Try your local "Lost Property"

"I'm cittern at a railway station,
Got a ticket for my destination..."

If you type "cittern for sale", without the quotations marks, in the search engine www.google.com, there are several sites which come up, such as This One.

Good luck,

kat

I thought a Cittern was a cross between the thing that holds water to flush the toilet and some kind of sea bird...

Ah Well.

Good Luck in your quest

Cheers

We got two just by going to a local farm and asking if they had any. Fine, lovable black-and-whites.

But you sure have a problem with your spelling.

Peter.

Here are two you might want to consider:

a 1986 monteleone
and an 8 string from Stefan Sobell

I am not familiar with Monteleone, but I've seen/heard a few of Sobell's instruments, and his citterns are things of beauty!

oh, and one more here. This one by Freshwater. Freshwater seem to be the new maker in this market and his instruments look good - I have seen/heard one of his bouzoukis and I have to say it is a surprisingly fine instrument. Surprising because his costs is still relatively low, yet his quality is in range of the fine, custom-made instruments. I would definately consider Freshwater, if I was in the market for one of these instruments.

I wouldn't consider Freshwater a new maker but I certainly agree that the instruments are very well worth considering. The website is here.

I guess Freshwater is just new to me. I wonder why he has been placing such quality instruments on the market for low a cost? They are miles above the other instruments in that price range - and I think can be truly compared to the low end products of the custom makers (like Sobell).

Nick Apollonio of Rockport, Maine (the guy who makes lots of Gordon Bok's instruments) makes beautiful citterns. I have one -- 10 strings, tuned DADAD, with a wonderful cello-y sound. Affordable too. E-mail him at memusic@mint.net

I'm really out of touch with prices Jed but the first time I came accross Freshwater instruments was 4-5 years ago and at that time, they certainly seemed to be very favourably priced...

Here's the Mandolin family page of Lark In The Morning Music which does mail order. There are at least three Citterns on the page at different prices. Hope this helps.

lark in the morning, sobel et al are rather expensive. it is much cheaper to get an instrument from a decent local builder.

where are you?

in canada, both nathan currie, and papazian make top quality instruments for a fraction of the sobel price. i've had people say my currie is better than a sobel.

if you are looking for a decent starter instrument perhaps you can satisfy yourself with an octave mandolin. one less course but you can get many models and they play about the same without the extra string. i started on a greek bouzouki and still love to play them, and they can sometimes picked up cheap.

Cheers Jed, Thanks for your help. I went to Hobgoblin in London and played 4 citterns, the best by far was a Fylde at £800. I don't know how they compare to Freshwater but I was certainly very impressed with the Fylde.

Thanks again Martin

If you still haven't made your mind up, then have a look at Diabolus in Musica They perform early music and make their own instruments. Paul Baker (for it is he) also makes them for sale. He's in Kingswinford in the West Midlands.
