the song as performed by the Dubliners, and on the compilation Mrrzy starts this thread with was written by Dominic Behan, by the way, I started another thread of a song challenge, because no-one was contributing to this one, then Mrrzy returned from Boston, so I think I'll move the one other contribution back over here. Or maybe Joe can merge the threads?

Not sure whether I like this or not: either the verse as a whole or any part of it. But when speaking of famous women, the Farmer's Daughter certainly deserves mention. Our man is bound to have met her once or twice.

And I've written three final couplets, none of which *really* work. But better to get SOMEthing out than nothing at all and take all the crap for not having it.

The Farmer's Daughter's father chased him through the night and mud.
The Spanish don, the French marquis pant for Maloney's blood.
But like the marryin' parson and the Justice of the P(1)
Our hero's never, ever caught; Maloney got away.(2)

But like the scheming maiden and the parson with his book,
Our hero's never, ever caught; Maloney did a hook.(3)

But like the marrying preacher and the cardinal in red,
Our hero's never yet been caught. Better dead than wed.

(1) For those of our non-US readers, the Justice of the Peace is a local magistrate. Among his other duties, he or she is responsible for civil marriages in his or her jurisdiction, especially in small towns.
(2) Pronounce "P" and "away" halfway between "tee" and "pay" to make the rhyme work.
(3) The slang term I've always heard is "to hook off" or "to hook it off" (to escape). I don't know whether "to make a hook" or "to do a hook" are reasonable slang or not.

Now, come on, somebody's got to have a tune for this and can get it on the list. Mrrzy, can you communicate it in sound to someone who can put it in ABC? There's GOTTA be a way!!!

Glad someone belatedly credited Dominic Behan. In my view seasoned mudcatters should not go publishing copyright material without acknowledgement.

Let's not forget that Dominic and Brendan were brothers of Brian, who is still alive I hope.

no one here has forgotten Brian, nor Séamus, nor sister Carmel nor mother Kathleen Kearney Behan, who recorded folk songs toward the end of her life, the question asked by someone was re: Brendan, and prompted the response. I agree totally, that credit should be given whenever it is due, (by those seasoned or not!) which is why I added that info, when it occurred to me that not everyone reading this thread would be familiar with the source of the song. I take it Mrrzy had it from the Dubliners' cd, which he did properly credit as his source. The credit for the song itself is not always the first thing one reads, especially when it may be lost in the fine print somewhere as D. Behan or something, or just Behan sometimes.

Well, nothing with your man and the Three Fates yet, but I did come up with another famous, though fictional woman Mr. Maloney was bound to have met: Eskimo Nell!

In addition, I spoke with Mrrzy an hour or so ago. My cell phone lost the signal before we were quite done, but we came up with the tune. This may not be QUITE right, but it's close:

Hey, I just noticed that this line:

could be written:

So, which makes more sense? Also, I think it's DRY, not CRY, your bitter tears, in the chorus.

Pardon me dredging this up. I just encountered this thread while wandering through the dusty corridors of Mudcat.

In the original post, the third verse of 'Maloney Wants a Drink' is rendered thus:

Salome danced for Paddy, taking off her 7 veils.
"Salome," said Maloney, "That's a trick that never fails."
Maloney put Salome's only clothing in a sack.
"I'll run along down to the pawn and bring your bundle back!" CHORUS

I may be mistaken, but I always knew the last line of that verse as:

"I'll run along down to the pawn and bring a bottle back!" CHORUS

Which makes far more sense in context.
