Hi Alan. Rod gave me the lyrics and music to this several years ago. It's just a case of me looking for and (hopefully) finding, the bit of paper it's on! Someone will quite likely come back with it before I do, but if not, and if I can find it, I'll send it in the next couple of days.

SAIL AWAY(Rod Shearman)Oh your shore leave is over so at home you can't remain,Sail away, sail away, sail away.You've spent all your pay so it's back to plough the main.To see the tropic sunset with its colours pain the sky;To hear the roaring billows and the lonely seagull's cry.Your gear is all packed and you've said your last goodbye,You head for the docks and you stifle back a sighBlue Peter's at the mast and the tugs are standing by,You leave the land behind and the ocean road you ply.You leave the land behind heading for the Southern Cross;You take it in your stride where the calm seas are tossed.The Aussie coast is here and we've money in the ship,All ashore for a pint so we give the boss the slip.We coast for sunny shores, it's for Sydney we are boundWe'll drink the pubs all dry if each man buys his round.We've a cargo of wool, so farewell antipodes,And its homeward we ply by way of tropic seas.So it's homeward we're bound and the days they fairly fly;And when we get back home I will kiss this tub goodbye.Now me pay-off's in me bin and I'm heading for the train,But when your money's gone, I suppose it's back again.From Rod's sleeve notes on 'Here's to Friends': 'Based on my own experience in the Merchant Navy. In the 1950's I did a number of trips to Australia in ships of the Peninsula and Orient Steam Navigation Comp., and the Orient Line. These were big ships, 'floating hotels', the main cargo being passengers. On the return voyage we carried wool or refrigerated goods. This was written in 1968. My old friends Jim Mageean and Johnny Collins did much to popularise this one."Hope this helps!

SAIL AWAY
(Rod Shearman)

Oh your shore leave is over so at home you can't remain,
Sail away, sail away, sail away.
You've spent all your pay so it's back to plough the main.

To see the tropic sunset with its colours paint the sky;
To hear the roaring billows and the lonely seagull's cry
.

Your gear is all packed and you've said your last goodbye,
You head for the docks and you stifle back a sigh

Blue Peter's at the mast and the tugs are standing by,
You leave the land behind and the ocean road you ply.

You leave the land behind heading for the Southern Cross;
You take it in your stride where the calm seas are tossed.

The Aussie coast is here and we've money in the ship,
All ashore for a pint so we give the boss the slip.

We coast for sunny shores, it's for Sydney we are bound
We'll drink the pubs all dry if each man buys his round.

We've a cargo of wool, so farewell antipodes,
And its homeward we ply by way of tropic seas.

So it's homeward we're bound and the days they fairly fly;
And when we get back home I will kiss this tub goodbye.

Now me pay-off's in me bin and I'm heading for the train,
But when your money's gone, I suppose it's back again.

From Rod's sleeve notes on 'Here's to Friends': 'Based on my own experience in the Merchant Navy. Thanks Gervase. Will I see you at Chippenham? (This year I'm giving it its last chance as a pub singing festival! It was pretty terrible last year when the singing pubs weren't available for various reasons.) All the best.

Clouds are upon a summer sky ...

My please!
I'll be there (if the tickets turn up - currently they seem to be lost in some Wiltshire space-time continuum).
I only made one day last year, but Tony O'Neill's lunchtime session seemed pretty good (even if the Wilson's dislodged five years' worth of ear-wax!). This year I'm going for the full jubilee Monty (So nice of Her Maj to make my birthday a national holiday, I thought!)<=br>= See you there.

Well, if Tony's sessions get too full, my singarounds this year will be just around the corner at the new Causeway venue.... Fox & Ferret bar, but non-smoking...

Kitty

PS Rod took Enya to court over her version of "Sail away" - Jim Mageean was a witness..... Rod failed to prove that Enya's version was a breach of copyright.

The name Tony O'Neill strikes a bell.

Was he the guy who ran the mighty singarounds in the village pub at The Towersey Folk Festival? (I can't remember the name of the pub?) It was quite a few years ago since I was there.

The village hall was just around the corner, and that was Festival venue . I had put my name down to give a song there, it didn't seem likely that I was going to get a chance to, so I went to the pub. I learned afterwards that my name was called out in the village hall. Unfortunately The MC recognised me later and he wasn't too happy. But on that occasion, I think I made the better choice. I think that informal singarounds serve as a vital ingredient to any festival.

As for the late Rod Shearman, there are three of his songs in my repertoire. "The Big Fella", "Sail Away", and "Say Do You Remember When?" The last two he wrote out for me and sent a self-recorded cassette tape containing the songs.

Dave.

Tony O'Neill ran and still runs the singarounds in the barn at Towersey, and some of Rod's ashes were scattered there last festival.

The rest of Rod's ashes went down the London River, a week or two later.

Thanks for the update on Tony O'Neill.

Back to Rod. Yes he told me at the time about his intention to sue for copyright on "Sail Away".

Rod was at the Towersey Singaround when I was there.

A smashing person to know and a talented song writer.

Of course if you buy the CD you get Dave, Anni and Johnny singing the harmonies on Sail Away(and Mick's whizzo guitar accompaniments on 5 other tracks).

Or you could wait for the book.......
