If you know the song (in whatever form) you can teach it to them. This is known as oral transmission and is THE way that folk songs are passed on to others. If you have access to the Silver Burdett music education series of books and CD's, it's very likely to be in there. The five verses I know off the top of my head:

We also have lots of songs you'd like right here in the Digital Tradition. You can even download the tune and print it up with MIDI software like Noteworthy Composer. There's a company in Miami called CPP/Belwin that publishes a book called "Life of the Party." Volume 1 has 175 songs, and Volume 2 has 88. These are simple, familiar songs - but not necessarily children's songs. I think they might be just what you need. The company prints a complete book with lyrics and tune, and then smaller companion books with just the lyrics. Reader's Digest also has books like that - a music book, plus singalong lyrics books. You should be able to get the CPP/Belwin books at most large music stores. Hal Leonard also has a number of books that might help you. A good place to look is at Amazon.com. Some of these verses were noted as early as 1850 (see Epstein) and lines such as "reel and totter" may be applied to both ships and chariots. Whether these Negro spirituals originally were adapted from White hymns or whether the early White gospel singers adapted Negro spirituals is open to dispute. |
