The suit did look a little like a heavy day at the desalination plant, but I managed to snap the largest crystals off. The only sticky moments were when asked what were my greatest motivators are; I responded with "The voices in me head" and stared in an unfortunate and prolonged manner at the panel. And I regret the bit about my interests outside work. I think that "a bit of DIY" and "doin the garden" was more acceptable to them than explanations about naked cycling with me wife, Gary, my dairy farm and ameteur drivelling. Still, it wasn't a bad performance. I will keep you informed. I did get a bit tired last night and wisely turned down D Whistle Division's offer of a lift. I missed a good session by all accounts. I will try to feel a little less gloomy this evening get me arse down to Goxhill. Cheers everyone.

Having said that it is first and formost a musicians night although we don't mind the occasional song. |

WAP is very useful too, though more suited to slow airs. However, I do feel a little self- conscious when playing dots projected into my 3D virtual reality helmet, but it is in keeping with the tradition. |

I don't get it, hence the reason I try and avoid singers sessions. In your previose thread you talk about all types of music,well, I have been singing for more years than I care to mention and always thought singing was music. Regarding the "etiquette thing",I have always given best of order to everyone,whether good bad or indifferant,that does include instrumentals.That is not etiquette that is just good manners and respect.Any one who gets up in front of people to do any thing musical or poetical deserves that.Sadly over the years I have observed that kind of respect dissapear,not just in this country but in Ireland as well,were I visit quite a lot.But the thing that realy depresses me is that the people who should know better, musicians/ singers are usually the ones most at fault. Unlike you I do not try and avoid anything musicly,or otherwise,especially places were I can contribute to the event,and hopefully improve and learn a little,and give respect and encouragement to people who have come to do the same.I believe we are missing the point somewere if we keep following the preciouse idea of a time and place for everything and every body. I think that what you do is great and I'm not being at all precious the singers I try to discourage at our session are those who think they can sing but can't (one example had the entire pub in an uproar and was embarrasing herself so was asked not to sing but we tollerated her for three sessions before pulling the plug). I've been around a long time too and I've seen the errosion of good manners both here and abroad, but it dosn't mean we have to tollerate it. And I don't think that you've got the message at all in fact I think that you are missing the point completely. I will restate: there are lots of different session some sing arounds, some mixed and some musicians sessions, all are welcome to ours but because of the origional intentions of the session i.e. to allow something different (how many scottish sessions in england do you know of). The session, as all sessions, has changed and as such it is a great melting pot of styles and that is great. But the point is that it is a musicians session that WELCOMES (I repeat WELCOMES) occasional singers. SO tell me whats wrong with that? |

However I thhink we are both right in some respects. I suppose I am a bit intollerant of things that I don't like (but hey that's my right) but being a piper I am also aware that pipes are not people's favourite instrument and their very presence in a session can cause people all kinds of problems. I am aware of that and adjust the amount that I contribute to a session accordingly. It was once written that a piper should play no more than 4 sets in a session inorder not to upset people - I tend to stick to that, I could play all night. I try to be considerate can the same be said of someone who sings a 40 verse dirge? |

Hmmmm, playing an accordion and having a voice like a goose farting in a fog, I feel eminently well qualified to sit in judgement on this one, as everyones' least favourite sessioneer. And my judgement is............. sessions evolve. I came to the Nag's Head session in Wootton in '97, and I now know it was during a time of change. It was a hard-core tune session of a very high standard of play. Then, it came about that an acapella version of Wheel of Fortune was sung by the entire pub whilst the musos put their fiddles away. Then a good frined of mine started attending, and did the odd song, to a fairly silent accompaniment. Slowly, the hot-shot musicians fell away (allegedly stating it had become too songy) and it has now evolved into a new, equally happy incarnation of mostly tunes, some songs, and a happy enough atmosphere for a Sunday night. So I find in favour of both parties, in that Mick's credentials as a musician make him elligible to do his hallmark roof-raising at the Hase, and John in his difficult mission with quality control disengaging piss poor performers, both vocal and instrumental. As John says, both parties are essentially saying the same thing. So I propose a visit from the mounted division of the 'Helmets, supported by D Division of Humberside Whistles, at the next official Hase gathering, to rattle our tambourine with the best of you both. I'll bring Doug, too. A week is a long time in Mudcat..... Garfield. |

As someone who enjoys both singing and playing tunes, I will continue to haunt both types of session. I was aware that some people thought that Sunday's Nellies session was a bit more 'tuney' than usual. Nothing wrong with that, I think. I just hope that we don't get divided into two camps. I think that we're really in agreement here. Maggie probably wouldn't go to the Hase for instance, as she enjoys singing sessions most, but she is working on her guitar accompaniments and whistle playing in the hope that she can play a full part in a tune session in time. I really enjoyed the only time I went to the Hase, although we were short handed that night. I will be back. Of course, my favourite is accompanied singing. It's great for a singer to get quality accompaniment at a session, and so my tip to anyone who wants to sing at a session that normally has mostly tunes is to sing the kind of song that can be accompanied in a key that the musicians can play in. It might help if the song and the key and the fact that instrumentalists are invited are announced before. Hopefully the musicians will understand that accompanying doesn't just consist of playing the tune, and will play to support the singer. It also helps if the singer chooses a song with a well-known tune and has a voice that can carry above the instruments. And it goes without saying that Ossonflags has these attributes in spades. And if you're a tune player that has wandered into a mainly song session, tell the people about your tunes. Hopefully that will make people more interested in listening and less likely to talk over them. You're including them as listeners, you see. The Friday Kingston session will continue to be tunes and songs and everything else that goes along with it. But that session will always depend on who turns up. I have tried to be helpful here, from the position of someone who has a foot in both camps. I'll get off this soapbox now before it collapses under the weight of my words. Les

As folk music is pretty much a minority interest, I feel it is important that we try to encourage each other and welcome new people to sessions.To me the whole idea of a music/song session is for people to get together and have fun, whilst keeping music live. How about a few of us get together at a MIXED session, either The Kingston (Fridays) or The Tap & Spile (sundays) , both mixed sessions, that way we can perhaps try to integrate the Hull, Hessle and Beverley crowd, who knows maybe a few of the Lincolnshire crowd as well, Gary & Oaklet etc"! I don't have anything to contribute on the subject that has not been eloquently expressed by my peers already. I have my feet firmly in both camps. I love to sing, and I thoroughly enjoy accompanying the tune-meisters also. I was aware of the unusual balance of musicians v singers at Nellies on Sunday, and in my capacity as m/c tried my best to accommodate all to everyones satisfaction. I hope I managed to acheive that. If that wasn't a mixed session, then I don't know what is. We sang. We played. We had bear. We had fun. That's what it is all about for me. My sincere thanks to all who attended. May there be many more enjoyable days like that. Personally, I was extremely pleased to see so many musicians for a change. It has been said often of my session (by musicians) that they don't want to attend due to the high number of singers. It has also been said (by audience/pub regulars) that it can be a bit too finger-in-yer-ear depressing. This is an image that I wish to eradicate. There is room for everyone.
