THe Country music Hall of fame CD "The Carter Family" MCAD-10088 has "Answer to Weeping Willow" A.P. Carter recorded June 9 1936 New York. Origional issue Decca 5254. Does anyone know the last word of the 2nd. verse??

Yes she died before I told her That I loved her true and kind And that I did not mean to fool her But she left me here to???????

The word sounds like one of the following. Live on? resign? reside? Any ideas Thanks Allan S.

ANSWER TO WEEPING WILLOW

My love is dead and buried yonder
Beneath the weeping willow tree
What wrecks my life and makes me wonder
Is because she died for me

CHORUS: Then lay me down in death beside her
For she's all this life to me
That I may join and e'er caress her
In a land beyond the sea

Yes she died before I told her
That I loved her true and kind
And that I did not mean to fool her
But she left me to repine

God shall I ever get forgiveness
For the deeds that I have done
And meet up yonder her sweet charming
For I know she did me some
Recorded 6/9/36 New York, NY

Thank you. I had to look up repine in the dictionary. "To ask forgivness" Also for the corection of the last line last verse I had "For I know she bids me come" when it should be " For I know she did me some"

Last line of 4th verse incorrect-

For I know she bids me come.

The second verse was repeated at the end as a 5th verse.

See Carter for this and many other Carter songs.

Dicho:

Please understand that I'm not questioning you at all, but could you give me your source for the line

"For I know she bids me come?"

The reason I'm asking is that there was a discussion about that at an old time music discussion group about 40 or 41 years ago, and from the notes I have from that, the one that is now in the Carter file was deemed the correct one. The only person I referred to in my original notes I listed as MGP, and now I have no idea who that was! Guess I thought I'd remember forever - dumb of me, huh? Anyway, I'd like to update my notes.

Thanks, Lyle

Listening to the recording reissued in the Country Music Hall of Fame Series MCA MCAD 10088 [and it has the same reference as given by Lyle - 9 June 1936], there is no question that the line sung is 'For I know she bids me come'. Carter lyrics are sometimes difficult to decipher, but this line is crystal clear. Anyone who hears something else would have to be deaf - no offence Lyle.

The 'Then lay me down' stanza is repeated twice - before the 'God shall I ever' stanza and as a last stanza.
