Tech: Mudcat is Back

From: Max

Hi guys, I can tell by the lack of activity of late that you are all probably put off at the mudcat now because of all the problems. Let me assure you that it was well worth the trouble. We now have a 10 times faster connection to the net, and a much faster database and a faster machine. We are most of the way there tonight, and should get the rest of the way there tomorrow and the next day. So enjoy the few improvements tonight, and be patient for the next couple of days for the rest. This is going to be great.

Well, Gene owes $175. I kept getting e-mails from him with grumbles about Mudcat withdrawal. Sure is nice to be back. Now Max, once you get all this good stuff up and running, come back and talk with us again. We like to have you around.

I'm always here Joe, just don't have a lot to contribute. I built this to learn not talk. Just a kid you know.

I second the motion on the best website around! Just got my Mudcat T-shirt in the mail and I'm looking forward to wearing it out in the world.

I think I feel vaguely like doll house furniture. So much is better than anywhere else on the web..... and you guys are still making improvements.

Bo (this is great, great I say...)

A rubber stamp of the above..I must admit I was a bit taken aback when I couldn't get in. I got your Email talking about the huge coin you are investing in the system. How do you gather it? No one has mentioned anything about fees, or costs... I, as well as others, would certainly not be reticent about kicking in something to help support such an enjoyable and entertaining activity. Keep up the good work..by the way, does this mean the chatroom is under control now?

The cashola came from Onstage, our for-profit company. Good fortune has come our way. You can simply give your gratitude by refering web work, custom programming, and R&D to Onstage. You will see in the next month or so a few mudcat fundraisers. We are trying to get more time committed to the project and the only way to do that is to afford people. We're hoping to free up some of Dick's time and maybe get a full time person or two to really get this thing going. I'd like to see more music, stories and bio's and make this more of an interactive publication. I will probably put out requests on the mudcat to submit writings and such to increase our content base and make sure that everytime you check back there is something new to look at (besides the forum).

Max,

One problem I've found with wearing the mudcat T shirt is that I need some sort of handout to go with it.
People read the URL but I'm sure that most of them forget it right away. What do you think about producing some cards, or maybe post it note packs, with Mudcat info?

Bert.

I am also glad to see mudcat back again. I am experiencing two problems.

First the "reply to Thread" function seems to time out sometimes before the reply is posted. This is when everything else seems to be working.

Second. When you send a message to someone, the menus giving the choices of people scroll by too quickly (probably a consequence of the new higher speed) and I can't react fast enough to take my finger off the mouse button on time. Is there a way to make these menus scroll backwards as well as forwards.

(BTW Our local Public Transport Bus website present the same problem with their timetables.)

Murray

Hi, Murray, I think there must still be some bugs for Max to work out. I get a lot of timeouts and error messages when posting messages, too.
When you send a personal message, scroll through the list of numbers by single-clicking the scroll bar on the right side of the list of names - that should move through the names one at a time, or you can shortcut past a lot of names by entering the first letter of the recipient's name.

Bell Atlantic is late with the final piece of the pie. They tell us tomorrow every day. Cross your fingers, pray, or send them bad jujus, but I'm doing all I can. Bell Atlantic must be the worst company on the planet. I can't beleive anything works with them.

Thanks Joe. I will try the typing in of the first letter with our public transport site too.

This is the first time I am giving the new mudcat a real workout, and it certainly seems a lot faster.

Seems to be working very well, Max. We'll give you a gold star for this one, fer sure.
Say, Max, I was wondering.... Some of us have been posting links in the forum that refer to songs in the database. The links point to songs in the October 1997 edition of the database. Does that mean that all those links will go dead when the April 98 edition comes out? do you want to give us any pointers on do's and don'ts of posting links in the forum?

GaryD: seems that all you need to do is to reset your cookie. The link is on the forum page, and all you do is enter your email address and submit. Check to make sure your cookies are on in your browser settings.

Joe: For now, I think the answer is that the links may change each new version of the digitrad. I would like to solve this so permanent links can be included into the forum. There is a way to do it come to think of it without the codes. You can "hardcode" an exact search and get the pre-screen. Like if you wanted to to make a link to ABDUL EL BULBUL, EMIR!, you make you link like this:

http://www.mudcat.org/!!-supersearch99.cfm?request=%5BABDUL+EL+BULBUL%2C+EMIR%21%5D

I will try to think of an easier way.
