Another offshoot of the Lazarus song "There was an old man and he lived in Jerusalem" the chorus involves "glory hallelujah ho ro jerum" I would be gratefull for the words if any of you have them. Email me on ookbooks@yahoo.com or follow the thread. Thank you. Gill

There are some lyrics for this is the DT, and these may be what you're looking for:

The rich man and the poor man

There's also been a discussion on this song:

Roy Roger Rum.

I hope this is useful. I've also heard a version with a few extra verses and slightly different words - one version sung by Len Graham and another version (I think) by the Voice Squad.

btw,

what does it mean, 'hi rogerum'?

the whole song sounds like some sort of 'dog latin'

does anyone know?

The way I first heard it was a little different. The story line was the same but the chorus and refrain was made a little easier for people to sing along to. Still doesn't make sense but at least the words are real(ish) ;-)

Hey Roger Rum, Hey Roger Rum
Skin of a Spanish Onion
Oh, what a funny 'un
Glory Hallelujah, Hey Roger Rum

There was also an additional first verse -

There were two Jews who both came from Jerusalem
Glory Hallelujah, Hey Roger Rum
One was rich while the other he was poorium
Glory Hallelujah, Hey Roger Rum

Cheers

someone told me that the Oldham Tinkers did a version of this and perhaps Rolf Harris! Anyone know if this is true?

Yes, the Tinkers did it - that is the version DtG was referring to. Dunno about Rolf, but it's highly likely - he's done everything else!

The first version I learned, some forty or more years ago, had chorus lines of 'Glory Hallelujah, horajarum' and 'Skinny-malinka-doodle-um' just to add more confusion.

The version I now sing is a cross between the Tinkers' version and the earlier one.

Apparently it's the story of Dives and Lazarus...

Here 'tis in DT.

Quite an old ballad based on the Bible story.

Yes, it's based on Luke 16:19-31. :)
I encountered the song in Gordon Dickson's short story "Render Unto Caesar," in the book _Beyond the Dar Al-Harb_. I remember the chorus from when I was a child, though I couldn't recall any of the verses.

I'm looking for recordings of this song, particularly recordings available on YouTube. Can anybody find some and give me links?

All I can find is this one (click) by Dorothy Olsen, and I'm embarrassed to use it.

(the Dorothy Olsen link probably won't work in the U.K. - but you really don't want to hear it....)
