Personally, I don't think I've ever clicked on a banner advert (except by mistake), I close 'pop up' windows before they've loaded their content - I only use 'pop-up stopper' software if a site is full of them. I have, once or twice, clicked on the Google adverts, but not often. How about you? Ian |

From: GUEST,Marion Another discussion forum that I used to hang out on would always ask guests to click on some of the ads - apparently the advertisers can keep track of how many hits they're getting from which site, and make decisions about where to buy advertising that way. So we guests could support the site by clicking the ads, so the ad money would keep coming in. Marion |

But I work on the principle that the cost of free publicity is - er - well - publicity. Even so I have now found ad free webspace and that reduces the problem tremendously. |

However, on the Hunger Site, they always ask you to support their advertisers, which are the only way they stay alive. Bothers me that I don't but I always tell myself 'Next time...'. I don't like pop ups and I close them up without a second thought. |

From: Jon Freeman Yes to banner ads but very rarely - it needs to be something that is of interest to me at the time and that probably eliminates 99.9% of all ads I see. I can't pretend I am very fond of them but provided a site is not littered with them, I can accept them as a means of a site getting some funding or paying for the service. Popup ads, they really do drive me mad and I try to kill them before they manage to download thier contents. I really don't know what I'd do if I let one download and found it was advertising a good price on instrument strings in the UK (highly unlikely of course) but I suspect I would visit the site rather than risk cutting off my nose to spite my face. As for the Google ads on the right hand side of the page, I have followed up on them on 2 or 3 occasions but I think only when I have been searching for a product or service. I found the ISP I use for the Annexe as a result of one of these ads. Jon |

If there's a site I frequent that has banner adds to generate revenue to support itself, yer sure as shite, I'll click away... Popups, I don't really mind, they're soo easy to close out if I don't want what they're advertising...

One notorious "On-Line Casino" has rigged their popup so that clicking the "X" opens the program, which then refuses to be closed. I generally just close IE, delete cookies, and restart somewhere else whenever I see their ad. John |

From: Tweed I tried four different "free" message board systems at my site and they all worked just fine for a while with only banners blipping and flashing at the top of the page, but after a couple months the dreaded popups would start creeping in. A few at first and then we'd get them each time a post was read or replied to. After moving the place and all the regulars for the fourth time I finally took the plunge and figured out how to run Matt's WWWboard script with no pops,banners or ads anywhere. Between rebuilding all those message boards and driving myself nuts figuring out how to run cgi-scripts I can truthfully say that if I run into a site with pops I don't linger there for long.
