I've been trying to find this song from WW1 era... Title (?) "Shoving right off for home again" Lyrics contain (...It may be Shanghai, Farewell and goodbye, Sally and Sue - don't be blue, it may not be for years and years and then, shoving right of for home again." My Dad (ex navy) used to sing this song in the late 1930s. Thank you for your help, Fred

SONG OF THE MARINES

Over the sea, let's go men,
We're shoving right off, we're shoving right off again
Nobody knows where or when, We're shoving right off, we're shoving right off again
It may be Shanghai, farewell and good-bye,
Sally and Sue, don't be blue,
For we'll just be gone for years and years and then,
We're shoving right off for home,
Shoving right for home,
Shoving right off for home again

Not a lot more than what you have, but it was the only hit.

THE SONG OF THE MARINES (WE'RE SHOVIN' RIGHT OFF AGAIN)

Written for: The Singing Marine (1937)
Lyric: Al Dubin
Music: Harry Warren
Year: 1937
Original publisher: Remick Music Corp.

Verse:

There's gotta be pork, there's gotta be beans,
In order to fill up and fatten the fightin' Marines,
The mighty Marines,
We carry all our vitamins inside a little can,
For corned beef is a delicacy in China or Japan;
And so, we're ready to go, wherever we go,
We know that we go prepared
To fight the foe or see that we keep 'em scared,
On land we always land a bit of femininity,
And then we hear the bugle blow,
And where the heck are we?

Chorus:

Over the sea let's go, men!
We're shovin' right off,
We're shovin' right off again;
Nobody knows where or when,
We're shovin' right off,
We're shovin' right off again.
It may be Shanghai,
Farewell and goodbye;
Sally and Sue, don't be blue;
We'll just be gone for years and years and then,
We're shovin' right off for home again!

It's on Songs Of The U.S. Armed Forces sung by The Sun Harbor Men's Chorus.

This song, "Over the seas let's go men" is included at the end of an "Extra" on the DVD of "Thank Your Lucky Stars." That "Extra" is entitled, "Three Cheers for the Girls," and the song is sung by Dick Powell, in a navy uniform, along with a chorus of men in navy uniforms.

The line, "shovin right off for home" was sung repeatedly in some cartoon I watched 50 years ago - Bugs Bunny? Daffy Duck? I think the character was swabbing the deck at the time.

Been looking for this song, also. My mom sang it and gave me the name Sally because her name was Sue. She must have seen the movie,
"The Singing Marine." With Dick Powell singing it. 1937 Movie. So glad I found the song. Also was sung in the cartoon, "Conrad the Sailor."

I remember hearing this as a boy.

Another popular parody:

The first Marine went over the top parlay vous

"                     "                   "
the first Marine went over the top and picked up the pennies the Canadians dropped inky dinky parlay vous.
