Help: Pete Kleinow / 'What a Friend We Have..'

Back when I was in college, I had a record album by an artist whose name I have forgotten. Here is what I remember: the singer was male, but sang in a falsetto. On the cover, he was wearing a flat-brimmed round black hat. One song on the album (I think the last one) was "What a Friend We Have in Jesus"; and Pete Kleionw played pdeal steel throughout the album, doing a virtuoso solo in "What a Friend We Have in Jesus".

The album came out around 1969, give or take a year.

Does anyone recall who this artist was?

Thanks!!

Chuck

Could it have been Gram Parsons with the Flying Burritto Brothers.

It's definitely not on any of the original Flying Burrito Bros. (of which Sneaky Pete was a founding member) records. Will have to do some research on whom else Pete may have recorded with.

Isn't it THIS ONE? If not, there's a discography HERE.

Whoever he is, he got Cooder, Ethridge and Kleinow to play on his album. Sounds like its worth a listen.

John Braden has a high tenor voice, kind of wavery, and I've never seen another album by him. I picked it up thirty years ago because Ry Cooder was on it. The picture on the cover gives John B. a kind of "Amish" look, and maybe it really was the only music he ever made on record. Anyway, it's got lots of good stuff, and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" is long, with great extended breaks from both Sneeky Pete and Ry!!

My thanks to all for the help, and my apologies for being so dull as not to have realized that my message actually got posted, and answered. (Especially to Sakurai-san, who kindly pointed me back to this message thread.)

Now: does anyone have any idea how I can get my hands on a copy of this album? Also, does anyone know what became of John Braden? He seems to have disappeared after this album's release.

By the way, on Pete Kleinow's website, he spells the singer's name "Braddon"...

Sincerely,

Chuck Meyrick

Continuing the hunt: I have found a used record on the Internet called "Marmaduke Songs and Stories" by John Braden. It is listed as a children's record. Could this be the same John Braden?

If you just want to listen to it, I could go dig it out of the "closet-full 'o' vinyl" and put it on a cassette for you. No sweat, glad to do it, if that works for you (wouldn't have a jacket photo, notes, etc.). Just post a note and an address in my "personal mail".

Steve-o,

Thanks for the very kind offer. I've left a note in your personal mail. I think. I've not used that function of Mudcat before.

I have also finally managed to get my mitts on a copy of the record (a "white label" copy) and am going to pester my daughters' friends until I can find someone who can transfer it to CD for me.

Does anyone know what became of John Braden?
