The long-suffering but ever-present Mrs S has taken our daughter and run off home to mother for a scheduled visit. That leaves me with an empty house, as two other little people that share it with the memsahib and me 9allegidly my issue) have buggered off to yoof club, and won't have finished their alcopops until 9.30pm. Mother thinks I'm staying in all night, and in short, I'm buckered if I know what to do. Urkley is coming on the soot-encrusted bicycle, I do know that, but my plans are still....er.....fluid. There's the Sloop, too, see...... Sireen, I'm missing the Archers......... |

07 Aug 02 - 02:29 AM (#761141) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: Oaklet The interview went according to plan. The suit did look a little like a heavy day at the desalination plant, but I managed to snap the largest crystals off. The only sticky moments were when asked what were my greatest motivators are; I responded with "The voices in me head" and stared in an unfortunate and prolonged manner at the panel. And I regret the bit about my interests outside work. I think that "a bit of DIY" and "doin the garden" was more acceptable to them than explanations about naked cycling with me wife, Gary, my dairy farm and ameteur drivelling. Still, it wasn't a bad performance. I will keep you informed. I did get a bit tired last night and wisely turned down D Whistle Division's offer of a lift. I missed a good session by all accounts. I will try to feel a little less gloomy this evening get me arse down to Goxhill. Cheers everyone.

07 Aug 02 - 08:28 PM (#761586) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Heloo mick, i am glad you enjoid your curry, we was voted the best curry ship last yeer by the Ull Daily Mail, if you like hot currys, you should get a chicken phall, it is 5 times hotter than a vinder loo, if you tell them you are a stewed ant, you will get a 10 percent discount. last night i was at the hase, i saw that tall horse puncher there 9pete) it was good there was loads of peepol there. You should go there sometime, it is an irish session, so yoo could take your'e irish drum, 9dont go next time though, because there isnt a session next time because all the peepol are going to whitby.john |
07 Aug 02 - 09:49 PM (#761614) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull mick PS. i am going to whiby so i will see yoo there, i went last year it was really nice, i saw raggytash at mrs ducks barber queue, mrs duck said i looked miseruble and not talking to her and not having any dinner, but this is because i felt really shit , from having to many bears the night before.we dont see yoo at The tAp & spile anymore, it used to be a good session there, but it is a bit shit now, 9not many peepol going), i told gordon the bass about it, he went and i asked him if he like it, he said "it was a bit shit, because not many peepol there". I think mudcat will be vert quiet at whitby time because all the peepol will be at whitby, yoo can get them portable computers now, 9they are called liptops) but they are really expensive 9about a thousand quid!) probably a big rip off. John the smallpipes-you are, welcome to play my instrument any time you like, i lent my whislte to Willa as well. I still thinking aboot getting one of them irish drums, i dont know yet.john |
08 Aug 02 - 04:19 AM (#761750) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: ossonflags Thanks john, but I verily believe my phal days are over (god, the chalfonts!!)go more now for spicy not heat.next time i see you i will give you my special recipe for brussel sprout curry, excellant and cheap. Thanks for your special invite to the hase, this has been a closely guarded secret, other horse punchers did not tell me about it.Long time since I was in 'ezzle, is hase a boozer? Take your point about Tap,you must understand some of the regular attenders have now left the town,Jock and Sheila to Whitby,Harpmaker and Chrissy to bev. I have talked to Theresa about the poss of a sunday afternoon session once a month based loosly on the very succesful Nellies bev, session and she seemed keen, but as yet not contacted me. I will follow this up on my return from the whitby don't whant to see you gloomy at whitby,if you do feel that way come and have a bear session with me,it will be merry if not exactly cheap.I may well invest in a hamster to keep brian company. re: laptops,I do own one,but will not be taking it as I once saw one of our illustrious mudcatters using one at a sing around in lieu of a song book,we can take technology a little to far.I realy do prefer the Traditional method of actually learning a song before singing it (wharts and all ).Any way it will give us a well deserved rest from the drivel pool. But we shall be back!!!!!!!!!! Drivel on oakiepoos!!! |
08 Aug 02 - 04:52 AM (#761757) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: smallpiper Me Bassic and auntie Sue the piper will (I repeat) will come to the Tap and Spile session afta whitby and I fink jOhn shud use his tallents at perswading utha peepol to come along too. |
08 Aug 02 - 04:55 AM (#761759) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: smallpiper A note on the Hase session it is not an Irish session (this implies fast and furious rigs and jeels) it was origionally a scottish session (started by two scottish smalpipers) but has expanded to include anything and everything musical. Having said that it is first and formost a musicians night although we don't mind the occasional song. |

WAP is very useful too, though more suited to slow airs. However, I do feel a little self- conscious when playing dots projected into my 3D virtual reality helmet, but it is in keeping with the tradition. |

There is nothing more satisfying to see a session gently accompanied by the hum of a multitude of Comaqs and Dells, with a pile of liptop bags stacked behind the piano. And such joy, when a song has finished to see the clamour of the assembled throng as they try to align their infra-red ports to pass on the oral tradition in the time honoured way. Learning the thing from memory indeed. What are you like? |

Oh well never mind all I can say is sorry but all are welcome as I've said before. Its just that the Hase was never intended to be a singers night although we do welcome the occasional songster and have even been known to encourage some singers and discourage others thats just the way it is. Also there's this etiquete thing you know the one; Someone sings a song and everyone has to keep quiet and applaud afterwads yet paradoxically someone plays a tune and all the singers talk loudly all the way through it .... I don't get it, hence the reason I try and avoid singers sessions. Not that I don't like singers I do but there is a time and a place for everything and I should know I play the pipes for gawds sake. |

08 Aug 02 - 12:48 PM (#761978) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: GUEST,ossonflags smallpiper, I find it incredible you didn't know I was a singer when my original "Hase thread" mentioned punch the horse also pretty broad referances to singing,in that and many other threads. Getting a tad confused here, you say all are welcome, then you say you try and discourage some singers, whats all that about,or am I missing the point. In your previose thread you talk about all types of music, well, I have been singing for more years than I care to mention and always thought singing was music. Regarding the "etiquette thing",I have always given best of order to everyone, whether good bad or indifferant, that does include instrumentals. That is not etiquette that is just good manners and respect.Any one who gets up in front of people to do any thing musical or poetical deserves that.Sadly over the years I have observed that kind of respect dissapear, not just in this country but in Ireland as well, were I visit quite a lot.But the thing that realy depresses me is that the people who should know better, musicians/ singers are usually the ones most at fault. Unlike you I do not try and avoid anything musicly,or otherwise, especially places were I can contribute to the event, and hopefully improve and learn a little, and give respect and encouragement to people who have come to do the same.I believe we are missing the point somewere if we keep following the preciouse idea of a time and place for everything and every body. Believe me, I was around during the late fifties and early sixties "Folk Revival" and saw similar attitudes destroy some bloody good folk clubs,as you can see there is not one folk club left in Hull As I said before, thanks for the info.have got the message loud and clear, couldnt be more clearer than after your last post. 08 Aug 02 - 01:25 PM (#761988) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: smallpiper You may not actually realise it but I'm a bit of a PTH fan. I think that what you do is great and I'm not being at all precious the singers I try to discourage at our session are those who think they can sing but can't (one example had the entire pub in an uproar and was embarrasing herself so was asked not to sing but we tollerated her for three sessions before pulling the plug). I've been around a long time too and I've seen the errosion of good manners both here and abroad, but it dosn't mean we have to tollerate it. And I don't think that you've got the message at all in fact I think that you are missing the point completely. I will restate: there are lots of different session some sing arounds, some mixed and some musicians sessions, all are welcome to ours but because of the origional intentions of the session i.e. to allow something different (how many scottish sessions in england do you know of). The session, as all sessions, has changed and as such it is a great melting pot of styles and that is great. But the point is that it is a musicians session that WELCOMES (I repeat WELCOMES) occasional singers. SO tell me whats wrong with that? |

But wakes up and finds the entire thing including the job interview and the spat between Ossonflags and Smallpiper, has been a dream. |
08 Aug 02 - 02:46 PM (#762029) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: smallpiper Spat what spat? Arn't we both saying the same thing but from different angles - welllllll no probably not. However I thhink we are both right in some respects. I suppose I am a bit intollerant of things that I don't like (but hey that's my right) but being a piper I am also aware that pipes are not people's favourite instrument and their very presence in a session can cause people all kinds of problems. I am aware of that and adjust the amount that I contribute to a session accordingly. It was once written that a piper should play no more than 4 sets in a session inorder not to upset people - I tend to stick to that, I could play all night. I try to be considerate can the same be said of someone who sings a 40 verse dirge? |

08 Aug 02 - 03:40 PM (#762052) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: Skipjack K8 It has to be a shower you walk out of for it to be a dream, Oakers. Hmmmm, playing an accordion and having a voice like a goose farting in a fog, I feel eminently well qualified to sit in judgement on this one, as everyones' least favourite sessioneer. And my judgement is............. sessions evolve. I came to the Nag's Head session in Wootton in '97, and I now know it was during a time of change. It was a hard-core tune session of a very high standard of play. Then, it came about that an acapella version of Wheel of Fortune was sung by the entire pub whilst the musos put their fiddles away. Then a good frined of mine started attending, and did the odd song, to a fairly silent accompaniment. Slowly, the hot-shot musicians fell away (allegedly stating it had become too songy) and it has now evolved into a new, equally happy incarnation of mostly tunes, some songs, and a happy enough atmosphere for a Sunday night. So I find in favour of both parties, in that Mick's credentials as a musician make him elligible to do his hallmark roof-raising at the Hase, and John in his difficult mission with quality control disengaging piss poor performers, both vocal and instrumental. As John says, both parties are essentially saying the same thing. So I propose a visit from the mounted division of the 'Helmets, supported by D Division of Humberside Whistles, at the next official Hase gathering, to rattle our tambourine with the best of you both. I'll bring Doug, too. A week is a long time in Mudcat..... Garfield. |

08 Aug 02 - 05:05 PM (#762102) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: Les from Hull Well it seems a good time to put in my two small copper coins' worth. As someone who enjoys both singing and playing tunes, I will continue to haunt both types of session. I was aware that some people thought that Sunday's Nellies session was a bit more 'tuney' than usual. Nothing wrong with that, I think. I just hope that we don't get divided into two camps. I think that we're really in agreement here. Maggie probably wouldn't go to the Hase for instance, as she enjoys singing sessions most, but she is working on her guitar accompaniments and whistle playing in the hope that she can play a full part in a tune session in time. I really enjoyed the only time I went to the Hase, although we were short handed that night. I will be back. Of course, my favourite is accompanied singing. It's great for a singer to get quality accompaniment at a session, and so my tip to anyone who wants to sing at a session that normally has mostly tunes is to sing the kind of song that can be accompanied in a key that the musicians can play in. It might help if the song and the key and the fact that instrumentalists are invited are announced before. Hopefully the musicians will understand that accompanying doesn't just consist of playing the tune, and will play to support the singer. It also helps if the singer chooses a song with a well-known tune and has a voice that can carry above the instruments. And it goes without saying that Ossonflags has these attributes in spades. And if you're a tune player that has wandered into a mainly song session, tell the people about your tunes. Hopefully that will make people more interested in listening and less likely to talk over them. You're including them as listeners, you see. The Friday Kingston session will continue to be tunes and songs and everything else that goes along with it. But that session will always depend on who turns up. I have tried to be helpful here, from the position of someone who has a foot in both camps. I'll get off this soapbox now before it collapses under the weight of my words. Les

Quality control is important and believe it or not I am in favour of giving everyone the chance to show what they can do, if in my opinion they are worth encouraging then I will encourage them and help them in any way I can (short of lending them money) if they are piss poor I will support them too - it might be by pointing them in a different direction but I will not just trash them I will support them. Ossenflaggs you are welcome to sing at the hase any time you want to. 09 Aug 02 - 01:25 AM (#762355) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Well I have just read this whole thread again (i have read it all 3 times since I got in!) and I agree with Oaklet that Les from Hull (no relation, although we share the same last name) makes good sense, and has writed a good message, Mick is a fine singer, as anyone who as been to Nellies or the Tap will know, and John of the smallpipes is a very good piper, as anyone that has been to the Hase on a Tuesday will already know.Like Les, my favourite type of session is mixed ie songs and tunes, thats why, although I hav'nt been for a while because of work commitments, I always try to get to The Kingston whenever I can, in fact, I might pull a sickie, and go there tonight! As folk music is pretty much a minority interest, I feel it is important that we try to encourage each other and welcome new people to sessions. To me the whole idea of a music/song session is for people to get together and have fun, whilst keeping music live. How about a few of us get together at a MIXED session, either The Kingston (Fridays) or The Tap & Spile (sundays) , both mixed sessions, that way we can perhaps try to integrate the Hull, Hessle and Beverley crowd, who knows maybe a few of the Lincolnshire crowd as well, Gary & Oaklet etc"! What do you say guys? |

09 Aug 02 - 05:17 AM (#762427) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: smallpiper A cross region alliance sounds like a great idea and would even go as far as to suggest that we do it to revieve the ailing Tap & Spile session which is (I believe)in mortal danger. 09 Aug 02 - 05:29 AM (#762435) Subject: RE: BS: Punch the Horse 9 Part 9) From: The DeanMeister Well, what a great conversation! Have not been on for a couple of days. I don't have anything to contribute on the subject that has not been eloquently expressed by my peers already. I have my feet firmly in both camps. I love to sing, and I thoroughly enjoy accompanying the tune-meisters also. I was aware of the unusual balance of musicians v singers at Nellies on Sunday, and in my capacity as m/c tried my best to accommodate all to everyones satisfaction. I hope I managed to acheive that. If that wasn't a mixed session, then I don't know what is. We sang. We played. We had bear. We had fun. That's what it is all about for me. My sincere thanks to all who attended. May there be many more enjoyable days like that. Personally, I was extremely pleased to see so many musicians for a change. It has been said often of my session (by musicians) that they don't want to attend due to the high number of singers. It has also been said (by audience/pub regulars) that it can be a bit too finger-in-yer-ear depressing. This is an image that I wish to eradicate. There is room for everyone. I hope you all come back in September. Once again, many thanks. Peter Dean. |
