(I'll leave it to you to figure out which.) Sandy, I'm far from an expert, but I wonder if you might have a corrupted cookie (now there's a concept...) which keeps throwing Max's server off the track. You might want to go through your cookie file (in the Windows folder) and delete any ones that say "Mudcat" or any others that you aren't absolutely sure you need, then go back and log in again. Just a thought. By the way, I'd be interested in an authoritative explanation of how the word "cookie" came to be used for this kind of file. Aloha, Mark |

From: Sorcha I had to learn the hard way that deleting all Cookies (in the Windows file) does NOT delete all the Temporary Internet files (also in Windows). Usually, deleting all the Temp. files clears all the cookies, but not always. Also, that tab on Tools called Delete Files? It doesn't delete them all either. I now check all three places to make sure everything is empty. Just today, doing one search, I racked up almost 3,000 Temp. files. I clear everything every day. |

Keeping your Temporary Internet files emptied out will also help your machine run faster. Combine that with defragmenting your hard drive frequently, and getting rid of startup programs you don't need, and you may be surprised at the extra pep you get. All of which doesn't solve Bigchuck's problem, though...I guess we'll find out soon enough what does, or did. (And yes, the button on the Tools->Internet Preferences screen will delete everything BUT cookies! Those guys in Redmond are sneaky.) Aloha, Mark |

On IE 5.5, assuming you have not got Mudcat in a special zone such as "Trusted Sites", the security for the "Internet zone" needs to be set at medium or lower to allow cookies. (unless you are using a "custom" setting for that zone). Jon |

From: Jon Freeman Sandy, I don't know if you have tried this one but one approach is to make Muacat and other sites that you wish to use cookies on trusted sites and set a security level of medium (or custom) for that zone and set the Internet zone to high. I believe an entry of *.mudcat.org will cover all of the Mudcat servers/mirrors. Jon |

IE, I think from 6 onwards, has a page in the precerences that attempts to control cookies by allowing you to set options such as blocking 3rd party cookies. I am on a Java version of Netscape 4.78 at the moment. This one has the option "Only accept cookies originating from the same page as being viewed" - same sort of thing - it should prevent the banner adds on a page placing thier cookies. Jon |
