Lyr Req: Hi, my name is Joe, & I work in a button

I'm trying to resurect this from my hazy past, but the words aren't all there. Its one of those spoken chants with body motions--not a toungue twister but a body twister.

Here's how I've heard it on a kids' folk-music program on local radio (lyrics in parentheses are for audience to repeat back to the leader):

Hello! (Hello!)
My name is Joe! (My name is Joe!)
I've got a wife, (I've got a wife,)
I've got five kids. (I've got five kids.)
I work (I work)
In a button factory. (In a button factory.)
One day, (One day,)
My boss said to me: (My boss said to me:)
"Hey, Joe! ("Hey, Joe! )
"Are you busy?" ("Are you busy?")
I said, "No." (I said, "No.")
He said, (He said,)
"DO THIS!!"

...at which point the leader performs some body motion that the audience emulates. Chant repeats while more motions are added at the end of each verse. At the end of the series of chants, when everyone is gesticulating wildly, the speaker starts the chant as usual but ends with:

"Hey, Joe! ("Hey, Joe! )
"Are you busy?" ("Are you busy?")
I said, "YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!"

Now, my question to you is: what are the body motions? I've only heard the chant; I've never seen it performed.

Sharon, my recollection is that you begin with left arm extended, hand facing palm out toward audience, rotating in clockwise direction. Right arm comes next, counterclockwise. Then left leg/foot, raised off ground and circling in same direction; then the right. Then head moving side to side. Then the "YESSSSSSS!" I've seen Bill Wellington include it in concerts, but I vaguely recall that I actually learned it from someone else, in which case Bill's version may differ from the above.

Thanks, fretless. I'm assuming here that everyone is sitting down, if both feet must be off the ground at the same time! Any variations for kids who are standing (such as, at an outdoor concert?) Hopping on one foot, perhaps?

In the version I've heard on the radio, the chant has a couple of variations, thrown into one round or another by the speaker to break up the monotony: "Five little kids" instead of "five kids"; "Joe!" or "Umm, Joe..." instead of "Hey, Joe!"; "I said, 'Not really' " instead of "I said, 'No' ".

Thanks for the posts. I've done it in summer camp, and I need some affirmation before I do it with my music students. True to the folk process, I have a different last line and these motions. My boss say "Good, push this button", and I mime pushing a button with my right hand. The next time through its "kick this lever (left foot)", then "turn this dial (left hand)" then "ring this bell (forehead)". I've seen people incorporate ears, tongues, toes and the like before the last resounding YESSS!

My version of the chant comes from the World of Music series (Gr 4) published by Silver Burdett/Ginn (pp.78-79).

For the movements,I've had my students 'turning buttons' with the right, then left hands; then keeping the toes on the floor, turning the button with right then left feet, turning the ankle from side to side. Then add the elbows, as if flapping wings (while still turning the buttons with hands and feet), first right then left; finally nodding the head for the seventh verse. Doing it this way, it can be done either standing or sitting, and it keeps the ambient noise level to a minimum (all those feet stomping up and down frenetically can get to be overwhelming). Also, since my kids know the cant, we don't echo it. You can teach it easily enough - one or two listenings is all it takes, then their off. Let me know how it works for you! lynndeborahk2@aol.com

Hi! my name is Joe I've got a wife and three kids I work in a button factor- y. One day my boss came to me and said "Joe, are you busy?" I said (2/4 bar) "No." He said, "Turn the button with your right hand." (2/4 bar)

Basically in 4/4, except where noted.

Hi1

If for the penultimate verse you say "Are you busy?" ("Are you busy?") I said, "No." (I said, "No.") He said, (He said,) Press the button with you tounge"

the final verce ends up being hillariusly mumbled as you try to form the words around a tounge poping in & out! a great camp favorate :)

the way i learned it was:

Hi!
my name is joe
and i work in a button factory
i got a wife and no kids
one day my boss came up to me and said joe
are you busy i said no!
he said push this button with your left hand
so i did.....

It carries on so after pushing with the left hand it goes
i got a wife and one kid and when he finally goes thru the whole song (right hand, left leg, right leg, bum, nose, head etc) you go to the last verse....

....are you busy i said
YES!!

its a great song, i learned it in girl guides. we used to have competitions to see who could sing it the fastest!!

Hi Lynn Koch,

Silver-Burdett, huh? Other than yourself, does you class (I assume you are a teacher) use them. I've been back and forth on them, though I would love a comprehensive music text.

Thanks to everyone else for some great ideas on where to take this tune. It inspires me to post for more "rhythm" or "motion" tunes.

Lucius - Yes, we still use them, though some grade levels are getting pretty well beat up. At this point, I'm teaching K and 1 general music, junior and senior high choruses and music theory. If I had my 'druthers, I'd be singing and playing for little kids all the time. They're the best audience; elderly audiences are a very close second. Both are extremely appreciative of our offerings.

Rhythm and motion stuff is the mainstay of what I do. Wanna pick brains?

When my neice was about 10, she attended a cheerleading camp held at the college which I attended. Afterward, she visited me & performed what she had learned for me, which included the above chant, complete with movements most of which are mentioned above, as well as jumping, spinning, & other movements which I have forgotten. She also learned something about "Little Jaws, na na, nanana . . ." and jaws kept getting bigger till jaws eats you, or something like that. And to think that the wildest chant I ever did in a music class was the good old "Bearhunt."

Same general patter ....focused on the "efficeny expert" hired by the factory.

The ENDING - which I have seen performed is.....after all the stomping and thumping, and elbow,knee,leg,arm,head,.....HIP wiggling is....

Joe - Yah Busy?
No - Just shove a broom up my ass and I can sweep out the factory for you!

I know it as...
Hello (hello)
my name is Joe (hey Joe)
I gotta house (nice house)
2 kids and one spouse!
I go to work (where do ya work?)
at the button factory!
One day my boss came up to me
and said hey Joe are you busy I said no.
Then would you push this button with your right elbow!

And repeat and switch actions...
It's pretty fun! I'm in high school marching band and occasionally at practice we'll all sing it! It's fun and the band directors hate it(:

He said "Hi Joe! Are you busy?" - I said no

Then it continues with left hand, left foot, right foot, head, any other body parts you can think of that would work, and then the verse goes ".....'Are you busy?' I said YES!"

The way my (marching) band does it:
Hello (hello)
My name is Joe (my name is Joe)
I got a house, 3 kids, one spouse.
I work (Where do you work?!)
In a button factory.
One day, my boss came up to me and said,
"Hey Joe, are you busy?" I said "no."
He said "push this button with your right elbow."

The order of body parts is:
right elbow, left elbow, right knee bone, left knee bone, butt bone, head bone, tongue bone. (on the rep with the tongue out, it goes "Are you busy?" I said "YES!")

I got a wife and three kids and I work in a button factory.
One day, my boss said, "Joe got a minute?" I said, "sure!"
He said, "turn this knob with your left hand" (tock, tick, tock, tick...)

Then it repeats until you go through your hands, feet and head and then change to:
One day, my boss said, "Joe got a minute?" I said, "NO!!"

We do it as a rap!

basically the same , but you can alter the rhythm ...and put in little
sort of grunts and stuff...and we teach all the kids to say it...they pick it up after the first/second 'verse' and we add ['bits'] sotto voce as it were

Yo ,, my name is Joe
I work in a button factory [uhumm]
I got a wife [ugly wife] and three kids [lovely kids][we add that in about 3rd time through - later change the lovely and ugly round]
One day the boss said to me.[whatdhe say?]
He said -Joe   .[uhuh].... I said Yo
He said = you busy? .... I said no
Then push this button with your hand
So I pushed the button with my hand [ok.. here we go..mmm]

Yo my name is Joe etc..... so push this button with....
The other hand
your foot
the other foot
your bum
your head
your tongue

He said Joe I said Yo
he said ..you busy? and I said YES!

Great for a warm up before we do dance stuff - and very popular!

There is a fantastic version that I have heard but can't find the artist for. Instead of adding moves like pushing buttons they add an instrumental rhythm in each verse and the sounds and rhythms layer throughout the song. It is awesome! The words are slightly varied in each verse "Hello, my name is Joe. I got a wife. And I got five kids. I work, in a button factory. One day, my boss said to me. Joe! Are you busy? I said No. and she said, Do this. As the verses continue the singer sounds more and more stressed in both tone and lyric ..I got a wife. I got five little kids (with exasperation). I work all day... "I said, "not really.." etc... If anyone knows this particular artist please share.
