A friend taught this to me. I'll see if she has the tune or chords or something. This is the song my Timothy (age 6) sang at the Northwestern Gathering.

Alternatively if we can talk on the phone I can sing it to you. I can't do the writing of the music, though, sorry!

I was afraid of that! I've been intrigued by the song sing hearing the tape of the NW gathering...

lets see if someone comes up with it - or do you do PalTalk?

Hi, MMario - my husband learned this from Leo Kretzner's old LP, "Bold Orion", unfortunately now out-of-print. I don't know how to do tune notations, but other recordings of it that you might have access to are the MacArthur Family (MacArthur Road) or Susan McKeown's (formerly of Chanting House) Through the Bitter Frost and Snow.

It's the lyrics I'm after, folks. But I think I have the chorus:

Bold Orion, mighty hunter
Rising in the clear cold sky
See the summer fall before him
Bold Orion on the rise

Is that how you remember it?

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I remember Jon Bell from the Living Museum in Newport News, Va.
I sang "Waltzing with Bears" with a whole gang from Tidewater back in the day...
This is a great service!

Em ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~D
When the days are gettin' shorter, & the nights are growin' long,
~~~~~C ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~D ~~~~~~~Em
And the north wind puts a tear into your eye,
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~D
If you're out about 'round midnight and you look off to the east,
~~~~~~~~C~~~~~~~~~~~ D~~~~ Em
There you may see bold Orion on the rise.
~~~~~~~~G ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Em
You may know him by his stance or the starry shield he holds,
~~~~G ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Em
As he rises silent in a clear cold sky,
~~~~~~~~~~~D~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Em
Young Jack Frost and old man Winter, they both beckon to the call
~~~~~~~D ~~~~~~~~C ~~~~~~~Em
Of their master bold Orion on the rise.
CHORUS:
~~~~~~C~~~~~~~ Em ~~~~~~~~D ~~~~~~~~Em
Bold Orion, mighty hunter, rising in a clear cold sky,
~~~~~~C ~~~~~~~~~~Em~~~~~~~~~~ D C ~~~~~Em
See the summer fall before him, Bold Orion's on the rise.
2. For seven starry ages he has ruled the winter skies
With the fires of lost eons in his eyes,
He has seen the rise and fall of kings and continents and all,
Rising silent, bold Orion on the rise.
When he ascends, no hesitation, when he moves, no turnin' round,
Like a soul been called to glory, Earthly born but heavenly bound.
Now the bird is on the wing, and its southward that she flies,
Hastened on by bold Orion on the rise.
CHORUS
3. Orion had a lover, she's the goddess of the hunt,
And of the forest and the golden moon.
Artemis they called her, the fair sister of the sun;
But their time together ended all too soon.
Apollo took his vengeance on the man his sister loved,
An arrow sped him to a painful death,
But once a month she visits him, a moon among the stars,
Looking down with whispered love upon her breath.
CHORUS
4. Summer comes on all too slowly, and it passes far too fast,
And you wonder is there nothin' that can last,
Here today and gone tomorrow as the green leaves turn to red,
As the present quickly turns into the past.
Cut the wood and stack it high now, stoke the fires in your home
Burnin' nightly send the smoke up to the sky,
Keep the winter at your door and keep the summer in your heart,
Drink a toast to bold Orion on the rise.
CHORUS 2X
It appears to be on an available recording here.
A local group, "Just Friends," sings it, but hasn't recorded it. Great song!
Since this is the open thread, it should contain the credit, too: words and music by Leo Kretzner (c) Heartwood Records, 1983 BMI.
Hello folks,
Sorry for belatedness in responding, but I had no idea it was being sought! Thank you all for your interest.
However, I must tell you, I've never see that third verse before!! It's lovely, but I don't know where it came from. This is literally the first time I've seen or heard of it! Any info on this?
I've moved quite a bit, but am now settled in Southern California. The research job ended and now I write about biomed and continue to play music. I'm in a celtic string band playing dulcimer + guitar called Old Grey Cats; also playing electric bass in a classic rock band a la Neil Young and such, called Rusty Dogs. Cats and dogs - what are the chances? (I joined the dogs before knowing if they even had a name yet)
I am yet attempting to create a new website and will try to be more findable. Please send info on mystery (to me) 3rd verse! Regards,
Leo
Thanks for posting to this thread, Leo. I found credit for that 3rd
verse listed here:
Verse 3 by Jon Bell
I first heard it sung by the MacArthur Family, and think of it each time I look at old, bold Orion in the night sky.
That link is wrong. I found it as a PDF on http://www.horntip.com/. I'll try to find the correct link for you.
