Lyr Req: That First Love of Mine (Montana Slim)

I've been thinking of an old song that my 15-year-old brother and I at 13 often sang together with great feeling when we were so homesick for Oregon after having moved with our family to Virginia.

We moved in 1949 so this song was around before then.

The first verse goes: (I may have the lines slightly mixed)

Sweetheart, I'm dreaming still of our childhood days
Life seemed so full of joy, sorrows far away
But when we said goodbye it just broke my heart
You're my first and only love; why did we ever part

My question is who recorded it that early? I find that a lot of different people recorded it, (assuming it's the same song) but some were done much later than the 40s.

Could it have been Montana Slim (Wilf Carter)? According to the 'net, he recorded it- but I can't find a RealAudio version. I know I'd remember the voice.

Thanks, Masato! I've been sitting here playing all those clips. What fun. I had forgotten that it was Carter we learned many of those songs from.

I remember Wilf Carter/Montana Slim was our favorite in the '40s- until the first time we heard Hank Williams! (But HW didn't yodel much.)

Montana Slim and Elton Britt were my favorite yodelers when I was a kid. Later, of course, I liked Kenny Roberts and some others.

Thanks for reviving some memories for me!

I used to know this one, Wilf Carter was my first singing hero, but, I have forgotten many of his songs. However, I can give you the e mail address of a Canadian friend who knows more about this sort of thing than anyone else I know. cgtaylor@nbnet.nb.ca Gerry is a good friend, and a really nice guy.

We just dug out our old records and had a blast listening to a favourite one of Montana Slim. Thanks for this thread and the links! I'd forgotten how much I loved his singing and songs!
