05 Apr 98 - 08:36 PM (#25222) Subject: RE: ALICE From: Dale Rose I see your query is about to drop off the bottom of the daily list, so here is a thought, just to keep it rolling. How about Sweetly She Sleeps, My Alice Fair, done by Irish tenor, John McCormack many years ago? That is a Stephen Foster song, though. |
06 Apr 98 - 04:29 PM (#25284) Subject: RE: ALICE From: Alice romin@csionline.net, maybe you should start a thread with a different title (Lyr.Request 'Alice') in case people think you are only trying to get my attention.;-) alice in montana |
06 Apr 98 - 06:49 PM (#25294) Subject: RE: ALICE From: Dale Rose That's what I thought she meant at first, but then, maybe she would have said, "HEY, A L I C E!", if she had wanted you. |
06 Apr 98 - 06:55 PM (#25296) Subject: RE: ALICE From: Dale Rose Oops, shouldn't have said "her", just noticed that the writer does not specify gender, guess the Alice bit confused me. |
06 Apr 98 - 06:59 PM (#25298) Subject: RE: ALICE From: What's 'Alice' in Gaelic? I don't think I've ever heard of an Irish Alice. |
06 Apr 98 - 08:42 PM (#25315) Subject: RE: ALICE From: Alice I don't know of a Gaelic equivalent, but it has been a name in my family (Flynn) handed down through the generations in County Leitrim. It sounds rather British to me, but the earliest record I have is my great/great grandmother Alice Cullen married to Lawrence Flynn in the early 1800's. It was a favorite girl's name, and they were farmers and weavers, so, who knows? alice in montana |
23 May 98 - 12:49 AM (#29044) Subject: RE: ALICE From: Alice This is an old thread, but maybe someone can answer the question. I just looked up my name in an internet dictionary, and lo and behold the origin is "Celtic/Teutonic,"... any Gaelic speakers able to enlighten us? alice |
23 May 98 - 07:57 AM (#29052) Subject: RE: ALICE From: Harald I only know of Breton forms of Alice, spelled Aziliz or Alis. Problem is, most names were adopted from/to nearly every language, just with "adjusted" spelling. Which of the Sean/John/Johann/Jaouen/Jean is the original one ? |
23 May 98 - 09:29 AM (#29055) Subject: RE: ALICE From: Back to 'romin's' original question.... Looking for the lyrics to an Irish folk song named 'Alice'. |
28 May 98 - 07:47 PM (#29576) Subject: RE: ALICE From: Joe Offer Could this be the song you're looking for? Here's page two. Whether or not this is the right song, it's certainly a fantastic resource - thousands of pieces of sheet music, all in almost-legible jpg's. -Joe Offer, squinting- |

28 May 98 - 10:06 PM (#29594) Subject: RE: ALICE From: Alice Yes, Joe, and if you save it in Photoshop and enlarge the image, you can ALMOST read the French lyrics, and most of the English ones. I don't think its the song "romin" is looking for, but you certainly found an interesting website. (You're having WAAY too much fun, today, Joe ;-) |

04 Jun 98 - 11:31 AM (#30043) Subject: RE: ALICE From: Jon W. Don't forget there are a few Johns mentioned in the New Testament so there must be an even old equivalent name in Aramaic or even Hebrew. I don't know how it's related, if at all, to my name Jonathan, which is originally ancient Hebrew. Jon W. |
