Emmet Ray

I've long been a fan of Django Reinhardt style "gipsy-jazz" and so I was amazed when a friend loaned me a taped movie by Woody Allen documenting the life of Emmet Ray. The reason for my amazement was that I hadn't heard of him before! Judging from the film and archive sound footage this guy was a rival to the great Reinhardt himself! Am I the only Django fan in ignorance of Ray and are there any recordings available?

It seems I'm in good company. Or maybe you,re all busy. Or maybe there isn't anybody out there anyway, and there,s no chat forum! What if this whole thing's nothing but a device to find out my inner-most thoughts and I'm really just the subject of some horrible experimental mind-fuck! I think I'd better have a lie down...Sorry 'bout that, just a little paranoid I guess.

Ahh, C-flat, I'm a Django Reinhardt fan, and confess my ignorance to never having heard of Emmet Ray. I'm a Woody Allen fan, too, but seem to have missed this one. Uh, would it be too much trouble to share the title of the movie? Or, is that part of your paranoid delusion and it doesn't really exist? ~;o)

To help with your mental confusion, look in the mirror and ask yourself: "Am I really here? Am I real, or am I a victim of my own imagination?"

I was also wowed by this movie/Emmett Ray. My son who is way more computer savvy than me says that his music is available on the web. The movie had a whole list of songs he wrote and played listed at the end, including of course, "I'm forever blowing bubbles." good luck.

Not surprising.........from a review:

"Once again, Allen has come roaring back with "Sweet and Lowdown," a buoyant, saucy and deftly original faux documentary that purports to be about a fictitious jazz guitar legend named Emmett Ray (Sean Penn)."

Italics mine........

That may explain why I haven't heard of him! The movie was interspersed with clips of Woody and other lumineries talking (documentary-style) about this great jazz player and all the time I'm thinking this guy plays like Django! It obviously was Django! My apologies.

No apology necessary,C-flat--I think it's kinda funny!

I going to blame the guy who loaned me the tape for asking me if I'd heard of him! However, I can say that I did enjoy the film and would reccomend it. As long as you don't look at Sean Penn's hands during the guitar scenes(and there's lots).I've not seen worse faking since my honeymoon! Oh! bye the way, the reason I didn't name the movie in my original thread,Mary(Giac),was because my friend the t**t who started all this missed off the first couple off minutes (including the title) which if I'd seen them just may have given a clue! I'm going away to regain my composure and when I return can we just forget this ever happened? No? (thought not)

Woody is pretty good at that sort of joke isn't he?

Hey C-flat, I love it. A real-unreal existential experience. And courtesy Woody Allen no less. I am now going to go look in the mirror and try to decide if I'm real. Then I'm going to get out my Emmet Ray records.

That's it! Go on, have a good laugh! I'm just glad my jazz-mad friends don't know about this or I would really be tortured.I've also just remembered the conversation with my pal when he loaned me the tape."Here's a tape you'll enjoy...'bout a guitarist called Ray Emmet...D'you know who I mean" ME:(Half-listening)"Oh-yeah thanks I'll enjoy that!".....It just gets worse!
