A close relative, sung by soldiers in WW1 can be found in S Louis Giraud's book 'Songs that won the war'

Mary had a little lamb, its fleece was white as snow
Shouting out the battle cry of freedom
And everywhere that Mary went, that lamb was sure to go
Shouting out the battle cry of freedom
Hurrah for Mary, Hurrah for the lamb,
Hurrah for the teacher, who didn't care a little bit
And everywhere that Mary went, that lamb was sure to go
Shouting out the battle cry of freedom
(Spoken) Baa-aa-aa-aa-aa!

Mary had a little lamb
She tied it to a pylon
10,000 volts went up it arse
And now its wool is nylon

My father shot it dead
And now it goes to school with me
Between two hunks of bread

As I learned it, there was an "And everywhere that Mary went the lamb was sure to go" after "who didn't care a little bit".

On the 16th CD in the Voice of the People series ("You Lazy Lot of Bone-Shakers")the first verse of Track 18 (Sam Bond singing, "Where does Father Christmas go to in the summertime ?") goes "Mary had a little lamb, its fleece was white as snow
And everywhere that Mary went the lamb was sure to go
It followed her up hill and dale and fields where grass is blue
Now you know where Mary went, but tell me, tell me, do
Where does Father Christmas go to in the summertime?
Goosey, goosey gander wherever does he wander?
Does he go with the ice and snow to some other clime?
Oh, where does Father Christmas go to in the summertime?

Mary had a little lamb --
The obstetrician was amazed.

Mary had a little lamb.
Its fleece as blood was red.
This was because its fleece was soaked.
The little lamb was dead.

Mary had a little Lamb.
When asked for Its advice
On what it should be called, It answered
"Call me Jesus Christ."

Mary had a little watch.
She swallowed it one day.
The doctor gave her Ex-Lax
To pass the time away.
Mary took the Ex-Lax,
But the time, it would not pass,
So, if you want to know the time,
You can look up Mary's aunt, who has a watch too.

The original parody was Civil War era and was both a parody of Battle Cry of Freedom and Mary Had a Little Lamb

Mary had a little lamb.
Its fleece was white as snow,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
And every where that Mary went the lamb was sure to go,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

Chorus: Hurrah for Mary! Hurrah for the lamb!
Hurrah for the soldier who don't give a damn!
As we rally round the flag boys, rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

An additional verse was invented in World War Two:

Mary had a little lamb. Its fleece was black as mud,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
Every one but Mary know the lamb had the galloping crud,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

Kindest regards, Irish Sergeant

Or you can sing this to the tune of the original:

My friends they had a tabby cat
It was the cutest thing
When Linda left her sewing out
It ate a spool of thread

The cat began to peake and pine
And soon became quite frail
From the thread that ran inside
From tooth and tongue to tail

And so the vet opened her up
And cut from stem to stern
To unthread cat gut he set out
For more money than I earn.

But when he to the colon came
He said he'd done his job
That cat would have to pass the thread
Just like a sh*t-kabob.

My friends they had a little cat --
I cannot find the words --
Because everywhere that kitty went
She trailed a string of turds.

I learned a version from my father, who probably learned it in the Boys' Brigade.

Mary had a little lamb, its fleece was white as snow,
Shouting out the battlecry of freedom,
And everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go,
Shouting out the battlecry of freedom.

(Yes, it is different, honest.)

Hurrah for Mary, hurrah for the lamb,
Hurrah for the teacher, who didn't care a thr'penny bit,
We'll rally round the flag boys, and rally once again,
Shouting out the battle cry of freedom.

(there may have been a verse using it following her to school, but I don't recall it.)

ABCDEFGHIJKLM,
Shouting out the battlecry of freedom,
NOPQRSTUVWXYZ,
Shouting out the battlecry of freedom.

Chorus. Mary again, both parts)

Little Jack Horner sat in a corner, eating a Christmas pie,
Shouting out the battlecry of freedom,
He put in his thumb and pulled out plum, and said what a good boy am I,
Shouting out the battlecry of freedom.

And so on until you have run out of nursery rhymes which can be made to fit, or the adults get fed up with it, or you say "are we nearly there yet?" (We used to sing it in the car.) ......

Mac Tattie, I think "the original Mary" is a conflation of the BVM and Mary Magdalene. Any claim that she is buried in England, unless advanced by one of the Oxbridge colleges she founded, should be taken with a gram of salt.

Sam Hinton (1917-2009) learned this in his childhood:

MARY HAD A WILLIAM GOAT

Mary had a william goat,
A william goat, a william goat;
Mary had a william goat,
Its stomach was lined with zinc.

` It followed her to school one day,
School one day, school one day;
It followed her to school one day
And drank a pint of ink.

One day it ate an oyster can,
Oyster can, oyster can.
One day it ate an oyster can
And a clothesline full of shirts.

Shirts can do no harm inside,
Harm inside, harm inside.
Shirts can do no harm inside --
But an oyster can!

The can was filled with dynamite,
Dynamite, dynamite;
The can was filled with dynamite,
Which Billy thought was cheese.

Hew rubbed against poor Mary's legs,
Mary's legs, Mary's legs.
He rubbed against poor Mary's legs,
But the pain he could not ease.

A sudden flash of girl and goat,
Girl and goat, girl and goat.
A sudden flash of girl snd gost
And they no more were seen.

(Slowly)
Mary's souls to Heaven went,
Heaven went, Heaven went.
Mar's soul to Heaven went,
But Billy's went to --

(normal speed)
Whoop de doo, de doodle doo,
Doodle doo, Doodle doo.
Whoop de doo de doodle doo
(still faster!)
Billy's went to Heaven too!

And boy how sick our Mary is!
1-2-3 (etc.) counting continued until the jumper missed a turn.

Now Mary takes the lamb to school

Some other naughty-schoolboy verses I heard as a naughty schoolboy:

Mary had a little lamb.
She tied it to the heater,
And every time it turned around,
It burned its little peter.

Mary had a little lamb.
She tied it to the sink,
And every time it turned around,
It froze its little dink.

Eric, I've combined the two parody threads. It gets really confusing when there are two current threads going on the same subject. You should have posted your "fenian" question on the existing thread.

In the version in the Digital Tradition (click), it's "sojer boys." I think it's one of those fill-in-the-blank kinda things.

The "Fenian Boys" were members of the Fenian Brotherhood, a 19th century precursor to the Irish Republican Army that had operations both in Ireland and the U.S.

The song, of course, is a parody of the U.S. Civil War song, "Battle Cry of Freedom." I wonder how the parody came to be. According to "Irish Sergeant" in the other thread, the parody also comes from the U.S. Civil War. I found credible verification of that in a couple of Civil War books, including this one (click). This reference to the parody is dated 1867. This 1878 version comes from Yale University.

Here's the verse I like best:
    Mary had a little lamb,
    Her father shot it dead;
Now Mary takes the lamb to school
    Between two hunks of bread.
-Joe-

The best selection of verses I've found is at this page:

Battle Cry of Freedom (Mary's Lamb)

Battle Cry of Freedom (Lamb eating hurrah!)
Oh, Mary had a little lamb; his fleece was white as snow
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
And everywhere that Mary went; the lamb was sure to go
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

    (CHORUS)
    Hurrah for Mary
    Hurrah for the Lamb
    Hurrah for the soldiers
    Who didn't give a damn
If all the lambs in Washington
    went marching off to school
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

Oh, Mary had a little lamb
his hoof was black as soot
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
and everywhere the lamb he went
    his sooty foot he put
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

    (Chorus)

Oh, Mary had a little lamb
    she fed him very well
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
One day she fed him powder
and she blew him all to pieces*1
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

    (Chorus)

Oh, Mary had a little lamb
but now the lamb is dead
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
But she still takes him to school
between two slices of fresh bread*2
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

    (Chorus)

Why do the men love mutton so
    The captain he did cry
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
Because it makes their whiskers grow
    the sergeant he replied
Shouting the battle cry of freedom*3

    (Chorus)

    Well, we'd eaten all the ewes;
and we'd eaten all the rams
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
And all that we had left then
    was Mary's little lamb
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

    (Chorus)

So we shot him very nicely
and we skinned him very kind
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
and we served him with potatoes
    and he really didn't mind
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

    (Chorus)

Oh and when this war is over
we'll get new ewes and rams
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
and we'll give them all to Mary
and she can have the lambs
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

    (Chorus)

    Mary had a little lamb, it was always on the go;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
So she staked it to a grassy spot along the
    Shenandoah;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!

    (Chorus)

And often she would let it loose,
    along the bank to play;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
The soldiers eyed it from the shore
    in a slightly thieving way;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!

    (Chorus)

    It swam across the Shenandoah,
    the soldiers saw it too;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
    And speedily it simmered down
    into a mutton stew;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!

    (Chorus)

And Mary never more did see
    her darling little lamb;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
For the boys in blue they chawed it up
    and didn't care a damn;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!

    (Chorus)

Oh Mary had a little lamb
    She also had a bear
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
I've often seen her little lamb
    I've never seen her bear
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

    (Chorus)

Oh the officers the get good food
    They eat pretty fine
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
When it comes to eating lambchops
    They ain't getting mine
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

    (Chorus)

You can eat your hard tack
Though it surely makes you swell
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
And the fellow that invented it
    Has surely gone to blazes
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

    (Chorus)

When Mary had a little lamb
    The doctors were surpised
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
But when Old MacDonald had a farm
You should have seen their eyes
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

    (Chorus)

    NOTES on dear sweet Mary

1 (she could also have blown him all to "well" or
"hell", but since that's what EVERYONE
expects I think it sounds better the way Greg B.
    sings it, which is PIECES....!!!!....Ed.)

    2(Alternatives I've heard...
But she still takes him to school with her
between two slices of fresh bread

But she still takes him to shool with her
    between two hunks of bread)

3( This is my best recollection of the verse
    Glen H. always sings...corrections?)

Additional verses will be gladly accepted and
incorporated here, we reserve the right to keep
the story line in the pseudo correct order (she
must have had a number of little lambs, all of
whom suffered pretty much the same fate…).

Mary had a little lamb
Its fleece was black as charcoal
It stuck its head behind its legs
And whistled up its arsehole
