I new to the use of printed ways to convey tunes, as are shared frequently in this forum e.g. ABC files and the Midi things. Can someone give me a quick primer on same or point me to a site for my edification.

Thanks and thanks to those who take the time to share tunes this way. I hope to take advantage of it soon!

The ABC files are a standard developed a few years ago. This ABC homepage has the written standard which explains it all plus a lot of software to handle it for downloading.

The MIDI things you see (bunches of numbers printed in red) are due to the efforts of Mudcat member Alan of Australia (thanks again,Alan). Each of them contains a link to the page where you can download the software for creating them and for converting them back to real MIDI files.

If you're unfamiliar with MIDI and MIDI software, there have been a lot of discussions on it previously - do a forum body search on "MIDI" or "software" and you'll get a good idea.

I just wanted to add something about midi.

If you're not getting midi tunes that are easy to follow, it's your computer setup, not the midi files.

I recently got a new computer and soundcard. Midi files used to sound wierd and hard to understand. Typically, they would undergo a strange change as they moved to the high notes -- almost like switching to a second instrument. Now I get this sweet easy to follow piano sound.
