(psst - no need to bump up for about 23 hours or so; they always remain on the default page for a day.)

Yes - the song is by Graham Moore and has been recorded by a number of people.

I was able to find a few partial lyrics on google. Haven't bothered to post as anyone can do the same - and since they aren't complete.

We have a success.  I found this on a German website. Weird... Actually Moi found it..lol   here you go Mario! Maybe you can answer the question at the end of the lyrics?

TOM PAINE'S BONES
    D                            A                      h                        G
As I roved out one evening by a river of discontent
  D                                      f#                              A                                               G
I bumped straight into old Tom Paine as running down the road he went
                 D                              A                           h                          G
He said, "I can't stop right now child, King George is after me
          D                       f#                                    A                                         G
He'd have a rope around my throat and hang me on the Liberty Tree."

CHORUS:
         D                        A                         h                        G
I will dance to Tom Paine's bones dance to Tom Paine's bones
D                                   f#                               A                                        G(D)
Dance in the oldest boots I own to the rhythm of Tom Paine's bones.

I only talked about freedom And justice for everyone
But since the very first word I spoke I've been looking down the barrel of a gun
And they say I preached revolution, Let me say in my defence
That all I did wherever I went was to talk a lot of common sense.

Chorus

Old Tom Paine, he ran so fast he left me standing still
And there I was, a piece of paper in my hand, standing at the top of the hill
And it said, "This is the Age of Reason these are the Rights of Man
Kick off religion and monarchy" it was written there in Tom Paine's plan.

Chorus

Old Tom Paine, there he lies nobody laughs and nobody cries
Where he's gone or how he fares nobody knows – and nobody cares.

Chorus

the site also has it in musical notation form.  one question though.  what's the "h"?

They were talking about that on the forum once - it (the 'h') is used in german and I think french music notation for one of the "standard" chords - but I misremeber which - as I don't know a chord from a bunch of stovewood I don't even try to remmeber that kinda stuff. It causes my brain cell to break out in a nervous sweat and then lint sticks to it.

Care to share the url of the site you found it on? Always good to give credit...

Hmmm.................... I'd say that lower case seems to mean minor so f# would be F#m in English, and h would be Bm. They'd naturally fit with the A and D chords. ???????

What do we think?

Needs cleanup and verification

Patience says: Wm. Cobbett brought Tom Paine’s bones back from New Rochelle to England; the intended monument was never built.

Not only that, Joe,
but nobody knows where the bones ARE:
somebody, erm, misplaced them. What a saga.

TOM PAINE'S BONES
(Graham Moore)

As I dreamed out one evening by a river of discontent
I bumped right into old Tom Paine
As a-running down the road he went
He said I can’t stop right now my son King Georgy’s after me
He’ll have a rope around my throat and hang me on the liberty tree

Chorus (twice after each verse):
And I will dance to Tom Paine’s bones
Dance to Tom Paine’s bones
I'll dance in the oldest boots I own
To the rhythm of Tom Paine’s bones

He said I just spoke about freedom and justice for everyone
Ever since the very first word I spoke
I’ve been looking down the barrel of a gun
Well they say I preached revolution but let me say in my defence
All I did wherever I went was to talk a lot of ‘Common Sense’

Well old Tom Paine he ran so fast he left me standing still
And there I was a piece of paper in my hand
Standing at the top of the hill
And it said, “This is “The Age of Reason’, these are ‘The Rights of Man‘
Kick off religion and monarchy”, it was written there in Tom Paine’s plan

[ Old American nursery rhyme: ]
Poor old Tom Paine there he lies
Nobody laughs, nobody cries
Where he’s gone or how he fares
Nobody knows and nobody cares

Last chorus (twice):
But I will dance to Tom Paine’s bones
Dance to Tom Paine’s bones
I'll dance in the oldest boots I own
To the rhythm of Tom Paine’s bones

I always thought Dick Gaughan wrote that.

I heard it sung a while back by a young guy who'd learnt it from a Gaughan recording, which was in Gaughan's usual unpredictable timing. He figured out you could just do it in 7/4 straight through. Worked really well.

Doesn't mean they can't build a statue in his memory if they really want to.
