Where are Places from 'Boulavogue'

Subject: Where are Places from Boulavogue
From: AndreasW

Hi there,
one of my favourite irish songs is "Boulavogue"
but I have problems finding the places mentioned in the song on my maps, the following places are in none of the map indexes, can anyone help me to locate them?

in the order they appear in the song:
Boulavogue
Shelmalier
Harrow
Vinegar Hill (also mentioned in "Boys of Wexford")

The other places mentioned I found on my maps, so I suppose that these places are real. Thanks in advance AndreasW

Hi,

Vinegar Hill is east of Enniscorthy, (County Wexford, Ireland.)It overlooks the river Slaney.

According to my map The Harrow is just NE of Enniscorthy.

I assume the other places are in the same area but they're not on my map either.

The tune is Youghal harbour which is just across the map a bit near Cork.

County Wexford is the bottom right hand corner of Ireland.

The placenames are the real thing alright! You just need a fairly large scale map to pick them up.

The great Frank Harte has been touring a talk/recital of songs connected with the 1798 rebellion to great acclaim - as Frank McGrath will confirm. Frank (H!) has a great collection of songs of and about the period. He plans to issue a CD of them soon. There are also one or two other good, similar projects on the stocks (along with some pretty dreadful ones!) I'll post details if anyone's interested.

How's it goin' everyone.
Well Martin, we meet again. I concur with you 100%. Frank Harte is THE MAN regarding 1798 songs and he will have a CD out soon with a re-release or two of some of his older stuff. And yes there are some CRAP 1798 CD's out there right now.

I'll be in Enniscorthy on Sunday next (26th April) and I shall try to pick up some pic's and maps. I'll email D. Greenhouse to see if it is possible to post them on this thread section. Or maybe one of the more knowledgeable Muscat heads can leave message here on how to go about posting GIFs and JPEGs.

Yes, Martin, we're interested in any other worthwhile references you can provide.

By the way, my son broke his leg yesterday evening, and he could do with any encouraging emails you can provide. Here is his page with the story.

Notwithstanding my ancestry I have little knowledge of the 1798 uprising. Is anyone able to provide a potted history please, or direct me to a site that may have it.

Here you are, John.
There is an "official" page due to the bicentennial this year with a brief overview of the happenings 1798. You´ll find it here.
It also contains a photograph of vinegar hill (and lots of stuff they plan for this year).
If you´re really interested in history it may be not the best page, but it´s a start.

Well, now at last I read the text (yesterday I was too tired and had a fast look at the pictures only)- not so bad at all. Lots of stuff they have over the year. Wish I could be there...

harald, thanks for the link to the site--i've been meaning to dig more into the histories of the songs for a while but haven't made it to the library anytime recently (a shame in itself), but ah, thanks for educating my lazy self a bit!! : ) erica

Frank McGraph,

I'm glad to hear Frank is doing so well and still singing. Indeed he is the man. If you see him, tell him I was asking for him.

You know, There was, maybe still is, agreat singer from Wexford, Paddy Berry. He had a great song...let me me see:

You friends of renown, I pray you sit down for I have a short tale for to tell. It's around Wexford Town, where the Slaney flows down to meet with the oncoming swell. Some people of fame, in the horse-racing game, were assembled in groups in the stands While others of note to the booky and tote paid a visit to try out their plans.

The 'cat is back!

I still don't know how to place graphics here but the 1798 web site as indicated by Harald will give a lot of info.. Search the web for "1798" and "Ireland" and you'll find a mass of stuff.

Dave Brennan, are you out there?

Frank Harte sends regards to you and Virginia. He spoke very highly of you both. So say nice things about him as he may be browsing these pages very soon.

Frank McGrath

That's enough about quays............I am still unsure where this is going but I am comforted by the thought that if McGrath can find his way around the system anybody can.

I will now press the button and hope .......

Good man Frank. Did Dave Brennan contact you? There is another Goilín boy lurking around these threads too. You will find the great wolly headed one (A. O'Farachain) has started to contribute also.

O'Farachain has never contributed to anything...not even the St.Vincent De Paul.....

He still has the communion money he got up at the grotto in Inchicore.....

Now Frank that's not quite true. O'Farachain is a very giving person. He gave me a lot of abuse and heartache on more than one occassion.

But I have to agree with you 'bout the communion money .....

Dick

Haven't you heard? When giving talks etc. these days, Frank uses a little dictating recorder - on which he has the first few notes of each song! That keeps him out of trouble.

The CD was launched at the Goleen Singers club last week, at a mighty session. As you'd expect, it has a few surprises in terms of the approach he takes to some songs and a great range of material. regards
