derrymacash - Give Me A Listen

Subject: derrymacash - Give Me A Listen
From: Aidan Crossey

I've posted a number of mp3s at mp3.com.

Original and trad Irish tunes on mandolin, banjo, guitar. Some of the recordings are rough and ready ... think of them as field recordings if you like.

I'd be interested in the views of fellow 'catters.

The recordings can be found at www.mp3.com/Aidan_Crossey.

And while afficionados of Irish music are in surfing mode, you might like to pay a visit to my website Pay The Reckoning, which has much to entertain the mad for trad brigade!

Slán!

A Aidan, a chara chóir,

I had a long listen last night to your MP3s -- even the 'rough' ones are very, very, good. My favorite is your song, 'Donegal'; such a beautiful melody, and the best lyrics of all your original songs that I've heard so far. I've put it on my 'gotta learn this one' list ;-)

Thanks so much for the heads-up on your MP3 site -- I hope the other 'Catters will enjoy your music as much as I have.

Le meas is grá, Áine

(P.S. And your mandolin tunes ain't half bad either - hehehehehe!)

Just 'refreshing' this thread, so you fellow 'Catters will have another chance to listen to one of our master mandolinists, derrymacash . . . go on, click on the blue clicky thing and listen to some fantastic Irish mandolin and some equally fantastic original songs!!

Aidan,

Some lovely stuff, especially the hornpipes. The Donegal song is very very good indeed, congratulations and good luck with it. Some deft picking to be sure.

Áine ...

As they say in my neck of the woods ... away o' that wi' ye!

I'll get you the words and chords in a wee bit.

Jimmy ... many thanks for the kind words of encouragement. I consider myself a mere beginner. When I compare myself against some of the cream of the crop, I despair of ever getting to a standard where I'd be happy ... but enough of such melancholy! Glad you liked what you heard.

This fella is a very talented mandolin/banjo picker and he writes a decent song as well. As we say at home, he's a fair wee chanter. Give him a listen, you'll be glad you did.

Seamus Kennedy PS I'm a sucker for hornpipes myself!

So there, a chara chóir -- You can't pull your forelock on a quote from Séamus, now can ya? ;-) And Teatime at Shay's is no mean guitar playin', either -- just lovely.

Just giving them a listen, now, though I already know I will love them. Thanks for making them available to us, Aidan. I'll be lucky not to wear out the tape you sent before this year is out! As far as I am concerned you are the cream of the crop!

Áine, a chara ...

You're dead right, a recommendation from the boul' Seamus is worth treasuring.

Seamus ... I love hornpipes ... the crooked rhythm, the way they can hold the interest even if played in a very unadorned way. (By the way, I've just got hold of Providence's "A Fig For A Kiss" and their version of "Father Dollard's" nearly gave me a cardiac arrest! Now THERE's a hornpipe I'm going to sit down and larn!)

Kat and Lucy ... go raibh míle ... it's always nice to have feedback from those who take the time.

Slán all!

Aidan

Since I used the word "larn" up above, I'll give youse a wee joke that I heard from Benny Matthews, who ran a "tick" business in Lurgan from his musty oul' house and who travelled all over North Armagh collecting his weekly dues. From what I can mind, a daycent soul! (If ard mhacha's lurking aabout, he can confirm or not as the case may be.)

Anyway ... ahem (clears throat) ...

This wee butt of a fella, not two hands higher than a duck, is scuttlin' through Belfast's Central Station in an awful splutter tae get his train. The sort of a wee quiet fella that wouldn't say boo tae a goose, the swate blindin' him.

But he's in that much of a sud tae get his train, that he's not mindin' where he's goin' and if he doesn't only go full slap intae a big, brassy, gorgeous woman who's comin' the awr way!

The two of them go head over shite on tae the floor, yer man lightin' on top of this buxom, glamorous creature.

"Hi, there!" she shouts. "What do ye 'hink ye're up tae, ye wee strake of piss!"

Yer man's terribly embarrassed and doesn't know what tae say, so blathers out. "I'm awful sorry, love. I'm goin' tae Larne."

Yer woman appraises him with a steely glance, and with a disdainful sneer says "Well, you're not goin' tae l'arn on me!"

Boom boom!

A Aidan, a stór,

Now that joke deserves a thunderous 'bada boom', if ever a joke did! I'll trade you a great line I heard the other night in the film, Raising Arizona -- now, I've watched that film about 20 times, and somehow, this great line missed my ears every time. It's a great one to use when someone starts giving you their 'half a story':

'Oh yeah? Well, if bullfrogs had wings, they wouldn't bump their asses when they jumped, now would they?'

Thanks for the words and chords last night, too. Having a great time with your song. Did you get the Bold Doherty chords I sent you?

Le grá, do chara Áine

Áine,

It's a dreadful joke altogether, mo chroí, but there you go! Benny was a man of simple tastes ...

Anyway, folks. There are a quite a few songs and tunes waiting in the wings ready to make an appearance over the next few weeks ... including The Road Home, Pain To Pay, Ah Go On, a new version of The Mason's Apron ...

Slán ...

(Fuming)

This is a bloody travesty!

An abomination!

To think that a lily-merchant from the papal republic o' Derrymachuckie would ha' the brass neck on him till desecrate "Lorgan Tine".

Ye'd 'hink by the sings o' him that it was one o' theirs.

As the song says ... "Remember the buoy in the water" ... whatever that manes!

Fear God!

I enjoyed hearing your "Hash My Father Scored" parody! One for oul' McKittery to learn.

Maybe he could go one further and write a parody of thon other oul' bitterness number you parody in the same song.

I can just see oul' Isaac singin' "The Green Grassy Smoke From The Bong".

PS I'm feeling a tad fragile today after countless pints of Dave's homebrew. Woke up with a does of the "oh-no"s.

Deda & Áine ...

Well, what with all the stuff I've got myself involved in ... such as trying to record The Humours Volume Two single-handedly, and running up against the limits of my abilities in the process, in two or three weeks flat (see the thread on Humours of Lewisham, Volume Two), I've been a tad busy.

But after such cajolin', I'll try to get around to it. Honest.

Beannacht.
