It would help if you gave a little more information. Diamond brings up about a gazillion hits.......all of Neil Diamonds stuff, all the DeBeers stuff.....etc.

"Oh the Diamond is a Ship me lads, for the Davis straights she's bound. And the quay it is all garnished with bonny Lassies round."

That Diamond?

Of course, that Diamond! But maybe "straits" but I've always wondered how those "bonny lassies round" kept from rolling off the quay.;~)

There's a listing for

The Bonnie Ship, the Diamond

Could this be it?

A minor quibble: the Diamond is a sea song, a forebitter, a fo'c's'le song, but not a SHANTY, which is a song to which people work, particularly on board ship.

That's the poet's job, innit? "To purify the dialect of the tribe".

Click Here for the chords in Am.

You could either transpose or capo at 5 for Dm

thanks Jim!"The Diamond" works better for me in Am, however your lyrics are diff to mine, as often happens. Any ideas on the origin of the word "forebitters" as the name of the tyype of song.

Th usual explanation was that the "forebitts", an H-shaped iron or wooden fixture for attaching a hawser or other heavy cable to, located on the foredeck of a sailing vessel, was a convenient place to sit, a throne if you will, for a sailor to relax off-watch while telling yarns or singing songs, or catching up on his/her e-mail...

The version Jim Dixon gave is a new one to me. Also the chords seem to be a little different to the ones I would use. Here is my attempt at the version I know in Dm.

      Dm C
The Diamond is a ship me lads,
Dm C
For the Davis Straits she's bound
Dm C
And the Quay it is all garnished
Dm Am Dm
With bonnie lassies round

...

Chorus
Dm C Dm
And it's cheer up, me lads
C Dm
Let your hearts never fail,
C Dm
For the bonnie ship The Diamond
Am Dm
Goes a-fishing for the whale!

I used to do this one with one of my bands. We did it in Bm with these chords (I've transposed them to Dm):

Dm C The Diamond is a ship me lads, Dm C For the Davis Straits she's bound Dm C And the Quay it is all garnished Am C Dm With bonnie lassies round Dm C Dm And it's cheer up, me lads Dm C Dm Let your hearts never fail, Dm C Dm For the bonnie ship The Diamond Am C Dm Goes a-fishing for the whale!

Here's the way I sing it, nice easy chords:

   Am          G
The Diamond is a ship me lads,
       Am                  G
For the Davis Straits she's bound
       Am             G
And the Quay it is all garnished
    D      G       Am
With bonnie lassies round.

...
Chorus:
Am            G      Am
And it's cheer up, me lads
               G    Am
Let your hearts never fail,
                      G
For the bonnie ship The Diamond
      D       G       Am
Goes a-fishing for the whale!

PS - "garnished" is pronounced with three syllables: gar-nish-ed.

I used to do it something like this. It doesn't sound like it'd work, but try it.

    Dm -         Am
The Diamond is a ship me boys,

       Dm                      Am
For the Davis trait she's bond

         Dm            C       Am
And the quay it is all garnisheed

      F   Am    Dm
With 40 lasses round.

It's very much a favourite at 'Hounds' gigs, you can hear our rocked up version here, and chords we use below.

And for some reason beyond my ken, our recording of it is the most popular song on the Rochester Sweeps Festival Myspace page, where it has attracted at least three times more plays than any other featured artist, even the mighty Bellowhead!

http://www.myspace.com/sweepsfestival

Am                        G                               Am                      G
The Diamond is a ship, my lads, for the Davis Strait she's bound
       Am             G                     Am       Em      Am
The quay it is all garnished with bonnie lasses 'round
                                              G            Am                G
Captain Thompson gives the order, to sail the ocean wide
                  Am             G                           Am          Em       Am
Where the sun it never sets, my lads, nor darkness fills the sky

Chorus
Am    G       Am                Am      G       Am
And it's cheer up my lads, let your hearts never fail
                           G          Am                      Em                Am
While the bonny ship the Diamond goes a-fishing for the whale
