Lyr Add: Maloney Wants a Drink (Behan)

Subject: Lyr Add: MALONEY WANTS A DRINK (Behan)
From: Mrrzy

Just rediscovered this gem...

MALONEY WANTS A DRINK
The Dubliners, on Irish Drinking Songs (which is an anthology)

When Eve was in the garden, Adam climbed an apple tree.
He went aloft up to the top to see what he could see.
He gazed in awe, for what he saw fair made the poor man grieve.
Ah, Patrick John Maloney stood there, whispering to Eve!

CHORUS: So kiss me, love, and miss me, love, and dry your bitter tears.
My loving you'll remember now for many, many years.
Be happy, love; be satisfied I left you in the pink.
There's many a man may want a bride; Maloney wants a drink.

Salome danced for Paddy, taking off her 7 veils.
"Salome," said Maloney, "That's a trick that never fails."
Maloney put Salome's only clothing in a sack.
"I'll run along down to the pawn and bring your bundle back!" CHORUS

From London to Nebraska and from Glasgow to Hong Kong,
From Cardiff to Alaska and from Peking to Saigon,
Wherever the girls are lonely, I'm sure that in his role,
Ah, it's there you'll find Maloney, a-waiting to console! CHORUS

It's sung slowly except for the last line of each verse and the chorus. Lovely thing... needs more verses, though! Challenge, anyone?

here's one off the top of me head -

A lady rode through Coventry and all had shut there eyes,
except of course our Peeping Tom who though he might get wise.
'What's that?' cried Tom as he went blind, 'atop that snow white mare?'
Twas just your man Maloney, underneath Godiva's hair.

Chorus

I could write 100 more, I think, how's it sound?

OOH, I like that one!

When Moses sent the plagues out to fester Pharoah's kin,
our Patrick John Maloney had no boils upon his skin;
What's that, now are you Jewish, our poor old Moses sighed,
Oh no said old Maloney, not on my mother's side!

Victoria Regina being widowed was depressed.
Until one day, in early May she entertained a guest.
A smile, a laugh, then giggles, when in rushes Mr. Brown,
'Now all me plans are gang agly, Maloney's back in town!'

I am somehow reminded of Alabama 1968, which is not exactly happy - but we seem to be hitting all the same milestones!

Napoleon at Waterloo was fighting for his life
The English weren't happy, and neither was his wife
Before he went to exile, he checked in the canteen
and there he found Maloney with his darling Josephine!

Priscilla had three sisters who were sweet & well disposed,
Miles Standish now decided it was time he had proposed.
'Speak for yourself, but get in line, John Alden's at the door,
Priscilla told her suitor, '& Maloney's spoken for!' (pokin' four!)

Miles Standish now decided it was time he strongly courted.
'Speak for yourself, but get in line, John Alden's in the door,'
Priscilla told her suitor, '& soon Maloney's spoken for!' (pokin' four!)

Prince Charles thought that he'd found the one, a consort that was pleasant. Camilla Parker Bowles was fun, and certainly no peasant, A member of that horsey blood, at ease, on foot or mounted. But she, when asked her favorite stud, said 'Is Maloney counted?'

had to try one more, c'mon, nobody else? Hey Mirzy, can't you come out today?

Pierre was quite a catch of course, and also was Marie
Pierre thought he'd found radioactivity aglow
But no it was Maloney and Marie in afterglow!

We need more of these Kirk... many more!

In a search for gold in '49, some miners rode along
Although they weren't lost, not quite, they sang a lonesome song
Where are we? Cried the riders, Are we near that long-lost mine? Well, old Patrick John Maloney found Clementine just fine!

I'm thinking of other famous women... Calamity Jane? Amelia Earhart? That Paddy gets around!

Yes indeed. But I can't post it, I can only sing it.

The waters of the ocean are green and glassy deep
And who knows just how many underneath the waters sleep
But one Amelia Earhart went a-missing long ago
Where has she been now ever since, Maloney, he would know!

You can read all through the Bible, and find all the "begats"
With many men and women having lots of Bible brats
But look for any woman's name, and somewhere it is true
That next you'll read that somehow, our Maloney knew her too!

the song as performed by the Dubliners, and on the compilation Mrrzy starts this thread with was written by Dominic Behan, by the way, I started another thread of a song challenge, because no-one was contributing to this one, then Mrrzy returned from Boston, so I think I'll move the one other contribution back over here. Or maybe Joe can merge the threads?

they were brothers, of course, Dominic was also a playwright, and prolific songwriter, best known for 'The Patriot Game' I would think. THere must be a thread in here somewhere about Dominic's songs, and Brendan's singing?

All on the Ould Sod, Ireland, Behan brothers wrote and sang
Made music, plays and fiddle tunes, and neither also-ran
One evening in the garden, I saw them and I quoth
"There's Patrick John Maloney and he's buggering them both!"

Hey, nobody can accuse me of being heteroist!

Not sure whether I like this or not: either the verse as a whole or any part of it. But when speaking of famous women, the Farmer's Daughter certainly deserves mention. Our man is bound to have met her once or twice.

And I've written three final couplets, none of which *really* work. But better to get SOMEthing out than nothing at all and take all the crap for not having it.

The Farmer's Daughter's father chased him through the night and mud.
The Spanish don, the French marquis pant for Maloney's blood.
But like the marryin' parson and the Justice of the P(1)
Our hero's never, ever caught; Maloney got away.(2)

But like the scheming maiden and the parson with his book,
Our hero's never, ever caught; Maloney did a hook.(3)

But like the marrying preacher and the cardinal in red,
Our hero's never yet been caught. Better dead than wed.

(1) For those of our non-US readers, the Justice of the Peace is a local magistrate. Among his other duties, he or she is responsible for civil marriages in his or her jurisdiction, especially in small towns.
(2) Pronounce "P" and "away" halfway between "tee" and "pay" to make the rhyme work.
(3) The slang term I've always heard is "to hook off" or "to hook it off" (to escape). I don't know whether "to make a hook" or "to do a hook" are reasonable slang or not.

Now, come on, somebody's got to have a tune for this and can get it on the list. Mrrzy, can you communicate it in sound to someone who can put it in ABC? There's GOTTA be a way!!!

BB,
NightWing

Glad someone belatedly credited Dominic Behan. In my view seasoned mudcatters should not go publishing copyright material without acknowledgement.

Let's not forget that Dominic and Brendan were brothers of Brian, who is still alive I hope.

no one here has forgotten Brian, nor Séamus, nor sister Carmel nor mother Kathleen Kearney Behan, who recorded folk songs toward the end of her life, the question asked by someone was re: Brendan, and prompted the response. I agree totally, that credit should be given whenever it is due, (by those seasoned or not!) which is why I added that info, when it occurred to me that not everyone reading this thread would be familiar with the source of the song. I take it Mrrzy had it from the Dubliners' cd, which he did properly credit as his source. The credit for the song itself is not always the first thing one reads, especially when it may be lost in the fine print somewhere as D. Behan or something, or just Behan sometimes.

THis is beginning to sound like the Tinker song - if Maloney's going to make it through the whole Behan family, he'd better get up early!

I'll keep thinking. And about how to get you the tune, NightWing... I'll keep thinking about that too, but you might have to hie thee to a music store where they let you listen.

Well, nothing with your man and the Three Fates yet, but I did come up with another famous, though fictional woman Mr. Maloney was bound to have met: Eskimo Nell!

An Eskimo named Nell met your John Patrick in the snow.
He gave her twenty dollars and he gave her quite a go.
Said Nell, "I thought you southern men just didn't have the knack,
But if you do that one more time, I'll give your money back."

In addition, I spoke with Mrrzy an hour or so ago. My cell phone lost the signal before we were quite done, but we came up with the tune. This may not be QUITE right, but it's close:

Still not right, sorry. In between the third B and the first A, there's supposed to be a measure of rest with the claps on the 1st and 3rd beats. Maybe this way:

D>E F>G | B>B B>z |
f f/
z/
A | G>F E>D | C3 ||

Will this work? Only Goddess knows.

Roy Keane kicked up a rumpus and got himself sent home.

Although he missed the cup, and was called a silly louse.
He'd realised that Maloney might be chatting up his spouse.

Where is Patrick John Maloney then? We need him on this day!!

could be written:

So, which makes more sense? Also, I think it's DRY, not CRY, your bitter tears, in the chorus.

Pardon me dredging this up. I just encountered this thread while wandering through the dusty corridors of Mudcat.

In the original post, the third verse of 'Maloney Wants a Drink' is rendered thus:

Salome danced for Paddy, taking off her 7 veils.
"Salome," said Maloney, "That's a trick that never fails."
Maloney put Salome's only clothing in a sack.
"I'll run along down to the pawn and bring your bundle back!" CHORUS

I may be mistaken, but I always knew the last line of that verse as:

"I'll run along down to the pawn and bring a bottle back!" CHORUS

Which makes far more sense in context.
