I imagine this is probably a copycat send-up thread. But I am not too embarassed to say that I'd love to see what the Mudcatters have to offer on this one. Not for me, of course. For a friend of mine.

it is a genuine question but I'll see how I gert on before I return to pestering for lyrics/chords etc.

Obviously, there are dandruff shampoos. Assumingly, you have tried them. Logically, the next step is a dermatologist. Or are you asking after home remedies and the like ?

There is every possibility that it is NOT dandruff, which is quite a rare condition but simply a dry scalp which would tie in with dry skin on your face.Has anything changed in your diet, are you unusally stressed, have you changed your shampoo or soap?Any of these things can affect your hair condition.A mild shampoo, like baby shampoo, and a good conditioner will help as will almond oil combed through, left on for ten minutes and then washed out with said mild shampoo. After washing your face, rub on a little oil while it is still damp.Hope this helps.

It does look like large dandruff, I've never had it before until a few months ago but it is especially bad on my head , under my eyes, temples and right upper lip. Almond oil i haven't tried although I do have some for my guitar. I'll give it ago, it;'s really starting to piss me off.

Why don't you shave all your hair off and stick your head up your ass. If that doesn't work nothing will

Why be embarrassed?

I have psoriasis - it means that I get "plaques" of red, flaky skin all over my body. Sometimes it's itchy, usually it's just unsightly. I don't get it bad on my face, but there's usually a patch or two there. Ho hum.

Washing your face twice a day using a fairly coarse face flannel will keep the facial ones from being too flaky by removing the loose skin - you'll still have visible red patches, but they won't be flaky. I find coarser soap works better than moisturising ones by taking the flakes off better; moisturising soaps seem to preserve the flakes so that bits don't fall off but the patches look worse

I use coal-tar soap - coal-tar helps improve skin conditions (why, I'm not sure), although I prefer this soap anyway. As for the dandruff, Alphosyl shampoo (also a coal-tar product) does a fairly good job if used at least every other day (it's the only shampoo that's done anything for my dandruff).

Psoriasis improves with exposure to sunlight, so wearing shorts in summer and getting a decent tan may improve it - on the same principle, I've heard that going on a sunbed can help, but I've not tried it. There's no real cure, all you can do is stop it being too unsightly. Steroid creams can cover it up, but aren't good for you long-term. Other creams are just moisturisers and don't really solve anything.

Skin conditions are odd, mainly since no-one knows what the hell they are or how they work. Sometimes it's just down to how a person is - in my case it seems to be linked to me being a bit "twitchy" and having too much nervous energy. Sometimes it's down to stress - psoriasis is known to be linked to stress. Sometimes it's environment - my wife gets dry skin from washing in hard water. Sometimes it's allergies - a friend had really bad eczema which turned out to be an allergy to wheat and milk products (he tried a diet without those for a while and his skin did improve, but he's now decided to live with the eczema and enjoy himself! :-) Sometimes alternative therapies work (chance/placebo/anything real? don't know, but it's not worked for me).

Graham.

PS. That's a "plaque" not a "plague"! :-) That's the technical term for the small roundish patches you get with skin conditions.

Graham.

PPS. AFAIK, most flaky skin conditions are not infectious. If it starts to "sweat" or becomes seriously inflamed, it's probably a fungal infection and can be passed on to other people - get to your doctor and get some cream for it.

tea tree oil shampoos work very well for this. You can also add tea tree essential oil directly to your regular mild shampoo. The tar and chemical ones are quite harsh but some people like them. Just add a drop of tea tree to the amount you use per shampoo.

An old(-ish) technique I was told, was to crumble an aspirin into the shampoo bottle (I'm not sure of the dosage) but why this should work (apart from altering the pH sligtly) I don't know.

My Dandruff was so bad I was known as Snow White UNTIL,I was given a prescription from my Doctor for NIZORAL SHAMPOO, produced by Janssen Cilag of High Wycombe in Bucks. Great stuff, no, I don`t work for this firm, but, I can tell you the Shampoo worked for me. Snow White.

It may be that the problem is not one basically to be fixed "from the outside" but rather a nutritional one. I understand that a shortage of certain essential oils in the diet can result in dry, flaky skin.

My Beautiful Wife is what you might call a nutrition wonk, and perhaps can fill me/us in on this. I'll ask her and try to get back.

I just remembered that what's lacking in the diet that I referred to as "essential oils" is certain fatty acids. As I said before, I'll confer with my B.W. and get back.

If it itches, I'm pretty sure it's psoriasis. You can control it with a prescription ointment called Clobetasol Propionate 0.05%. It contains steroids, though, so ask your doctor about side effects.

I checked with my wife, "Mrs. Nutrition", and she says to go to a health-food store and get a bottle of an essential fatty acids blend. There are, I understand, several brands; any one of them would be good. It will contain such things as flax-seed oil, Evening Primrose Oil, and/or various other plant sources of essential fatty acids.

I get eczema (very mild, but enough to annoy me) and my scalp gets dry and itchy from it. Snake oil bar from Lush (handmade bath stuff - brilliant shop) is great for scalps, and even better if you can get someone to massage it in for you (it's in their product list under "massage bars" rather than "haircare" by the way). They also make a fantastic body moisturiser called "Dream Cream" which is great for easing eczema.

CarolC, is it just a need to be noticed and seem smart that makes people react like you did, or did you somehow feel threatened by this thread? Either way, I'm glad Mikey had faith in the knowledge and advice that is to be found at Mudcat, because I've found this thread useful and interesting. And I don't suppose Max will begrudge the space it's taken up on his servers.

No, Fionn, I actually wanted to read what people had to say about this subject, as one who suffers from this problem myself. But I saw that there was also a thread right next to this one when it was started about head lice. Being a bit of a realist, I knew there was a chance that this thread was a copycat, especially since it was started anonymously. I felt that if I addressed that possibility, I might help this thread to be treated less harshly than it might be otherwise.

Now that you have psycho-analysed me, maybe you can explain what your motivation is for automatically assuming the worst about my motives. From the tone of your post, it sounds like you really dislike me. Not sure why you would feel that way about me, and I suppose there's not really very much I can do about it.

Does anyone know if there is an equivalent of Alphosyl available in the US?

Guest who recommends vinegar rinses, is that pure vinegar, or is the vinegar mixed with water. And if it is, what's the ratio?
