Well we ain't got a barrel of money Maybe we're ragged and funny But we travel along Singin' this song, Side by side. Don't know what's comin' tomorrow Maybe it's ______ and sorrow But we're sharin' the road Carryin' our load Side by side. Through all kinds of weather. What if the sky should fall. Just as long as we're together It doesn't matter at all. When they've all had enough and departed. We'll be the same as we started. ? ? Side by side. |

Words and Music by Harry Woods, 1925
See that sun in the morning, peeking over the hill?
Oh, we ain't got a barrel of money, Maybe we're ragged and funny, But we'll travel along Singing a song, Side by side.
Don't know what's comin' tomorrow,
What if the sky should fall? Just as long as we're together, It doesn't matter at all.
When they've all had their quarrels and parted,
We're all hunting for something, something, we don't know what,

24 Apr 02 - 11:41 PM (#697992) Subject: RE: aint got a barrel of money From: GUEST,Billy Corries parody: We got married last Friday, I thought it was my day, When they were gone, we were alone, Side by side. We got ready for bed, then. I nearly dropped dead when, Her false teeth and hair she laid on the chair, Side by side. Then to my amazement, Her little glass eye so small, Her arms and legs beside them, She laid on the chair by the wall. Now me and my baby have parted, We had only just started. Now I sleep on the chair, 'cos there's more of her there -Side by side. |
24 Aug 09 - 05:21 AM (#2707118) Subject: Lyr Req: Side by Side, ain't got a barrel of money From: open mike this is different from the side by side in the D.T. I think it might be from a musical We ain't got a barrel of money, might be ragged and funny, we'll travel along, singing a song, side by side... thru all kinds of weather, what if the sky shouled fall as long as we're together it doesn't matter at all. |

24 Aug 09 - 07:11 AM (#2707187) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Side by Side, ain't got a barrel of money From: GUEST,Mike of Hessle I remember in the 60's/70's in some Folk Club listening to (Jasper Carrot or Mike Harding ?) singing a parody of this song. It was about a wife taking her clothes and parts of her body etc off and putting them on a chair. I can vaguely remember snatches of the song which was very funny. The last line was - "So I slept on the chair there was more of her there - side by side." Sorry I can't help further |

24 Aug 09 - 08:03 AM (#2707207) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: ain't got a barrel of money/Side By Side From: GUEST,Mike of Hessle Many thanks for this. Brought back memories of a very funny night at the Folk Club. Not so funny now I'm laid awake half the night waiting for her to take her false teeth out, take her make-up off, put her night-face on - it can take hours and is it worth it ??? |
24 Aug 09 - 05:00 PM (#2707580) Subject: Lyrics: Side by Side (ain't got a barrel of money) From: Genie Love the Corries' parody, Billy! LOL I didn't know the verses to this song (I sing the main part of the song all the time at retirement homes). I hope I can find a YouTube or something like that with the whole song, not just the "We ain't got a barrel ... side by side" part. Genie |

25 Aug 09 - 11:46 AM (#2708198) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: ain't got a barrel of money/Side By Side From: Mr Happy I noticed on re-listening to the Nick Lucas link I posted, that there's some extra verses: Every time that I쳌fm starting to travel And when I쳌fm hitting the gravel There쳌fs one pal with me Always with me Side by side Well it isn쳌ft a gal or a feller But I쳌fm all ready to tell yer That things are ok As long as we stray Side by side Other pals may shake me When my money쳌fs all gone But this pal will make me Keep carrying on And when I see trouble a-coming On my guitar I start strumming And that쳌fs how we lose All of our blues Side by side |
25 Aug 09 - 03:48 PM (#2708371) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: ain't got a barrel of money/Side By S From: Genie I wonder if Nick Lucas made up the "guitar" lyrics for his own performances. Are they part of the original sheet music? In any case, I'm delighted to hear Lucas's additional lyrics and I'll probably start using them when I play this song. Thanks for the link, Mr. Happy. I'd still love to hear someone sing the VERSES (that Harry Woods originally wrote that go between the choruses). (I'm not sure what the accepted terminology is, but the part that most of us know seems to consist of 2 verses, a bridge, and another verse. But there are two other verses, with a different melodic/lryric pattern: one as an intro verse ("See that sun in the morning ... ") and another intermediary one ("We're all hunting for something, something, we don't know what ... ") .) Maybe I can find Jim Kweskin's recording. |
