05 Aug 02 - 01:46 AM (#759889) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: X Genie: Sept. 29th. or 30th? Sunday is always best for my little crew. Amos? Hugh |
05 Aug 02 - 03:22 AM (#759903) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: X Hi: I just fired an email off to Bear and Janet with Genie's dates. Please keep in mind that Sundays always seem to be the best days for my crew. But we can jam sooner. Later, Hugh |
05 Aug 02 - 09:35 AM (#759999) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: Amos My version of the September 02 calendar shows the weekend being the 28-29th. I'd suggest same place on September 1st, then again on the 29th? Whatever works for you-all is okay with me, Hugh. A |
05 Aug 02 - 01:22 PM (#760116) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: Genie You're right, Amos, it is the 28th-29th. Saturday afternoon is clearer for me (I have a retirement home gig in Rancho Pe–asquitos from 3:30 to 4:30 on Sunday -- though I might persuade them to move it to 2:00PM). If the jam goes as late as 6 or 7 PM or starts as early as 1 or 2 PM, I could be there for part of it on Sunday, anyway. But I know you've got several people's schedules to coordinate, so just let me know what y'all come up with. Genie |
05 Aug 02 - 01:39 PM (#760125) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: X I can bend. Sun. 1st of Sept, and than Sat. 28th of Sept? The same place is good. I love the park. I'll see what my people have to say. Hugh |

08 Aug 02 - 01:19 AM (#761704) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: Genie Well, if it's on Saturday, any time in the afternoon is fine with me. If it's Sunday, my vote would be to start at 1:00 or earlier (even noon, maybe make it a brown bag thing). Genie |

08 Aug 02 - 08:09 PM (#762207) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: Genie Banjoest, the key is the word "anytime." On Sunday (as it stands now) I would not be able to be at Balboa Park between about 2:45 and 5:15 PM. So if we started at noon, I'd have almost 3 hours before I had to leave. (If I can change the time of my gig, I might be able to come at 3:45-ish and stay till whenever--in the event that you folks opt for a later jam.) On Saturday, so far, I have no such restrictions. Genie |
08 Aug 02 - 09:20 PM (#762236) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: X Uh? Genie: We're shooting for Sat. on the weekend you're down. Amos, isn't that right? That's what I told Bear and Janet. Hugh |

The one Genie will be here will be the 28th of September. We also talked about Sunday the 1st -- same place. Howzzat seem? I might be able to lure down another banjo player, for grins, if you like, but not if it'll crowd your style! :>) Whatchoo think? A |

Banjoest, I wish I had known you liked Sea Shanteys, I was going to ask for one but decided you guys were playing what you liked, I'd be quiet. Next time I'll speak out. 14 Aug 02 - 03:36 PM (#765358) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: Genie Hugh, a squeezebox is a musical intrument, a G-string is something on a guitar, and the rest was just a description of a picnic with music. Can I help it if Amos's mind is in the gutter? Or yours, for that matter -- weren't you the one who asked if "picking banjos and guitars" was a euphemism for something else? (Kinda remind me of the patient whose psychiatrist drew a wavy line, a circle, and a straight line and asked him what he "saw" in the drawings.) 14 Aug 02 - 06:30 PM (#765470) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: X Embarrassing? In 1980 I was working in a top 40s country band as a pedal steel player. My amp wasn't polarized with the sound system and I didn't realize it. It was time to introduce the band and that job fell on me. I reached for the mike and placed it near my lips and ZAP! A big blue spark flew from the mike to my lips and I yelled F**K! as loud as I could into the mike. Every head in the church turned, we were playing a barbecue that The Lady of "What Ever it Was" in Descanco, CA. throws every year. We played that evening and after playing that gig for five years we were never asked back. Hugh |

I have to envy youse guys & I wish I could get there but that won't happen. It's a wonderful place for singing - so much to look at and a constantly changing scene. I do suggest your venue moves around the park from time to time. Even right in the middle of your jam. I had the pleasure of holding the West Coast meeting there a few years ago of one of our local folk groups...the Folking Roly Rounders. The FRR is the Official, nation-wide organization for those who sing/play folk songs while rollersblading. I skated and sang all through the park and had one of the most interesting and enjoyable afternoons of my life. Wish I could join you. |

28 Sep 02 - 08:15 PM (#793227) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: Amos Well. folks, we had another bang-up day in the park with scads of good songs rising up and being sung, a little of the right lubricant being provided hother and yon, and some first rate picking and strumming and even bowing on the bass fiddle. Genie provided sheet music, and we learned a few new ones, and sang ourselves hoarse on ones we'd learned in the dim reaches of childhood. Banjoest, Sue, Genie, Bear and Bard and and all the others who came -- many thanks!! I had a wunnerful time. And so did BBW!! A |
29 Sep 02 - 09:09 AM (#793396) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: Genie Yup, from "Wildwood Flower," to "Night Rider's Lament," from "Dead Dog Cider" to "I'll Fly Away," from "Lorena" to "Unreconstructed Rebel," from "City Of New Orleans" to "The Viagra Song (Hard Times Come Again Once More), and from from "Amazing Grace" to "Lay, Lady, Lay," we played and sang up a storm and sometimes drew an audience. Weather was perfect by me -- cool enough to stay covered up from the UV rays most of the time, but warm enough for the fingers -- and no rain (which the morning clouds seemed to threaten us with). In fine Mudcat tradition, Amos refused his wife's request for "Danny Boy," but she got right into the groove with the jammers, anyway. Even Amos and Daly's daughter, Ariel, joined us briefly from the Bay Area via cell phone, so she could hear the old man pickin' and singin' with the rest of us. We jammed from a little after noon till about 4-ish, when finger blisters began to take their toll. BTW, I had never been in that section of Balboa Park. It's abso-posi-lutely spectacular! Gotta do these jams more often. Genie |

BTW, I just stopped by a fine little coffeeshop called "Twiggs" which has a performance space attached to it -- small but serviceable. They run an open mike, Wednesday nights, and then schedule performers for Thurs through Sat. They have a Ceilidh on Sundays. Dunno what they do evenings and Mon-Tues, but it might be a place to gather when the weather's too inclement for park gathering. My house is also open for bad weather gathers -- we have a medium size music room. A |

03 Oct 02 - 02:41 PM (#796291) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: Genie From the interest shown by the passersby, I imagine the jams may spontaneously grow if they are held on a semi-regular basis. Word gets around. Even for this one, we had some drop-ins singing along on "Ripple" (and the parody) and on "Amazing Grace" and maybe a couple of others. Also, Susan, Keith could've borrowed a guitar from one of us for a song or two. (Some of us were getting blisters, as it was.) Even if someone comes sans instruments, I'm sure they can find a way to join in. Genie |

22 Oct 02 - 01:42 PM (#808654) Subject: RE: Balboa Park Jam. Another one? From: Amos When you enter Balboa Park from the bridge at Laurel and 6th, and walk straight on in, you come to a large reflecting pool on your left; at the end of it there is a large arboretum made of lathwood but shaped a little like the Taj Mahal. If you go toward the arboretum you'll see a large greensward leading up to a tree on your right. We'll be setting around -- look for a bunch of geeks with string instruments. I'll be the one without a beard. (Surprise!) :>) See you there guys!! Sunday at 1200 it is. Regards, A |
