BS: Quiz - People and Songs/Tunes

15 Apr 02 - 06:22 AM (#690294)
Subject: Quiz - People and Songs/Tunes
From: IanC

Here's a quiz with sort of cryptic clues. In each case, the answer is a person and a related song or tune. Some of them are easy and some less straightforward. For those that aren't quickly answered, you might want to collaborate in the thread.

Also, any further information about the people, songs, tunes etc. will make things more interesting.

I'll drop in now and again to help (if needed) and to summarise the state of play.

HERE IT IS ...

1. Bill's chronometric stone disk helped UK folk music to get its glad rags on.

2. Tom's dad played this tune, and it was under a greenwood tree ... though it's old, it's a military pleasure.

3. A honeyed conundrum from Ralph.

4. Paddy's just a name that Doctor R. used, when he was adulterating the brew for the proletariat.

5. Hibernia blooms for Roy ... but never since 1314.

6. Robert thought that turning on the light would be useless ... He won't think again.

7. Mr. Kipling might make beautiful cakes, but only Peter could bring Danny back to life for him.

8. Hugh and Mona involved in a great tragedy. She got sunk and never came back.

9. Waiting for a train could be quite a hazard for Jean. She could be there for some time.

10. Sir Hugh is sailing back to the island of malts.

Good Luck!
Ian

No

stick them in here, it's sometimes more fun seeing people work them all out. If you know all of them, you can feed them in on demand if you like.

Cheers!
Ian

No ... but you don't have to assume old Bill was English (or that old).

I have this feeling that number 1 is "Rock Around the Clock" (Bill Hailey and the Comets).

Walrus

4: i withdraw my Trumpet hornpipe question, I meant to write Howe's Hornpipe and I got confused etween two famous tunes.. I think Paddy Ryan wrote the "Man who waters the workers beer", and I think his real surname was Fisher, so I guess he was Dr R.... Fisher??

Coming on!

1. is Bill Hailey's "Rock Around The Clock". Here's a good history of the song at The Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

2. is Thomas Hardy, as Harry says, but what about the tune?

Any idea about 3. yet?

Re q10: I'm very fond of islands and whisky, butI dont think ive ever tried one from Mingulay. Can you supply a name? Actually, i have serious doubts: I dont recall any people onMingulay, let alone a distillery but ive not explored.

3. "Sweet Mystery" Ralph McTell (sorry, i missed the previous posts).

4. "The Very Fat Man Who Waters the Worker's Beer" - Paddy Ryan (in fact a professional gentleman, Dr. R. E. W. Fisher, using an alias to conceal his leftist leanings)

5. Flower of Scotland (Written by Roy Williamson of "The Corries") Although "Flower of Scotland" is not a traditional song, it has been adopted as Scotland's de facto national anthem, along with "Scotland the Brave". The lyrics commemorate the defeat of Edward II at Bannockburn in 1314. (thanks Harry)

6. 6. "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" - Bob Dylan. 'nuff said.

7. "Danny Deever" - Rudyard Kipling / Peter Bellamy. (thanks again, Harry)

8. (Harry again) "Ellen Vanin" - Hughie Jones.

9. The L & N Don't Stop Here Anymore - Jean Ritchie. (thanks Jeri)

I don't think there's much malt on Mingulay, though. Anyone get a little closer for No. 10?

Cheers!
Ian

Thanks

Got the materials for the next one (more like my traditional ones) on a piece of paper somewhere in my bedroom. Last week, I put it somewhere safe and now I can't find it. When I do, I'll stick it in.

Cheers!
