Every association/organization/sociological group has its own demons and scapegoats. Shatner is ours and a damn good thing it is too. Deserving and he earned the hard way--with bad acting. I have probably seen most origina l Star trek episodes andhecertainly can milk the pregnant pause.

How about Leonard Nimoy, LH?

I have to admit, the Shatner thing here has become like one of those "WASSUP!" commercial phrases that passes for a witty comment at the office, an in-joke deal that unites us all in a common obscurity. And its all because of Little Hawk. The Shatner phenomenon has almost reached a level only previously seen in Spaw's "possum" comments, and the "tiple" and "Neil Young Center" ongoing jokes. It should have shown little staying power, but due to Little Hawks constant Shatner Threads, we seem to be stuck with Shatner as a legitimate Mudcat Icon. Thanks, Little Hawk, and may you do a penance at a Star Trek Convention for your unrelenting propagandizing!

I agree Leej!! I'm proud of the lad! He saw it, went after it, and he got it!!! Now we are all plagued with Shatner as well as Tiples, Cleigh, and the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed. It takes dedication to pull of this icon business and the Hawk has shown he knows his stuff........and to do it with Shatner!!!!! Hellfire, Neil was like fish in a barel compared to Shatner. Shatner's a dork of course, but a lot of folks actually thought there was a NYCFTTS!

Congrats Hawk!!! I'm sure Bill will give you a doff of his rug.

Yes, I am very, very proud...

It may stand as my life's most enduring achievement (now there's a scary thought!).

But remember, I could not have done it without the Mudcat. Buncha weirdos in this place... :-)

LEJ - LOL! Yeah, I think Nimoy got just sick to death of Shatner over the years. So did certain other members of the cast, rumour has it...

Someone told me that the mask used for Friday the 13th (or was it Halloween? I get those 2 movies mixed. It's the one with the guy in the mask that isn't a goalie mask) was actually a very beaten up William Shatner mask. I don't know if that's true or not, but I'm not going to rent the movie to find out.

(The nose flute) used to be played during funeral ceremonies to converse with the dead. In some regions it was also used between lovers, as it's soft beautiful tone carried surprisingly well through the night air. The nose flute has almost totally disappeared in the region, with only a few surviving players in the Baram River system of Eastern Sarawak...

Until this moment, McG, I didn't know there really was such a thing. It occurs to me that a recorder and a nose flute in tandem could create haunting melodies, using the circular breathing they teach for didgeridoo. (I can just hear a jig.) Perhaps the equivalent of a 'page turner' could stand by in performance and support one or both of the instruments.

That reminds me, I have to get a recording of the San Francisco Kazoo Orchestra doing "Fire and Rain". Their version of the theme to "2001 - A Space Odyssey" is one of the most memorable things I have ever heard...definitely NOT bland! I'm sure they could spice up James Taylor considerably.

That's good Ebbie! As you know, one of the mantras of the NYCFTTS comes straight from Neil himself (after gazing off absentedly into space which is his wont), "If it feels good, there goes the flying aardvark." We of course had to modify that a bit to "If it feels good, do it" so that it made any sense at all..........

An aspect of Shatner's work often overlooked is his star turn in the series T J Hooker, in which he played a hard-boiled police detective. My favorite episode...well, it was the only one I saw...was a very special one, in which Shatner befriended a young delinquent orphan. The kid was street smart and cynical, and all T J Hooker's efforts taking him to baseball games, going bowling, etc could not convince the kid that it was cool to be straight. Finally, T J said "if you're not busy, I've got a couple of tickets to ...A BEACHBOYS CONCERT!!" then adding "they're old friends of mine." For some reason the kid thinks this is wonderful, and they go to the show. Right after the Beach Boys finish Help Me Rhonda, Mike Love says "we'd like to just take a minute to say hi to a good friend of ours in the audience. TJ, are you out there?" Shatner stands up as the boy gawks at him in wide-eyed idolatry. Then Love says "we use to call him 'The Big Kahoona'." Shatner just stands there grinning and giving Mike Love the "ain no big ting bruddah" sign.

Because this thread owes its ONLY credibility to its LONGevity on the site, it propose the MANATEY as the ICON.

1. Its habitat IS also the water.
2. It is grotesque and repulsive in personal contact and in picture.
3. It serves little "VITAL" interest to the continuation of humanity.
4. It IS amusing.

Considering that the "metaphorical comparison" between SHAT and MANATEY is ZERO...

1. Shat is NOT amusing
2. Shat hasn't even contributed to a WORTHY cause and has contributed even less humanity.
3. He has deffinate 100% on being reupulsive
4. He shares nothing else with MudCatter - not even water.

ONLY IN FLORIDA can one win a poll of this nature....THEN AGAIN...until this moment another candidate was not advanced for competition.

(Little Hawk - why DID you begin this shit?)

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

18 Jun 02 - 12:04 PM (#732247)
Subject: RE: BS: Tired of Shatner
From: Little Hawk

Friggin' Christ! Even I am getting tired of Shatner at this point...

So why did I post here and thus renew the thread? Well, I just couldn't resist some sort of response, at least to Gargoyle, who was kind enough to post some pretty amusing comparisons between Shatner and the common manatee.

Gargoyle, you asked "Little Hawk - why DID you begin this shit?" Well, I ask myself that sometimes...in the wee hours of the night...

I thought it would be funny. I didn't realize that it would mutate and spread quite so insidiously as it has...but the anonymous GUESTS were not much on my mind at that time.

Also, Spaw is to blame. He was doing all that ridiculous stuff with the NYCFFTF (sorry, I mean NYCFTTS!), and Paw and Cletus and all that...and they aren't even REAL! I thought, geez, if he can do all this silly crap and get away with it, why shouldn't I?

So I was really just imitating Spaw, and trying to get some Canadian content in while raising a few harmless laughs.

I find Shatner's acting style quite amusing (to say nothing of his "singing"). He also used to do some Loblaws ads up here in Canada that were damned funny, although not intentionally so, and further to that a close friend of mine once sold him an ounce of grass. God's truth.

That is my explanation.

Now, like a mad scientist in a cheap Hammer horror film, I am stumbling around in the wreckage of my laboratory, tearing at my hair, and crying out again and again in desperation, "WHAT HAVE I DONE? WHAT HAVE I DONE!!!???"

It's all Spaw's fault! The bugger should be drawn, quartered, castrated, and shot!

Shatner - has anyone else heard any of his 'recordings' - his .... unusual interpretation of Lucy in the sky with diamonds is enough to make a sensitive soul weep, and the less said about Henry the 5th, the better. You can actually buy it, although why anone would perplexes me (especially when leonard Nimooy's glorious 'ballad of Bilbo baggins' is out there.)

Where I come from, we call what he does "Smell the fart acting." You say the line, turn the head slightly taking a long, slow in breath.... smell the imaginery fart.... he does it a lot if you watch closely.

Subject: RE: BS: Tired of Shatner
From: Little Hawk

Yes, Hecate, yes! That is a well known Shatner technique, and we have a 4 credit course on it at the WSSBA. A mere 2 semesters of hard work and dedication should prove sufficient to endow a serious student (or a congenital idiot...) with mastery of this acting method.

You see, a long slow intake of breath revitalizes the brain cells with oxygen...providing increased alertness and vitality for dealing with the next crisis that arises. This is very useful when dealing with dangerous alien lifeforms or scantily clad space nymphets.
