Is this what you're looking for?

IN SPITE OF OURSELVES
Written by John Prine
As recorded by John Prine and Iris DeMent on Prine's album “In Spite of Ourselves” (1999) 1. She don't like her eggs all runny.
She thinks crossin' her legs is funny.
She looks down her nose at money.
She gets it on like the Easter Bunny.
She's my baby; I'm her honey.
I'm never gonna let her go.

2. He ain't got laid in a month o' Sundays.
Caught him once an' he was sniffin' my undies.
He ain't too sharp but he gets things done.
Drinks his beer like it's oxygen.
He's my baby an' I'm his honey.
Never gonna let him go.

CHORUS: In spite of ourselves, we'll end up a-sittin' on a rainbow.
Against all odds, honey, we're the big door prize.
We gonna spite our noses right off of our faces.
There won't be nothin' but big ol' hearts dancin' in our eyes.

3. She thinks all my jokes are corny.
Convict movies make her horny.
She likes ketchup on her scrambled eggs.
Swears like a sailor when she shaves her legs.
She takes a lickin' an' keeps on tickin'.
I'm never gonna let her go.

4. Got more balls than a big brass monkey.
A whacked-out weirdo and a lovebug junkie.
Sly as a fox, crazy as a loon,
Payday comes an' he's a-howlin' at the moon.
He's my baby; I don't mean maybe.
Never gonna let him go. CHORUS TWICE

There won't be nothin' but big ol' hearts dancin' in our eyes.
[spoken:] In spite of ourselves.

Greetings ..

There's a song I've heard a couple times .. probably an easy one to recall for some of you. It's a duet (don't know who's singing) .. chorus is somethin like:

Despite ourselves, we're livin on the edge of a rainbow, against all odds, honey you're the big door prize, we're gonna spank our noses right off of our faces, they'll be nothing but....

Can anyone help? thx Kevin

It's called "In Spite of Ourselves" and is sung by Iris DeMent and John Prine (I'm not sure who wrote it). Sorry I don't have the lyrics here but if you look up either one of them on a search engine, you'll probably find it.

Never mind, here it is. I don't know what key they sing it in, but I'll at least give you some chords so you can get the pattern.

IN SPITE OF OURSELVES (by John Prine)

[G] She don't like her eggs all runny,
She thinks crossin' her [D] legs is [G] funny,
[C] She looks down her nose at money,
She [G] gets it on like the Easter Bunny,
[D] She's my baby, I'm her honey,
I'm [D] never gonna let her [G] go.

He ain't got laid in a month of Sundays,
I caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies,
He ain't too sharp but he gets things done,
Drinks his beer like it's oxygen,
He's my baby and I'm his honey,
Never gonna let him go.

In spite of our[C] selves we'll end up a-sittin' on a [G] rainbow,
Against all [D] odds, honey, we're the big door [G] prize,
We're gonna [C] spite our noses right off of our [G] faces,
There won't be [D] nothin' but big old hearts dancin' in our [G] eyes.

She thinks all my jokes are corny,
Convict movies make her horny,
She likes ketchup on her scrambled eggs,
Swears like a sailor when shaves her legs,
She takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin',
I'm never gonna let her go.

He's got more balls than a big brass monkey,
He's a whacked-out weirdo and a love-bug junkie,
Sly as a fox and crazy as a loon,
Payday comes and he's howlin' at the moon,
He's my baby I don't mean maybe,
Never gonna let him go.

In spite of ourselves we'll end up a-sittin' on a rainbow,
Against all odds, honey, we're the big door prize,
We're gonna spite our noses right off of our faces,
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts dancin' in our eyes.

From: GUEST,autumn_75@hotmail.com

I need the name of a song. I can only remmber a small amount of it. It has a man and a woman trading lines. It is supposed to sound very bluegrassy and folksy, but it is a modern song, I believe. One of the lines that I remember has the man saying "ain't got laid in a month of Sundays" I cannot remember the rest. If anyone can help, you will be much appreciated!! I'm sorry if this request os too vague, but I have been trying to figure this out for about two years!!!

Thank you!

Excerpt from this article: Review of Concert for a Land Mine Free World Hammersmith Apollo, London W6 by Burhan Wazir, The Observer (January 20, 2002)

"[John Prine] rambles into a song written for the aborted movie, 'In Spite of Ourselves' - a duet he later recorded with Iris DeMent: 'She don't like her eggs all runny/ She thinks crossin' her legs is funny/ She looks down her nose at money/ She gets it on like the Easter Bunny/ She's my baby I'm her honey/ I'm never gonna let her go.' "

Well, Autumn 75, you have the song... and it only took two years and 14 minutes! :^)

Part of the lyrics made it into this page from a self-styled "folk fiction novel" on the jpshrine.org (John Prine Shrine) site: Sam Stone (page 4)

By the way, some lyrics sites for "In Spite of Ourselves" say that the last line is to be spoken, not sung.

A bit more about the history of the song from this page (another review of the Concert for a Land Mine Free World, held January 17, 2002): http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/review/354006.html

"John Prine also mentioned having been approached by Billy Bob Thornton a few years ago, with an invitation to play his brother in a film [a film so successful that it has yet to be released!] and to write a song for the movie. 'Well,' said Prine, 'I COULD write a song, but I wondered what KIND of song,' – the point being that such songs frequently have nothing whatsoever to do with the storyline- and, he continued, '[you see the movie and] think WHERE THE HELL DID THAT COME FROM?'
"He DID write the song, 'In Spite of Ourselves', which was thereafter recorded with Iris DeMent (a little number that she can apparently use to torment her mother.)
"-This appears on John Prine's magnificent 'In Spite of Ourselves' album.
"[Released in 1999, 'In Spite of Ourselves' is highly recommended by Lynn_Bex, this being a collection of what Prine calls Country "meetin', cheatin' and retreatin' songs" performed as duets with some of his favourite girl singers].

Gee, Joe,

You aren't trying to scare up that "what is folk music" debate. I think a number of songs in the DT were not written by Anon.. And of course, John wrote "Paradise" which has been mistaken as a traditional song by some.

Just for a little FYI, a truly fine version of this song is on 'Full Moon In February' by a great Northwestern duo, Cat Loves Crow. You can download it at their site. Highly recommended.

My beloved and I have been doing a version of "In Spite" for a while now -- always brings the house down! BTW we were at The Concert For A Landmine Free World in London and JP did the song all by himself, which seemed wierd given that Nanci Griffith or Emmylou could have sung the Iris De Ment part.
