Origins: She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain

Subject: She'll Be Comming Around the Mountain
From: oman1586@aol.com

How hard should it be to find the words and music to a Public Domain, Childhood, Schooldays standard like this one? I volunteer for an adult educationally handicapped theatre group and they've requested a sing along of this one. It's easy enough to fake it but that would be patronizing to my students. Any help? Thank You, if.

I don't agree that "faking it" would be patronizing to your students. If you know the song (in whatever form) you can teach it to them. This is known as oral transmission and is THE way that folk songs are passed on to others.

If you have access to the Silver Burdett music education series of books and CD's, it's very likely to be in there.

The five verses I know off the top of my head:

She'll be coming 'round the mountain when she comes (2x)
She'll be coming 'round the mountain (2x)
She'll be coming 'round the mountain when she comes.

She'll be driving six white horses...

We will all go out to meet her when she comes...

We will kill the old red rooster...

Then we'll all have chicken and dumplings...

I don't suggest the following for your group (though I do suggest they make up their own verses to add to the traditional ones) but I've heard risque verses such as

Everybody asks her did she come (2x)
A thing they wouldn't have to mention if they only paid attention
Every body asks her did she come

She's got a lovely titty
lating smile (2)
She's got a lovely titti-, a lovely titti-
A lovely tillilating smile

She's got a lovely bottom
set of teeth .....

Oh ye canna push yer granny off the bus (2x)
Oh ye canna push yer granny for she's your mammy's mammy
Oh ye canna push yer granny off the bus

Saying I will if you will, so will I (2x)
I will if you will, I will if you will,
I will if you will, so will I

Here is a link to a good source for lyrics to songs for children. We also have lots of songs you'd like right here in the Digital Tradition. You can even download the tune and print it up with MIDI software like Noteworthy Composer.
There's a company in Miami called CPP/Belwin that publishes a book called "Life of the Party." Volume 1 has 175 songs, and Volume 2 has 88. These are simple, familiar songs - but not necessarily children's songs. I think they might be just what you need. The company prints a complete book with lyrics and tune, and then smaller companion books with just the lyrics. Reader's Digest also has books like that - a music book, plus singalong lyrics books. You should be able to get the CPP/Belwin books at most large music stores. Hal Leonard also has a number of books that might help you.
A good place to look is at Amazon.com. Search for "songbook" or "songbooks," and you'll be amazed what's available.

I've also heard a it sung with a parenthetical call-back in the 2-beat rest after each line, which seems to liven it up. e.g.:

She'll be driving six white horses when she comes ("Whoa, boy!")

We'll all come out to meet her when she comes ("Hi, babe!")

We will kill the old red rooster when she comes (2-note crowing)

Then we'll all have chicken and dumplings when she comes("Yum, yum!")

Cheers, Hester

Oh, yes, and the call-back for the first verse:

She'll be coming around the mountain when she comes ("Yee-ha!")

On the repetition of the first verse to close the song, all the call-backs from the other verses are piled up in order at the end of the last line.

As well, the call-backs are shouted rather than sung.

Cheers, Hester

Here's an early gospel version:

WHEN THE CHARIOT COMES
From: Old Plantation Hymns (1899)

O who will drive the chariot when she cu-hu-hu-hu-hums?
O who will drive the chariot when she comes?
O who will drive the chariot? O who will drive the chariot?
O who will drive the chariot when she comes?

King Jesus, he'll be driver, when she cu-hu-hu-hu-hums, etc.

She'll be loaded with bright angels, etc.

She will neither rock not totter, etc.

She will run so level and steady, etc.

She will take us to the portills, etc.

"When the Chariot Comes" is similar to "Old Ship of Zion" VIII ("Don't Ye View Dat Ship"), from Fenner, 1874, in thread 41005: Old Ship of Zion VIII
Also note that similar verses are in other versions of the "Old Ship of Zion." Some of these verses were noted as early as 1850 (see Epstein) and lines such as "reel and totter" may be applied to both ships and chariots.
Whether these Negro spirituals originally were adapted from White hymns or whether the early White gospel singers adapted Negro spirituals is open to dispute.

The Ship of Zion, 2nd version, in T. W. Higginson, "Negro Spirituals," 1867: Negro Spirituals
The "reel and totter," "sailin' steady" and "angels for the sailors," appear here. If a "humm-mmn" or similar is added at the end of the repeated lines, the scan approaches "She'll be comin..." but the last line of each verse doesn't fit.

The version I learned first is Canadian and instead of the call-backs, the verses have an additional rhyming last line.

She'll be commin' 'round the mountain when she comes, etc.
She'll be commin' 'round the mountain,
She'll be yellin' she'll be shoutin'
She'll be commin' 'round the mountain when she comes.

She'll be drivin' a mule and wagon
And her feet will be a draggin'

Oh we'll all run out to meet her
With a hug and kiss we'll greet her

Oh we'll kill the old red rooster
'cause he don't crow like he uster

I still like that version best but my nursing home and kid audiences in the States like the cumulative call-backs.
Have fun.

Proper German lyrics

Though much better know with improper lyrics:

Von den blauen Bergen kommen wir
unser Lehrer ist genauso blöd wie wir
mit der Brille auf der Nase
sieht er aus wie'n Osterhase
von den blaeun Bergen kommen wir. (version when I was at school)

And still in living tradition, for my daughter recently has sung me new improper lyrics.

Wolfgang - I remember having sung the German version when in primary school, but we only knew the verse you give here. Would you care to give us the improper verses your daughter is singing now?

For those interested in a translation:

Von den blauen Bergen kommen wir
We are coming from the blue mountains.
Unser Lehrer ist genau so blöd wie wir.
Our teacher ist just as stupid as ourselves.
Mit der Brille auf der Nase
With spectacles upon his nose
Sieht er aus wie'n Osterhase.
he is looking like an easter bunny.
Von den blauen Bergen kommen wir.
We are coming from the blue mountains.

The version dates from the times when AFN started in Germany (1945), and a lot of tunes could be heard which attracted children.

Here's another song based on "Coming 'Round the Mountain":

They'll Be Coming
Traditional music, words by Eileen Abrams
Tune of "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain

1. Bumpy wagons moving thru the days & nights
They've been travelin' far in search of human rights
Not much comfort or supporters but within this country's borders
They won't quit until they've won all of the fights

CHORUS
They'll be comin' round the mountain when they come
They'll be drivin' six white horses when they come
They'll be talkin' new solutions, women's suffrage, revolution
And we'll all go out to meet them when they come.

2. In Colorado women sought a victory,
Mrs. Stanton headed out with Susan B.
Organizing, speaking, writing, for us all they kept on fighting
Women won the vote out there in '93 CHORUS

3. Women ride (rise?) & join your sisters on the line
It's been struggle after stuggle all the time
Keep your mind upon our heritage, your hearts upon the future
And we'll make it thru the tight spots every time! CHORUS

The song, with lyrics ©1976 by Eileen Abrams, is on page 251 of the Rise Up Singing Songbook.

I'd like to know more about Eileen Abrams and the background of this song.

A few decades back I heard an "Alaskan" parody of this on "Pairee Home Companion"
"She'll be comin' 'oer the tundra when she comes"
Is anybody familiar with this?
Some verses were ....
"She'll be driving six white huskies .....etc"

She'll be wearing silk pajamas...
Next verse She'll be wearing no pajamas

Love the aussie verses!

What a great site this is. Who else would actually wonder where a song like this *comes from* - (sigh of pleasure).
