BS: love poem for wedding

Subject: love poem for wedding
From: alison

My sister (Rosie) is over here to get married on Monday....

what I'd like is a shortish love poem / verse for the end of the ceremony (outdoor ceremony on a beautiful headland looking out to sea)..... nothing too soppy.... anyone got any they particularly like?

thanks

Alison,

Get a hold of the Big Mick. No, what I mean is contact him. He found a poem for me to read at a friend's wedding, and it was just the thing. You might also try to find a similar thread I began about three years ago.

Good luck, D

Well even though El Swanno went with Mick's idea, I gave him one then and I'll suggest it to you too............How about a really nice and heartfelt rendering of "Row, Row, Row, Your Boat?"

Just a thought.........

Alison, there's this one which I wrote for my daughter's wedding. Several friends have used it. One couple changed the pronouns, turned to their audience and said it as a wish to them because they wanted to show how grateful they were that all had attended.

Not sure if it fits, but you are welcome to use it, if so.

I have no idea of and make no claims as to the claimed authenticity of this via another website, but it's kind of nice...not sure if it's anything you can use, but, oh well, what the hell, here 'tis(!):

End of the Wedding Toast: The wedding party gathers around the bride and groom. All fill their glasses with mead and the newly wedded couple recites an Irish toast: "Friends and relatives, so fond and dear, 'tis our greatest pleasure to have you here. When many years this day has passed, fondest memories will always last. So we drink a cup of Irish mead and ask God's blessing in your hour of need." The guests respond: "On this special day, our wish to you, the goodness of the old, the best of the new. God bless you both who drink this mead, may it always fill your every need."

I found one site that, for the pittance of $35US, they will write a poem, speech, toast, etc. for an Irish wedding abroad, relevant to the assumed Irish audience! They have a similar service for all manner of events!

i recall a nice poem by the author of the prophet.. one which we read at our wedding -- with an image about two pillars holding up a building--both facing the same way-- rather thatn one following the other..

Then Almitra spoke again and said, "And what of Marriage, master?"
And he answered saying:
You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when white wings of death scatter your days.
Aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they
quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together, yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.

ooooooooohhhhhhhh thats pretty.... thanks guest

wedding went brilliantly... absolutely gorgeous day.... glorious sunshine and not a breeze (important seeing as they got married on a headland).... then onto an idyllic restaurant on the banks of a river.... (Rosie walked down the forest path to the ceremony, to the sound of me playing a slow waltz version of "star of the county down" on the harp......)... plenty of music and songs throughout the day....... thanks for all the thoughts and good wishes

I'll post some pics when I get round to it.......

Last October we flew from the UK to our son's wedding in Seattle WA. At the ceremony I was asked to read a piece by Raymond Carver that begins "I look up and see them walking down the beach"

I don't have the full text with me here at work but I'll post it when I get home.

Here is the text of the Raymond Carver thing:

"I look up and see them starting down the beach.

The young man is wearing a packboard to carry the baby.

This leaves his hands free so that he can take one of his wife's hands in his, and swing his other.

Anyone can see how happy they are.

And intimate.

How steady.

They are happier than anyone else, and they know it. Are gladdened by it, and humbled.

They walk to the end of the beach and out of sight.

That's it, I think, and return to this thing governing my life.

But in a few minutes they come walking back along the beach.

The only thing different is that they've changed sides.

He is on the other side of her now, the ocean side.

She is on this side.

But they are still holding hands.

Even more in love, if that's possible.

And it is.

Having been there for a long time myself.

Theirs has been a modest walk, fifteen minutes down the beach, fifteen minutes back.

They've had to pick their way over some rocks and around huge logs, tossed up from where the sea ran wild.

They walk quietly, slowly, holding hands.

They know the water is out there but they're so happy that they ignore it.

The love in their young faces.

The surround of it.

Maybe it will last forever

If they are lucky, and good, and forebearing. And careful.

If they go on loving each other without stint.

Are true to each other - that most of all."

I don't have the full text, but a friend used the poem from the film 'Odette' which was used between Odette and her husband as the basis for their encriptions when working behind enemy lines for the S.O.E.
One line at least,br "And the love that I have, of the life that I have is yours"

Code Poem For The French Resistance--Leo Marks

The life that I have
Is all that I have,
And the life that I have is yours.
The love that I have
Of the life that I have,
Is yours and yours and yours.
A sleep I shall have,
A rest I shall have,
Yet death will be but a pause.
For the peace of my years
In the long green grass,
Will be yours and yours and yours.

This is really more appropriate for a funeral than a wedding, I copied and pasted it from an undertakers web-site which we have saved on the enquiry desk favourites as it's the sort of thing we are asked for fairly regularly.

Yes, FAIR ONE, I am still on the planet, though rarely in the same spot on the planet for too long a time. Life has been a bit hectic for.............Oohhhhh.........the last several years or so..................LOL.

Please pass on my best wishes to Rosie and the lucky lad that won her heart.

I only got home from my Toronto, Cincinnatti trip this morning shortly after midnight. Sorry I missed this. I will find the thing I sent Dave and post it anyway.

It was a sort of a toast thing that I wrote, I think this is it:

How then can I say what I wish both of you this day?
I wish your love be timeless, eternal, and ever young
I wish that all you dream, be made whole in the love and partnership you pledge to one another today
I wish that every joy and every heartache that you must bear in this life, be borne in the loving partnership that you begin in this place and on this day
And I wish that all the love felt for you both by those gathered here today, nurtures you both and helps you on the way.

I had a strange request - to sing "She moved through the fair" at a wedding. I tactfully suggested that they choose another song. Hardly appropriate since the proposed bride (or bridegroom, depending on the version) dies mysteriously ! In retrospect it might have been appropriate for my two weddings which each ended in divorce. Just kidding, of course, both my exes are alive and kicking and I wish them well (kinda!).

I think I've missed the wedding, but to my mind there's nothing that compares with Shakespeare's Sonnet # 116:

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments; love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no, it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his highth be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come,
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

AAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.............................
