Andy Griffith Show Theme

Okay, I know, it's not "folk music" (yet). I'm looking for the music to the theme whistled at the beginning of the show. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm playing at a cafe that uses the music in their radio spots and would like to learn it right.

I found the music you want in a book of TV themes at a yard sale! It was fascinating to find that there were even words to it! As soon as I saw your post I made a copy of the song the right size to go through my fax machine. If you are able to receive a fax, you will have this within a few minutes of my receiving your reply. I don't know the legal aspects of sending this to you since you will be using it on the air, but I'll do it anyway. Also I don't ask for anything in return. I have a posting on this site also and if I expect someone to do me a favor, I feel I should do the same. Let me know how to get this to you and it's yours. If you don't have fax, give me a mail address. Reply to me at dnewman1@juno.com

Thanks Dean! And actually, I won't be playing it "on the air." My partner & I play mostly oldtime music (mandolin, banjo, autoharp & hammered dulcimer)on Saturday night at the cafe, and we thought it would be fun to add it to our set list since they're already using it for their radio spots.

I got a book at the library this week and the "Bonanza" lyrics were listed. Here they are:

BONANZA
Words and Music by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans
G
We got a right to pick a little fight, bonanza!
D7sus D7
If anyone fights any one of us
Am7/D D7 G
He's got a fight with me!
C
We're not a one to saddle up and run, bonanza!
G7sus G7
Anyone of us who starts a little fuss
Dm7/G G7 C
Knows he can count on me!

G C
One for four, four for one,
G/D A9 D9
This we guarantee!
G
We got a right to pick a little fight, bonanza!
D7sus D7
If anyone fights any one of us,
Am7/D D7 G
He's gotta fight with me.

I remember a line something like "We got ahold of a pot full o' gold, Bonanza!" from that theme. Must be another verse.

Can anyone lead me to guitar tablature for the Andy theme? I've got the basics, but I'd like to learn the very chords the guitarist was playing on the show's soundtrack.

Thanks, Chet W.

The lyrics to the Andy Griffith show theme have been recorded a few times by the Henry Kaiser band, in their rather unique style. In front of me I've got their live disc "Heart's Desire" on Reckless Records, with the theme listed as 'The fishin' hole' by Sloane,Hagen and Spencer. Check it out! -Jes

I never knew there were lyrics until Dean sent me a copy (Thanks, Dean!). What a great list this is!

Anyway, here they are (Lyrics by Everett Sloane).

Well, now, take down your fishin' pole
and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
We may not get a bite all day,
but don't you rush away.
What a great place to rest your bones
and mighty fine for skippin' stones,
You'll feel fresh as a lemonade
a-settin' in the shade.
Whether it's hot, Whether it's cool,
Oh, what a spot for whistlin' like a fool,
What fine day to take a stroll
and wander by the Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way
to pass the time o' day.

We'll have no need to call the roll
when we get to The Fishin' Hole,
There'll be you, me and Old Dog Trey,
to doodle time away,
If we don't hook a perch or bass,
we'll cool our toes in dewy grass,
Or else pull up a weed to chaw,
and maybe set and jaw.
Hangin' around Takin' our ease,
Watchin' that hound a-scratchin' at his fleas.
Come on, take down your fishin' pole
and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way
to pass the time away.
