I couldn't find this in the DT, or the forum, but maybe the search isn't working, or maybe I'm not working.

There are several songs called Slipknot. However, this is the Woody Guthrie Slipknot (Hangknot, Slipknot), or at least the version I have of it.

Oh, did you ever see a man tie a slip knot, (2x)
Well I've seen it many a time, Lord, he winds and he winds
After thirteen times he's got him a slip knot.

Tell me will that slip knot slip, not it will not (2x)
Oh my brother was a slave, lord, he tried to escape
They left him there to rot on that slip knot

Tell me who makes the laws of that slip knot (2x)
Tell me who, yes, who is going down to the calaboose
To help that hangman string up that slip knot

I don't know who makes the laws of that slip knot (2x)
But the bones of many a man are whistling in the wind
Because we make our laws by that slip knot
Because we tie our laws by that slip knot.

Hope this is what you seek. -- ~:o) Mary

Taking a wild ass guess that your're asking about the Grateful Dead song. Well there are no lyrics. It's an instrumental break between Help on the Way and Franklin's Tower on the "Blues for Allah" album and usually played as a set on stage also. Grateful Dead lyrics can be found here

another note to Mary

Your response stimulated my memory of Woody's version.

I recall two separate verses

Tell me will that slipnot slip, no it will not (2x)
It'll slip round your neck but it wont slip back again
That slipknot lord, that slipknot

Have you ever lost a brother to that slipknot (2x)
my brother was a slave lord he tried to escape
they left him there to rot on that slipknot.

All other verses are as I recall
thanks again

A few verses that I sing...

Did you ever lose your father on that slipknot?
Did you ever lose your father on that slipknot?
Yes, my father was a slave, and he tried to run away,
And they dragged him to his grave, on that slipknot.

Did you ever lose your brother on that slipknot?
Did you ever lose your brother on that slipknot?
Yeah, they hung him to a pole and they shot him full of holes,
God damn their bloody souls and their slipknot!

Did you ever lose your sister on that slipknot?
Did you ever lose your sister on that slipknot?
Yes, my sister tried to vote, and they took six feet of rope,
And left her their to choke on that slipknot.

If you're white you might beat that slipknot,
If you're you might be cut loose from that slipknot,
But if you're brown or black you'll dance, broken neck and stinking pants,
You ain't got no earthly chance to beat that slipknot.

Some of the words are Woody Guthrie's, some are my own, and some are by a friend from New York.
