Making conga drums

I just read about making didgeridoos from golf tubes and was wondering about conga drums. A few friends have talked about going to a construction company looking for 12" PVC pipes. Any ideas? (I've also posted this to the musical instrument makers forum.)

Wow, another mudcatter who goes to the musical instrument makers forum. I always feel a little out of place over there, I'm not a pro.

How about getting a big 5 gallon plastic bucket--they are used to hold everything from paint to laundry detergent. You can cut the bottom out if you need to (congas are open ended are they not?) They also have flanges around the top which might help anchor a head-stretching mechanism (lacing or the like). And they even have tapered sides.

Cumberland General Store sells all sort of wooden barrels in practically every size. We used several of them for wastebaskets/stools on our tour bus. I don't know if they would be the right dimension, but I think that a nail keg or some wooden bukets might fill the bill. You can check out the store at www.cumberlandgeneral.com
