See a family doctor, ask for a referral to a skin specialist. These outbreaks can be minimized.

Jenny, Smile! very few people see the spots as you do. I am afraid that medication is probably the only solution. Most people see the person inside. So, think beautiful!! When you are older, birth control pills can aid in reducing outbreaks, but I still have them at my old age.

When I was a kid we mostly relied on over the counter stuff, which may have helped but only to a point. But now dermatologists can prescribe medications which are really helpful. I agree with the other opinions here - consult a doctor and I think there are lots of options available.

Benzel peroxide 10% solution can help but it is a SEVERE drying agent--dries out your skin too. Retin-A can help but only with a Dr. supervision. Ultra violet light can help, but be CAREFUL!! Diet can make some difference, but not always. Anitibiotics can help (tetracycline), but again a Dr. is necessary. Anitibiotics can clean all the Good Guys out of your gut if you are not careful, then you end up in bad shape and possibly with a candida infection where you DON'T want it.

See a dermatologist. There are new medications available now that are MUCH better than anything that was around before. It's not his fault, and it's very treatable. While I'm generally supportive of "alternative" treatments, this is one of the diseases for which the prescription medications, under a doctor's care, are clearly best. And do go right to a dermatologist if it's more than a mild condition (which it sounds like this is); some of the better medications should only be used under a dermatologist's supervision.

Here's an informational pamphlet from the American Academy of Dermatology. Feel free to send me a personal message if you have specific questions.

Aloha,
Mark

Here's an old hippy trick use patchoulie oil not on the spots but dab a bit on your neck - I used it as a teenager and never had any spots If that fails see the other posts

Thanks all, its not me but my daughter. We have seen a skin specialist, and what they prescribed burnt her skin, and made it very sore. We have tried just about all the usual chemist and dr's remedys, including anti-biotics, with not much effect.

Thanks all for your replies.

Smallpiper, where can I buy patchoulie oil in the uk, I have never heard of it.

Mark, thanks will pm you.

Patchouli oil should be available at Indian or Pakistani stores.

I still get breakouts occasionally as an adult and have found that really simplifying my skin care routine helps. Not sure f this will help for a teen because the breakouts are also hormonally based. But I knwo that all the drying chemical-laden things I used back then seemed to further a vicious cycle...

Get some rosewater and add a few drops of lavender essential oil. Use a clean, HOT washcloth to lay atop the skin and clean and open the pores. Then dab with the rosewater on a soaked cottonball. Do this before bed and in the morning. I t just may help the situation an dnot cause all the irritation (and, often, stimulation ofoil glands) that drugstore acne preparations can...

good luck to her! Drinking lots of fresh water and eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies will also help; as will enough exercise and adequate rest and good diet, etc. Oh, and change pillowcases often if facial acne is a problem.

Dear Nellie,

If your daughter is willing to look at some alternative medical options, I think she'll find some good information on these sites:

I know it is hard to say to a child who sees the damage... but when all else fails, I forget who said it, a painter or photographer, maybe Stiechen, (lovely old fellow a common friend told me) well anyway, we get the face we deserve, and what ever we are given we project who we are. I was, in my teens and twenties in love with a girl with really bad acne problems, and she radiated her love of life and adventure, I don't think many of those of us who loved her, ever noticed her acne. So, keep trying the medicine, but also, remember that folks see what we project more than in which shape we are born. (other than a few idiots who should not get her down!)
Cheers and best wishes
Larry

Growing old usually does the trick.
Well don't do it too soon, enjoy the other things youth gives you. Don't let us old fogies say it is wasted on the young!

You may do well to take the offer from Mark Cohen, and send him a Personal Message (click on the "Personal Pages" link on the menu at the top of this page): Mark is a medical doctor! He may be able to answer questions that the rest of us are not qualified to do.

i had this problem for years and i found the only thing that FINALLY helped was tea-tree-oil. the smell would knock you but washing your face twice daily in a tee tree face wash and using a treatment stick afterwards really worked wonders for my skin.

but, what might help one person mightnt help another.... but its worth a shot!

best of luck!

iRiShBaBe,

You beat me to it. I've often wondered whether tea tree oil would work for acne. It's my main ingredient in the first aid box. It works wonders on many other problems.

Thursday Plantation tea tree oil

http://www.thursdayplantation.com/first_aid/top_to_toe/solution2.html

This is the original company which launched tea tree oil in Australia. The quality of its oils and related products is excellent.

(Usual disclaimers, no connection ot company, etc)

Here is the miracle that works for my daughter. It a prescription from our family Dr. called DALACIN T. You apply it twice a day for 5 days. It worked almost right away! It gave her back her life. Acne can be so distressing for a young person ... I hope this helps!

As for pore-cleansing, a damn good 3-hour sauna does wonders.

According to Jeanne Rose's herbal body book, acne is a result of excess oil on the skin.Things like cold creams, greasy creams and make-up should be avoided. Nutrition experts say to increase fatty acids, niacin, vit.A and C
An acne herbal steam in equal proportions. You will need 2-4 T. of herbs per steam
Licorice root, Violet leaves(fresh if possible), Comfrey root, Dandelion, Dock and White Willow bark.
Acne Facial Mask- Mash a Guava, strain the juice use the pulp on clean skin, while sitting in the tub or in the sun. Rinse it off after 10-20 min.
Acne Compress- Chop up cooked white onions in a little warm water, and apply the hot pulp several times throughout the day. Besides onions, which contain sulfer, you can use boric acid crystals, birch bark, wintergreen, dandelion, parsley, comfrey, kale, or watercress.
Good luck to your daughter

vinegar is a good astringent - so is rubbing alcohol after using antibacterial soap twice a day - go to AT LEAST five fruits and vegitables a day and no fried foods of ANY kind.

Many, many thanks to you all. We are trying patchouli oil, mixed with almond oil base. My daughter's face is a sight to see, almost clear, she is smiling.

I will keep all you other notes in mind, should this turn back on us.

Thanks once again, mudcatters are great

In the teenage witch suicide thread there are some good web references if this moves towards depression.

a little while ago I posted a query for help on this subject and had lots of helpful replies. I cannot find the post again, so apologies to all who replied but am asking again. My daughter is still having dreadful problems with her skin, Mark, I think it was who was a doctor said pm him and I tried various other alternative treatments and then have been unable to find the subject again. Her acne is now getting worse and worse. I have tried so many things, and they all work for a little while and then it gets worse again. I now have a very depressed teenager. Thanks in anticipation

first off, know that when ANY healing (or detoxification) occurs in the body there is first a "healing crisis" which makes symptoms appear worse. In the case of acne, if the body is ridding itself of toxins, those will show up in the skin before they are eliminated, so pimples will probably get worse temporarily...If your teen keeps eating healthy foods (especially fresh fruits and veggies) and drinking lots of water, getting enough sleep and exercise, cleansing her face gently and simply (try those hot steaming clean washcloths to open pores, and clay masks help, too), sleeping on fresh pillowcases, and in general not worrying too much (stress causes breakouts too), she should see an improvement before too long...
