I am looking for the lyrics to the Tune "Ballyhoe" including "Do You Remember the Hawthorn" recorded by the Sean O'Neil Band

Subject: Lyr Add: BALLYHOE (Eilish Boland)
From: Brakn

Written by Eilish Boland

You told me that you would come back some day
To me in Ballyhoe
But never a word since you went away
From me so long ago
Though the hours grew long and lonely
Nights have drifted into years
It's getting late, but still I wait
My eyes grown dim with tears

Chorus
Oh do you remember the hawthorn bush
Where we gathered every spring?
So do you remember the reel we danced
Around the fairy ring?
And do you remember the promise made
Beneath the chestnut tree?
But best of all, my absent one
Do you still remember me?

I wander along by the lakeside now
At sunset's early glow
Just dreaming of all the dreams we dreamt
As sweethearts long ago
Though the whispers come and the whispers go
The message comes over the sea
That a foreign land and a foreign strand
Has stolen you from me

I hear a few things that differ from Mick's transcription. Anybody have a printed source? Approximate date of publication? A MIDI to send me?

Ballyhoe
(Eilish Boland)

You told me that you would come back again
Some day to Ballyhoe
But never a word since you went away
From me so long ago
The hours are long and lonely days
Are drifting into years
It's getting late, but still I wait
My eyes grown dim with tears

Chorus
Oh do you remember the hawthorn bush (?)
We gathered every spring?
And do you remember the reels we danced
Around the fairy ring?
And do you remember a promise made
Beneath the chestnut tree?
But best of all, my absent one
Do you still remember me?
But best of all, my absent one
Do you still remember me?

transcribed by ear from a recording by the Sean O'Neill Band
Some words are hard to understand, espectially if that's really a hawthorn bush they're gathering.

This is on a K-Tel CD called Irish Singalong Favourites. The song is abbreviated because it's part of a medley, so the second verse isn't included.

I see an entry for sheet music, published by Walton's, in the Irish Traditional Music Archive online catalogue, dated 1953. Not clear if this is the original publication date. Composer is given as Emor. Will check next time I'm in Dublin. Pity we didn't take up Diarmuid's offer, back when!

Regards

If they were gathering hawthorn and bringing it indoors, no wonder he's gone. Very unlucky!

The name attached to the song, and others of her's on the message board, is inaccurate. The name was Eilís not Eilish. The spelling differs although the pronunciation is the same. Interesting that the accent also makes a difference in searches in the Café.
Eilís Máire Boland (née O'Reilly Farrelly) (1917-1970) was an Irish songwriter. She was born in Kingscourt (Doonaree) in County Cavan. Her memories of the town and the nearby lake are contained in two of her most popular songs, 'Doonaree' and 'Ballyhoe'.

Perhaps I should rather more accurately express it as there being two alternative spellings in use. It is pretty obvious that the English version of the name was used very frequently.

I remember "Doonaree" as being very popular, back in the day - a staple of the "Waltons Programme" on Irish radio.
