WHERE ARE YOU TONIGHT I WONDER
By Andy M. Stewart, Arr. Karan Casey/Donald Shaw (MCPS)

Where are you tonight I wonder
Where will you be tonight when I cry
Will sleep for you come easy
Whilst I alone can't slumber
Will you welcome the morning
At another man's side

How easy for you the years have slipped under
And left me with a shadow the sun can't dispel
For I built for you a tower full of love and admiration
But I built it so high I could not reach it myself

The view from my window is a world full of sadness
The face in my mirror is the one face I know
You have taken all that's in me, so my heart is in no danger
My heart is in no danger, but I'd still like to know

Where are you tonight I wonder
Where will you be tonight when I cry
Will sleep for you come easy,
Whilst I alone can't slumber
Will you welcome the morning
At another man's side

There is a silence and it cannot be broken
There is a pure heart and it's there I will go
Time will work its healing and my spirit will grow stronger
But in the meantime I would still like to know.

Where are you tonight I wonder
And where will you be tonight when I cry
Will sleep for you come easy
Whilst I alone can't slumber
Will you welcome the morning
At another man's side

Mr. Blackbush,

Try again, it shows it is available as of 19 May. You could also show patience, and wait for the backorder. Or is that too much to ask to support a favorite artist?

BTW, the songbook is dead brilliant, and well worth the investment for any fan of Andy's music.

yes, guest, well worth the investment, I assumed that Blackbush Celtic (a damn fine whisky BTW!) will track one down somewhere, but that he needed to start learning the song NOW, and doesn't want to wait for the backorder. I also am 100% for artists being paid for what they do, but scholarship allows some sharing and copying of printed material.

To state it clearly, I need the song on saturday as a birthday present during a gig on stage in vienna, and I don´t have more than a fading memory in my mind that I heard it at the Gutenbrunn Folk Festival in Austria when Andy M. Stewart sang it live - and that is in fact little to perform the song myself without any support from lovely people all over the world. And, according to Bill - if I sing the song on stage, I`ll pay for it, if I want or not, and if I ever record it, I`ll pay even more. So don´t worry, Andy M. Stewart will be rewarded financially for my request, it´s just a matter of time - and I don´t think, that he would see any kind of problem in asking me for support.

that´s all,

best regards to all

Walter

... perhaps some of You shold take a look at www.blackbush.at to know what I´m talking about.

Dear friends, I do not even worry about strange people. I need the song as a birthday present to perform it on stage next saturday - and I don´t have more than a slight memory that I heard it sung by Andy M. Stewart at the Gutenbrunn Folk Festival in Austria some two years ago - little knowledge to sing it, so I needed immediate support. And thanks again to those who understand this situation and helped me without asking further questions. And when I perform this song live, I`ll pay for it, if I like it or not, and if I ever record it, I`ll pay even more. So anyway Andy M. Stewart will get his financiall "reward" - and I don´t think, he would have any problem with me asking for support or with You helping me. But perhaps some of You should have a look at www.blackbush.at to know what I´m talking about.

That´s all, thanks again to all who helped me and kind regards from th Austrian folk scene,

Yours sincerely,

Walter

not to mention all the people who will hear Walter's performance and then try to find Andy's cds and songbooks, and so it goes...

Good luck, Saturday, Walter and Happy Birthday to someone from me (& Andy)

Glad we are all such happy campers. Actually, Andy is pretty particular about people using his songs and his rights, without his permission. I'm sure you will pay royalties to Andy and complete the information form he asks for here on his website to do it:

http://www.andymstewart.com/licenseinfo.html

Shall I be sure and let him know of your intentions?

Thank You, Bill, for the kind understanding, I´ll send Your birthday greetings to my friend, I´m sure he´ll be surprised!

To the man with no name (do have something to hide?) - In Austria we heave a very restrictive copyright control, but thank You very much for all Your really great advices. It´s good to know that there is someone somewhere who´s only problem seems to be my music - wonderful to have such a fan. Your welcome!

Cheers!

Walter

I think, that´s the last time, dear unknown friend somewhere looking for a name - some advice for your reading skills: the page you mentioned says in the first line: "If you obtain a mechanical license to record an Andy M. Stewart song ..." and so on. As far as I´m concerned my voice is not a mechanical recording. But don´t worry, as soon as you have finished school, you´ll be able to understand written sentences in english. So good luck, keep on rehearsing. And if You meet "the master" himself, my best regards to him and special thanks for all the great songs he has written. If I ever would even think about recording Stewart´s song, I´ll complete the form - far more easy via the net than writing all the letters I sent to Brian McNeill, Dougie McLean, Ralph McTell ................

And then there's the old Country Western song from the early '50's:

Tonight I'm sad, my heart is weary
From wonderin' if I'm wrong or right
To dream about you, though you've left me
I wonder where you are tonight...

The lyrics posted above are a pretty good transcription of the Karan Casey recording, but a bit far from those on the Andy M. Stewart recording. Here's what I hear:

WHERE ARE YOU (TONIGHT I WONDER?)
(Andy M. Stewart)

CHORUS
Where are you tonight I wonder?
And where will you be tonight when I cry?
Will sleep for you come easy, though I alone can't slumber?
Will you welcome in the morning at another man's side?

How easy for you the years slipped under
And left me a shadow the sun can't dispel;
I built for you a tower of love and admiration,
I set you so high I could not reach myself.

I look through my window at a world filled with strangers,
The face in my mirror is the one face I know;
You have taken all that's in me, so my heart is in no danger
My heart is in no danger, but I'd still like to know.

If there is a silence that can't be broken,
If there be a pure heart, to her I will go;
And time will work its healing and the spirit will grow stronger,
But in the meantime I'd still like to know.
