I couldn't find anything web-searching either. will keep looking. sounds like it may be something about "Sleeping Beauty"

I may have learned it in French. Does it start about how small she is and is guarded by a duenna, or whatever the word might have been? Is there any looking into pools and seeing birch trees or a swan reflected? I'm trying to think of other images from that longago memory...

Can't say for sure - I didn't learn this song myself - it was something my sister sang.

It does sound like it is about Sleeping Beauty - I'm sure there is a nasty character in the song somewhere - could be the wicked witch.

Thanks for trying.

On the christening day of a child princess, most beautiful ever seen,
Came a party of guests to the palace feast by order of king and queen.
Six good fairies waved their wands, weaved their magic spells,
Gave the child their wondrous gifts, wished the princess well.

But a wicked old witch they did not invite was angered to prophecy
That the tiniest prick on her fingertip would cause the princess to die.
One good fairy saved her wish, soothed the royal tears,
[Bade the folks their lovely child] should sleep a hundred years.

(Not sure of bracketed words.)

This is all I can remember. It was in BBC “Time and Tune” for schools booklet (Sleeping Beauty), Autumn 1972. I have been trying to get hold of a copy for years, but to no avail.

WorldCat lists a book called Time and tune songbook : forty songs taken from the BBC's music programme for schools Time and Tune. Follow the links and you might be able to find a copy in a local library. (I don't know whether it contains the song you're looking for.)

Thanks, Jim! I followed your link and bought a copy from Amazon. Sure enough it has this song in it, but sadly not another one that was in the same booklet, BBC Time and Tune, Autumn 1972, which had the words:

'Then a prince shall awaken the fair princess, his lips on her brow he will softly press, they'll live ever after in happiness, so dry those tears.'

I'd still love to get hold of a copy of the actual Sleeping Beauty booklet.

I was trying to remember this song recently and learnt it in infant school. I think these are the right words. It is Sleeping Beauty but not sure what from.

On the christening day of a child princess, the most beautiful ever seen,
Came a party of guests to the palace feast by order of king and queen.
Six good fairies danced for her, waved their magic spells,
Gave the child their wondrous gift, wished the princess well.

But a wicked old witch they did not invite was angered to prophesy
That the tiniest prick on her finger tip would cause the princess to die.
One good fairy saved her wish, soothed the royal tears,
Gently should that princess child sleep one hundred years.

When the years had passed by, came a handsome prince like dawn on a summer's day,
To arouse the princess from her magic dream and make all the castle gay.
Violins and oboes played songs from olden times.
Sleeping Beauty and her prince danced to wedding chimes.

Thanks, I came here looking specifically for these lyrics and you've amazed me.
Anyone know the one that starts:
"Climb a mountain high at the dawn of day
(scatter diamonds through the sparkling air all along our way)
Hear the mountain call-all, la la la la la,
Hear the echo fall-all, la la la la la."

From the same era?

Here it is, Vince:

1. Climb a mountain high
   When the dawn of day
Scatters diamonds through the sparkling air
   All along the way

Chorus: Sing a mountain call
       Lah lah lah lah lah
       Hear the echoes fall
Echo:   Lah lah lah lah lah

2. Reach the mountain crest
   All the world below
Watch the shadow of an eagle's wing
   Skim across the snow

Chorus and Echo

3. Though you must return
   At the daytime's end
You can sing at last a sweet farewell
   To your mountain friend

Chorus and Echo

Here is a web site that gives a detailed description of the BBC Programme "Time and Tune" from 1972. It identifies the song* as SLEEPING BEAUTY, and gives the first 2 lines. The editor remarks: "To the best of my knowledge, no recordings of this unit have been kept in the BBC archives."

* That is, the song initially requested in this thread. I wish we could keep discussion in each thread limited to one song only, to avoid confusion.

Yes but I remember the bracketed words gently should their princess child sleep a hundred years

When the years had passed by came a handsome prince
Like dawn on a summers day
To arouse the princess from her magic sleep
And make all the castle gay
Violins and oboes played songs of olden times
Sleeping beauty and her prince danced to wedding chimes

Simpler version (Lancs UK, 1950s):

There was a princess long ago,
Long ago, long ago,
There was a princess long ago,
Long, long ago.

The princess lived in a big tall tower,
A big tall tower, a big tall tower,
The princess lived in a big tall tower,
Long, long ago.

A wicked fairy cast a spell..

She fell asleep for a hundred years...

A big tall forest grew around...

A handsome prince came riding by...

He chopped the trees down one by one..

He woke the princess with a kiss..

So everybody's happy now...

We all join hands and take a bow,
Take a bow, take a bow,
We all join hands and take a bow,
Long, long ago.

Performed with suitable actions by 6 year olds.
