BS: I need a tune for this poem...

For all those out there who are into Celtic music, I need a tune (either traditional or composed by you) for this poem.

Backround: Last March I was staying with a friend in Chicago. One morning I woke early with the sun coming in the window and these words were in my head. I started with the first line and they just tumbled out. A tune too, but I'm not happy with it. Too chant-like. I imagine something slow and Celtic, with lots of ornamentation.

Oh yes, while I don't feel I can really claim authorship, if this really does come out of me and not some Spirit, it must have its source in some way from William Butler Yeats' "Song of Wandering Aengus", and I often fancy it's the shape-changer's answer to his yearning...

Or maybe it's an answer to the question "What do women really want?"

Since I don't know how to do the line breaks, I'm just inserting slashes so if some kind soul wants to "re-format" it for me he/she is welcome to do so...

(Oh PS I have asked my firend Patrick for a tune, so if he can come up with it before anyone else he has first dibs-- but I've been waiting almost a year...)

Willy, why do I fevered in my bed lie...
I for the sun sigh, I for the moon cry.
Willy, bring me the sun and the moon
and I will rise and follow you
In my golden gown, In my silver shoon.
I will follow you over the sea
and not once look behind me
and all I own I'll give to thee...

And I'll follow you into the hills
and into the fairy mound if you will;
and taking my place in the fairy ring
I'll dance to the music of the fairy king
and dream sweet dreams where the fairies sing.
And in the night I'll lay me down
In my silver shoon, in my golden gown
and you'll take off your fairy crown.
And I'll feed you kisses one by one
mouth to mouth and tongue to tongue!
and when we've done with all our kisses
we'll go on to other blisses.

But Willy, first I ask this boon
Bring me the sun and bring me the moon.

Thanks Folks,

I will make a pass at putting it to a tune, if you like.

Send me a PM with your email address so I can get it back to you for review in due course.

I'm into Celtic very muchly Bear, but the tune that comes to mind for me isn't very Celtified.

You're not uniformly metrical in writing the poem, which is cool, but hard to set a tune to. This would almost be better suited to an orchestral tone poem (Ala Phil Ochs, Pleasures of the Harbor). Something very weird came to mind, but since you didn't ask for weird, I worked out a perpetual pipe solo (in two modes) that you could sing it to with not much editing from verse to verse... I assume the last 2 lines were supposed to be a tag?

The solo sounds almost more medieval like than Celtic, but its still pretty cool. Mind if I email it your way, Bear?

It's a lovely poem. Can't wait to hear the tunes that people write for it.

But... what's a shoon?

Shoon are those things you put on your feet to make walking in pastures more bearable. Archaic quaint plural of "shoe".

Shoon, shoon, I'm a macaroon...

I think the old song says. I could be wrong, though.

Hey thanks for all the good thoughts, etc.

I am very open at this point to anything--- It's just that Celtic is what I sing so somethingn compatible would be fine.

Kat, I KNEW you'd like it! Thank you, love...

Amos I will send you a PM. Thanks for the lovely compliment.

Philibuster, the medieval thing sounds fine too. I LIKE weird.

I just wrote it the way it came out. Some of them come out like Appalachian ballads, some like blues and some like chants. Some sound pretty Celtic...

More later...

Thanks for all good thoughts! With so many great musicians around here it's a bit intimidating to put one's stuff out there-- even if one isn't quite sure where it came from or whether to take credit... But it's also the perfect place for collaborations of this kind.

Morticia, I'm always glad to share-- When the tune thing is sorted out I'll let you know...

Thanks for the footnotes on "shoon"-- it is archaic, but it rhymes better?

Read this last night just before bed and had a tune going through my head all night. I'll try to get it down on paper (electronic variety) and PM it to you in a day or two.

gorgeous! I just sat and read it and made up a melody as I did so. This thing will write itself!

I would be happy to try and make a little tape of anything solid I come up with. It might be helpful to have some idea of the structure you want; is there a chorus that repeats? if so, what are the words you'd want for that?

Hi Nightwing--didn't know you hung out here! Yes please, PM me.

Peg-- it just came out that way. No chorus, but I don't mind minor changes if it doesn't unbalance the sense of the song... The Sun and Moon theme is what holds it together for me, so it would feel like any refrain would echo that, but play with it and see what happens.

With all this tunefulness around I might have to ask the Muse for more words... a sequel...
