Happy Marriage songs?

Ok you lot, here is a challenge. Who can find songs about wedded bliss (other than the WEDDING SONG). There are plenty of songs about being in love and plenty more about rgretting having got married, feeling at the altar, dying of unrequited/forbidden love and being done to death by your parents for refusing to marry the person of their choice. BUT where are the songs about being happily married? Is it so unusual a state?

There ain't that many of 'em! But "SILVER THREADS AMONG THE GOLD" and "JOHN ANDERSON, MY JO" come to mind. Personally I like the ones about unhappy marriages like "Matty Groves". Much more fun!

Sally Rogers' song, "LOVELY AGNES" written about her grandmother.

"Oh Agnes, won't you go with me?
We'll be married in style.
And we'll cross Lake Michigan
So blue and so wild.
We'll cross over Lake Michigan
Til we come to the shore
And our orchards will blossom for
Our babes as they're born."

"Now three score years have come and passed
Like the fruit on the trees
And our children have children
With babes on their knees
And we all join in the summertime
On the crystal lake shore
To greet lovely Agnes
Now twelve years and fourscore."

Of course, there's also "CUCKOOS NEST" as recorded by Tim Hart & Maddy Prior and by Ashley Hutchings, et al, on "Morris On!" --

(last verse)
"So this couple they got married and soon they went to bed
And now this pretty fair maid has lost her maidenhead.
In a small country cottage they increase and do their best
And he often claps his hand on her cuckoo's nest."

I've had this dilema several times, being asked to sing at anniversaries, etc. In Scotland neighbors of my friend were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary - garden party, big cake, etc. They asked me to sing a song and I was stumped. I said "I can't think of a song that would be appropriate for honoring 40 years of love". "Oh there's nae love, dear, it's just been endurance", said the old fellow. So I sang "THE HUMOURS OF WHISKEY" and they loved it.

They play some of my songs on a local radio station and I was listening one time when the announcer dedicated a song to somebody's 50th wedding anniversary. He said my name and I was wondering what song it would be - it was "Farewell to Whiskey" - where a wife confronts her husband who's been drinking in the tavern all day leaving her and the kids with nothing to eat! Strange!

Mary in the Morning ;-)

**********************************************************

MARY IN THE MORNING

Nothing's quite as pretty as Mary in the morning
When through a sleepy haze I see her lying there
Soft as the rain that falls on Summer flowers
Warm as the sunlight shining on her golden hair,

When I awake and see her there so close beside me
I want to take her in my arms, the ache is there, so deep inside me
Oh, nothing's quite as pretty as Mary in the morning
Chasing the rainbow in her dreams so far away
And when she turns to touch me I kiss her face so softly
And then my Mary wakes to love another day,

And Mary's there, in summer days or stormy weather
She doesn't care, when right or wrong, the love we share We share together,
Nothing's quite as pretty as Mary in the evening
Kissed by the shades of night and starlight in her hair
And as we walk, I hold her close beside me
All our tomorrows for a lifetime we will share,

How about Anne Murray's 'COULD I HAVE THIS DANCE?' ?

West Side Story's 'One Hand, One Heart' (covered by Barbra Striesand, I think)...

'Longer Than...' by Dan Fogelberg

Another beautiful tune is John McDermott's 'Guardian Angel' ("Love is a Voyage" CD - EMI)

From Aussie legend John Williamson.

COOTAMUNDRA WATTLE
Words and Music by John Williamson
© 1986 EMUSIC PTY LTD

(The Cootamundra Wattle is a particular species of yellow flowering native bush.)

Don't go lookin' through that old camphor box, woman.
You know those old things only make you cry.
When you dream upon that little bunny rug,
It makes you think that life has passed you by.

There are days when you wish the world would stop, woman,
But then you know some wounds would never heal.
But when I browse the early pages of the children,
It's then I know exactly how you feel.

Hey, it's July and the winter sun is shining,
And the Cootamundra wattle is my friend,
For all at once my childhood never left me
'Cause wattle blossoms bring it back again.

It's Sunday and you should stop the worry, woman.
Come out here and sit down in the sun.
Can't you hear the magpies in the distance?
Don't you feel the new day has begun?

Can't you hear the bees making honey, woman,
In the spotted gums where the bellbirds ring?
You might grow old and bitter cause you missed it.
You know some people never hear such things.

Hey, it's July and the winter sun is shining
And the Cootamundra wattle is my friend.
For all at once my childhood never left me
'Cause wattle blossoms bring it back again.

Don't buy the daily papers any more, woman.
Read all about what's going on in hell.
They don't care to tell the world of kindness.
Good news never made a paper sell.

There's all the colours of the rainbow in the garden, woman,
And symphonies of music in the sky.
Heaven's all around us if you're looking,
But how can you see it if you cry?

Hey, it's July and the winter sun is shining
And the Cootamundra wattle is my friend.
For all at once my childhood never left me
'Cause wattle blossoms bring it back again.

From: Pseudolus

There's a great song called "I chose right" from the show "Baby" that I have sung at many many weddings. People have mistakenly assumed that I wrote it (mostly because they haven't heard it before) and sadly I had to tell the truth! Here's a couple verses....

First I think about you
Then I thing about me lovin you
then I think about you and me deciding we should be one
It's crazy I know, I wrestled with my pillow all last night
Then I look at you, And I know I chose right

Life's a very long road
And the crossroads come up, right away
And it's so hard to know which way to go, when you've barely begun
But oh the roads you leave behind can look so bright
Then I look at you, and I know I chose right

Nice tune as well....look for the soundtrack!

TAKE YOUR TIME
(Peter Mundey recorded by Loudon Wainwright III)

1. You first wound my clock up on our wedding day
You said it would always be striking
Though the spring's getting weaker and feeble the tick
It's still very much to me liking.

Chorus
So take your time, me lovely old lad
There ain't no reason to hurry
For as long as you're able to wind up me clock
Then I have no reason to worry.

2. I mind the time when we were young
You worked at the hedging and binding
You'd go out at dawn and come home through the dusk
Coming home for me clock to be winding.

3. As time went by, our children grew up
Were soon making wedding vows binding
And all of my daughters the same thing I taught
Make sure your clock always needs winding.

4. And now that we're nearing the end of our time
And you are so tired and grey, love
It still pleases me when you wind up me clock
And it will till the end of my days, love.

Raggytash sang this song to me on the night before I married Geoff and I still fill up when I hear it.

WALTZING AROUND IN THE NUDE
(Dick McCormack)

Edna was eighty years old last July
She's older and greyer, but then so am I
All of our married life, all of our days
We've started each morning the very same way

We go waltzing around in the nude
The neighbours complain it's crude
But Edna and me feel misunderstood
It's not rude, waltzing around in the nude

The phonograph stands on the living-room floor
Next to the sofa, across from the door
We hum all the tunes and we sway with the beat
With love in our hearts we're so light on our feet

We go waltzing around in the nude
Our kids think we're missing a screw or two
Our kids are prudes, they just can't get used
To Edna and me waltzing round in the nude

Time was when we floated like leaves on the breeze
Pleasing each other we'd do as we pleased
Still we're two dancing fools, Edna and me
Though nowadays I'm kind of stiff at the knees

Still we're waltzing around in the nude
And I don't know a happier mood
With what joy I'm imbued and what wonders I've viewed
Waltzing around in the nude

When the coffee is hot, when the sun's shining bright
Sometimes a waltz feels too airy and light
These are the moments when Edna delights
Changing the record to something just right

So we do the polka in the nude
We love all those fiddles and flutes
Then we open a few of the beers that we've brewed
Doing the polka in the nude

We go spinning around and around
Till Edna gets dizzy and falls down
And she giggles, she points and she thinks I'm cute
Doing the polka in my birthday suit

So do the polka in the nude
It works great for us, it will work great for you
It keeps your heart young and it keeps your love true
Like Edna and me do the polka in the nude

Subject: RE: Happy Marriage songs?
From: Jerry Rasmussen

When my parents had their 60th wedding anniversary, they asked me to write a song for them. My parent's marriage was not "happy" by most measures. Like a lot of marriages, they got used to being together and took the bad with the good. I didn't feel that I could write an idealized song about every day being filled with love, so I went back to the year they were married for the first verse:

Back when Lindy first flew the Atlantic alone
And Jolson first sang on the great silver screen
And the sweet smell of Fels Naptha filled every home
And young Steamboat Willie first sailed the high seas

Steamboat Willie was Mickey Mouse's first cartoon

The chorus came out:

Through the good times and bad times
Fair weather and foul
There is nothing as strong
As a bond of the heart

Maybe why there aren't all that many songs about happy marriages is that marriages are rarely start to finish joy rides.

I still like the verse in WAY OUT WEST IN KANSAS:

There was a man who loved his wife (Way Out West in KS
They must have led a peaceful life - " " "
And there's a reason why each night
They hold each other's hands so tight
If one let's loose, they start to fight - " " "

There's also a country song with a line like
"...when your hair is turned to silver, I'll still love to lay you down." Can't recall who sang it--Merle Haggard, maybe?

And then in another vein, but still germane, I think:
from Fiddler on the roof

He was born to be any ordinary man
The soul of a wanderer had he
He passed by and she caught him by the hand
She'd the heart of an angel
And the wings of a dove

He turned 'round and she answered his embrace
Though little more then children were they
He gave her sons; strong and fine sons 1, 2, 3
Real treasure he passed to them
Their mother love did he

CHO:
She gave to him her love
And as the years passed by
They'd sail the heavens above
The soul of a wanderer and the wings of a dove

The wand'rer roams though he's bound to land or sea
The dove she glides from tree to shore
But when they wed they fly as far as they can see
Together they know no bounds
And 'cross the heavens soar

CHO:

Now is he, he's just an ordinary man
Returning as ever to her door
He kisses her face and he rolls her in his arms
Kisses he's given her ten thousand times before

Here's one I wrote for my own 25th wedding anniversary. Hopefully, this can be added to the database.

ANNIVERSARY SONG
(Mike Campbell)

Long ago when you and I were young dear,
I asked you to be my bride.
You were so pretty, and I was so happy,
To have you walk by my side.
And when I put that ring on your finger,
I promised that we'd never part,
Looking back on the years, I'm telling you dear
These words come from my heart.

(Chorus)
You're the love of my life little darlin',
The only one I'm dreaming of,
You're the sparkle of light that's there to ignight,
All of the stars in the heavens above.
Together we faced all our troubles,
Together we shared all the pain,
We've had lots of fun, we have danced in the sun,
And walked, hand in hand, in the rain.

(Bridge)
Sometimes the waters were troubled,
Sometimes the waters were calm,
Sometimes our boat would leak just a little,
But we kept each other warm.

And through the years we've stayed together
I love you even more today,
And if I had a chance to live it over again,
I wouldn't change one single day.
So happy anniversary darlin',
I hope that you'll always be mine,
We've had a good life as husband and wife,
And I'll love you til the end of time.

(Chorus)

NOTE: My wife Tawmmie and I got married in 1973 and we plan to stay together for all of our lives. M.C.

Sonja mentioned "Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms" before I logged in. I was going to mention it because I had heard that Thomas Moore had been commissioned to write it by a gentleman whose wife was suffering from a disfiguring disease. Wonderful story. Very weepy-making....

Gift of a brand new day by Harvey Andrews, Silly old fool by Brian Bedford or, if you want traditional, how about the Lincolnshire Wedding Song?

MY BEST FRIEND
As recorded by Don Williams

1. You placed gold on my finger,
You brought love like I'd never known,
You gave life to our children,
And to me a reason to go on,

CHORUS:
You're my bread when I'm hungry,
You're my shelter from troubled winds,
You're my anchor in life's ocean,
But most of all, you're my best friend.

2. When I need hope and inspiration,
You're always strong when I'm tired and weak,
I could search this whole world over,
You'd still be everything that I need.

Repeat Chorus

CHORDS:

Flying Saucers

    1          1       1
Our (1) marriage used to be,
1         4          4       4      4
Like the (4) sweetest harmony.
1    1         1      1       5    5    5
Everything was peachy at the (5) start.

    5       1         1      1
But like a (1) rocket to the moon,
1          4    4       4      4
It was (4) over much too soon.
    5          5      5       5         1
The (5) day she hit my head she broke my (1) heart.

(chorus)-------------------------------------------------------------
(sound of saucers crashing followed by moans of owww!, 3x progressively louder)
1   1    1          1
(1) Flying saucers,
4   4    4          4
(4) Flying saucers,
1         1       1       1   5    5    5    5
(1) Flying from the hands of my (5) wife.
1   1    1          1
(1) Flying saucers,
4 4       4          4
(4) Cups and saucers,
    5          5    5    5       1
Are (5) breaking up my happy wedding (1) life.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Last night I sure was blist,
when she threw a plate and missed.
I cried, "This is goodbye to our romance!"

But she pleaded as she said,
"Though that plate just missed your head,
I'm your wife and I deserve a second chance."

(chorus)

So to science I declare,
For those saucers in the air,
You don't have to look to Jupiter or Mars.

You can solve this mystery.
Find a woman who is free.
Marry her and you will soon be seeing stars.

(chorus)

Nuts! When I cut and pasted this from Word it didn't look right in the submit message box so I moved everything around and then submitted it and it looks awful! I'll try pasting directly without correcting the errors as I view them it in the message box. I hope this works.

Well it still didn't paste correctly but perhaps you get the idea. Sometimes throwing things can be very therapeutic and sometimes just downright dangerous.
