap and his verses about JACK JOHNSON wanting to get aboard the Titanic and him being fefused with the Capt. telling him, "WE AINT HAULING NO COAL!" But then, when Johnson hears about the sinking of the ship:

"When he heard about that mighty shock, You could've seen that man do the Eagle Rock! Fare thee, Titanic, fare thee well."

(By the way, I recorded that song 23 years ago. It's on my album ART THIEME--LIVE AT THE OLD TOWN SCHOOL OF FOLK MUSIC (subtitled: OUTRIGHT BOLDFACED LIES) Kicking Mule Records 150----out of print.

I've been trying to download the PC version of the database but can't get through. Is it that crowded, 24 hours a day?

Haven't seen the movie yet - did they do anything about the alleged fire in the coal bunker (yeah, they were hauling SOME coal - for fuel) being one of the reasons the captain wanted to get to New York in such a hurry?
