24 Sep 13 - 06:13 PM (#3560971) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mary Had a Little Lamb (parody) From: Joe Offer Eric, I've combined the two parody threads. It gets really confusing when there are two current threads going on the same subject. You should have posted your "fenian" question on the existing thread. In the version in the Digital Tradition (click), it's "sojer boys." I think it's one of those fill-in-the-blank kinda things. The "Fenian Boys" were members of the Fenian Brotherhood, a 19th century precursor to the Irish Republican Army that had operations both in Ireland and the U.S. The song, of course, is a parody of the U.S. Civil War song, "Battle Cry of Freedom." I wonder how the parody came to be. According to "Irish Sergeant" in the other thread, the parody also comes from the U.S. Civil War. I found credible verification of that in a couple of Civil War books, including this one (click). This reference to the parody is dated 1867. This 1878 version comes from Yale University. Here's the verse I like best:
Her father shot it dead; Now Mary takes the lamb to school Between two hunks of bread. The best selection of verses I've found is at this page:
