Subject: Lyrics for A Nightingale Lullaby
From: Bracken

I am looking for the lyrics to a song recorded by Julie Last called "A Nightingale Lullaby". It starts "The sun's going down in the deep blue sea..." I have the recording but for the life of me can't make out all the words and haven't found the lyrics in any of my searches so far. Thanks for any help.

I am looking for the lyrics to a tune called the Nightingale's lullaby. It starts with the lines......

"The sun's going down in the deep blue sea.
Close your eyes, go to sleep.
I will wrap all the milk stars around you,
Dream and your dreams will come true..."

I have most of the song but the chorus. Any help greatly appreciated. As far as I know it may be an Irish lullaby.

I, too, am looking for information about "Nightingale's Lullaby" (words, chords.) The song is an original composition of a singer named Julie Last. It was apparently specially commissioned for the compilation album "Celtic Twilight 3: Lullabies." Another mudcat thread provided the following information about that album: Celtic Twilight 3: Lullabies (Various Artists) copyright 1996 Hearts Of Space, P.O. Box 31321, San Francisco, CA 94131 (web address: www.HOS.com).

Anyone out there know this one?

Thank you, Masato, but I already have the Celtic Twilight 3 CD. I cannot determine all of the words by just carefully listening to the recording (I suspect that this was also the problem for the original requestor, Braken.) Too many of the words are swallowed up in the mix.

I suppose that the solution would be to buy the sheet music, if such exists. But I don't know how to find out if it is available, and where. Searching GOOGLE on "Nightingale's Lullaby" just provides references to the Celtic Twilight 3 recording. Searching on "Julie Last" also provides no useful information.

Perhaps Ms. Last doesn't mean for the public to have the song.

My favorite lullaby "The Castle of Dromore" and a song I only remember a bit of
"The sun's going down in the deep blue sea
close your eyes go to sleep.
I will wrap all the milk stars around you
dream and your dreams will come true."
Susan

This page has almost the same:
The sun’s going down in the deep blue sea
So close your eyes
Go to sleep
I will wrap all the sweet stars around you
So dream
And your dreams will come true.

It seems to be only on one CD, Celtic Twilight 3: Lullabies, on the Hearts of Space label.

nightingale's lullaby blend in the wind
nests in your ear, drinks the tears from your pillow,
so sleep now, sweet release now.

Ok--I too am looking for these lyrics. My baby loves this song and I feel foolish making my own words up. The June 12th posting is a teaser--if you can get that far, please, give us the whole song!!

Thanks!

Here's my best guess:

The sun's going down in the deep blue sea
So close your eyes, go to sleep
I will wrap all the milk stars around you
Dream, and your dreams will come true.

You can ride past the wind as a champion mare
Over the moors, lighter than air
Your can fly to the moon as a great white swan
And back you will be before dawn.

(chorus from another entry, I could only make out the "drinks the tears from your pillow" on my own. )
nightingale's lullaby blend in the wind
nests in your ear, drinks the tears from your pillow,
so sleep now, sweet dreams now.

I may be older but I am not wise
I'm still a child's grownup disguise
And I never can tell you what you want to know
But you will find out as you go.

The sun disappears in the deep blue sea
Your eyes are closed, sleep so deep
The milk stars are wrapped all around you
Dream and your dreams will come true.

Actually, from listening to the song and reading these suggested lyrics, I'm thinking that this is how the first two lines of the chorus go:

The nightingale's lullabye flies in the window,
nests in your ear, drinks the tears from your pillow

In any case, many thanks to everyone on this page who gave it a shot--I've been trying to figure out the lyrics to that chorus part for at least a year now!

Oh, sorry, one more thing--I believe the line jb has as "I'm still a child's grownup disguise" is actually, "I'm still a child in this grown-up disguise." She sings those words ("in this") rather softly, but by cranking up the volume to ear-shattering level, you, too, can hear them! ^_~

A NIGHTINGALE'S LULLABY
(Music and Lyrics by Julie Last ©1996)

The sun's going down
   in the deep blue sea
Close your eyes,
   go to sleep
I will wrap all the milkstars
   around you
So dream and your dreams
   will come true

You can race past the wind
   as a champion mare
Over the moors,
   lighter than air.
You can fly to the moon
   as a great white swan
And back you will be
   before dawn

A nightingale's lullaby
Climbs in the window
Nests in your ear
Drinks the tears from your pillow
So sleep now
Sweet release now

I may be older
   but I am not wise
I'm still a child
   in this grown up disguise
And I never can tell you
   what you'll want to know
but you will find out
   as you go

Now the sun's disappeared
   in the deep blue sea
You're eyes are closed
   in sleep so deep
The milk stars are wrapped all around you
So dream
and your dreams will come true

Here they are :

IRISH LULLABY
(Alfred Percival)

I'd rock my own sweet childie to rest in a cradle of
gold on a bough of the willow,
To the shoheen ho of the wind of the west and the
lulla lo of the soft sea billow.
                Sleep, baby dear,
                Sleep without fear,
Mother is here beside your pillow.

I'd put my own sweet childie to sleep in a silver boat
    on the beautiful river,
Where a shoheen whisper the white cascades, and a
lulla lo the green flags shiver.
                Sleep, baby dear,
                Sleep without fear,
Mother is here with you for ever.

Lulla lo! to the rise and fall of mother's bosom 'tis
    sleep has bound you,
And O, my child, what cosier nest for rosier rest could
    love have found you?
                Sleep, baby dear,
                Sleep without fear,
Mother's two arms are clasped around you.

My guess for the Irish Lullaby:
Sleep, lay me down
Hold me closely in your arms
And I will close my eyes
Please, promise me
That when I wake up from my dreams
You'll be there
By my side
Love, if you say
You're one step away (not positive with these last two lines)
That I can go dreaming of
Forever more
But I won't rest until
I know you'll be here in the morning
By my side
Here, in my reach
I can see the one that I
Have waited for so long
And, dear, in my heart
I know the arms that hold me now
Will hold me from now on
Love, if you say
You're one step away
That I can go dreaming of
Forever more, but I
Won't rest until
I know you'll be here in the morning
By my side
I dread the Dawn
Lie awake and find you gone
Please tell me
You will stay
Then sleep will come
I know my love has found a home
In your arms all my days
Well, love, if you say
You're one step away
That I will go dreaming of
Forever more
But I won't rest until
I know you'll be here in the morning
By my side
In the morning, by my side

This is the lyrics for Bill Doulgas's Irish Lullaby that's on the Celtic Twilight Vol. 3: Lullabies CD

Lullaby, Lullaby,
Sweet little baby,
Don't you cry.
I'd rock my own sweet child to rest,
in a cradle of gold on a bough of a willow,
to the shoheen ho of the wind of the west,
and the lulla lo of the soft sea billow.
sleep, baby dear,
sleep without fear,
mother is here beside your pillow.
lullaby, lullaby,
sweet little baby,
don't you cry.
i'd put my own sweet child to sleep,
in a silver boat on the beautiful river,
where a shoheen whisper the white cascades,
and a lulla lo the green flags shiver,
sleep, baby dear,
sleep without fear,
mother is here with you forever.
lullaby, lullaby,
sweet little baby,
don't you cry.
i'd rock my own sweet child to rest,
in a cradle of gold on a bough of a willow,
to the shoheen ho of the wind of the west ,
and the lulla lo of the soft sea billow,
sleep baby dear,
sleep without fear,
mother is here forever.
lullaby, lullaby,
sweet little baby,
don't you cry.
lullaby, lullaby,
sweet little baby,
don't you cry.

If you listen you can hear this easily. Philippe HELARD was nearly correct. I don't know how they found the lyrics on the page they posted but I didn't find anything but a list of songs. After having been in choir many many years I was able to listen and pick up the minutes words with the "the"s in there. If you've been in this for a while and have sung things like this, you know what to listen for thank god. ^^ Hope this helps. Mind you, this is the Vol. 3: Lullabies version from Celtic Twilight

"I may be older but I am not wise,
I'm still a child's grown-up disguise
and I never could tell you what you want to know,
cause you will find out as you go"

Does it occur to you (as it does to me) that this denial of all guidance would be far from comforting to a little child?
