Intel reports that on Wednesday, 28 Aug, there will be a chantey sing in Annapolis run by scions of the Royal Mile Pub crowd. Time and place to be determined ... stay tuned.
Cheers,
Brian

Brian-

The last time I was singing chanteys/shanties in Annapolis was back in 1965. We had just sailed in from the Bahamas in a 40-foot ketch and felt a need to celebrate. We stormed ashore and made the rounds of some 13 taverns, taking turns buying rounds, and then made our way back across the harbor bridge toward where our ketch was moored, stopping off at the local yacht club where we had a great time pretending to be sober, hauling one another up and down the carpeted stairs by the heels singing "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor." I believe we were subsequently ushered out. On the way back over the bridge our captain demonstrated his sobriety by standing on the railing and anoiting the waters below. Ah, what a glorious spree!

Thanks for reminding me of it! I would love to join your singing on 8/26 but Maine is just too far.

Charley Noble

sounds fun but sailing into annapolis is not at all easy....

all the venues seem to think their beer is gold , then they all turn out to be nipple and armpit phobic....and if you are a man without a shirt well .....you had might has weel been living prior to the end of segregation....Parking in annapolis is to say the least terrible... I suggest burning annapolis and heading out to some less dreadful burg of which there are still a few in the maryland countryside and even in baltikmore where I recently could actually afford to drink and park both! Whoever convinced kids of the current gneration that beer has to cost over a dollar a glass should be an enemy of the folk. And venues like annapolis really need to just go away.

It would seem that every time I move, the shanty sings wind up near where I *used* to live. Have some fun for me, Charley!

Follow-up report:
On Wednesday, a group of folks completed their initial recon/chantey raid of Annapolis: we got free beer at the Galway Bay on our pub/chantey crawl (who says beer costs over a dollar ...).

The Castlebay on Main Street will accommodate the first of -- we hope -- the regular chantey sings on the third Thursday of every month. First sing is set for 19 September ... about 8pm ...

If you're headed to Annapolis from DC area it will take about an hour; the traffic is horrendous but if you need a chantey fix beyond the one in Wheaton, this is where to get it ...
Cheers,
Brian

It's happening again this Thursday, 17 October, 8pm, Castlebay Pub, Main Street Annapolis -- so if you're not schooner racing in Baltimore and singing on Fells Point, come down to the newest chantey sing in town.

Cheers,

Brian

Hmmmm. Maybe you should invite our Maine based folk group Castle Bay as a featured set at the Castlebay Pub.(Fred & Julia at cslbay@gwi.net).

Have fun!

Are these Chantey Sings still happening at the Castlebay Pub on the 3rd Thursdays? I'll be in the Baltimore/Annapolis area from 9/22 to 9/28 looking for folks who like to swap sea songs.

Great! Thanks for the info. Brian, glad to see you're back in the area. Not much chance I'll make it to the shantey sings until the fall craft season is over but you never know. They are really fun.

Charlie Baum-

Thanks for the website info. I've checked that out and there doesn't appear to be anything scheduled for the time I'll be in the area. On the Fells Point/Wharf Rat Pub thread I'm suggesting we get some folks together there on Wednesday, September 22nd around 8 pm and see if we can do some informal sea music.

Charley Noble

Charlie:

Enjoy Matey. May be a sombre mood with the passing of a founding member of the Ships Co Chanteymen.

Cheers,

Brian

The night's frivolity was somewhat muted by the news of Cyril Tawney's passing.

Myron sang Tom Lewis's tribute "Cyril Said it all Before" and I did my best at "Chicken on a Raft"
