Memorial Service Threads?

I feel like an idiot, but I can't seem to get anything of use to come up in the filter, no matter how many permutations of funeral/memorial/etc. music I try. I've been invited to sing at a Hospice Light up a Life service in December and am in need of fitting material. If anybody could point me to the even one of the many threads of this sort I've seen over the last 2 years I'd appreciate it.

Using the filter box on the main thread page with the word "funeral," and setting the age filter box to "All." You will get a whole BUNCH of threads, among them:

Tune Req: Festive music for funerals

Req: Wake songs (NOT Funeral Songs!)

What song do you want at your funeral?

BS(sorta?)/Help-Playing for funerals

Help: Funeral hymn

Music and Poems for a Funeral

Help: Funeral Song

I'm supposed to be at a funeral...

Funeral Tunes, songs that heal

Mudlark, is it for a Hospice Volunteer recruitment or recognition event?

Susan...first off, thanks for the thread help...I tried typing in those words but set the time span for 1 year.

This is an annual commemorative service held outide in the local park. Lights, sponsored by those honoring someone who has died, are strung on a huge pine and then, at the service the tree is lit. To be honest, I've never been to one, but have been volunteering this past year, thru Hospice, singing at convalescent homes. And I suppose the music director, knowing my husband died last year, thought I might be interested in participating on more than one count.

Thanks again for thread direction...Nancy

I've now waded through all of those (this is an amazing place!) and have come up with more poetry than song that seems to me suitable for for a program that is not directly religious in any way. My own choices so far are The May Song (last verse:The life of man is but a span, he flourish as the flower. He's here today, has not long to stay, And is gone in an hour), John O'Dreams, Wayfaring Stranger (religious, but such an old standard, like Amazing Grace, that I can't see it offending anyone), and James T's "Close Your Eyes"

I'm sure the music dir. will have some input but I'd be glad to take suggestions, if anyone has any. I've time to learn something new if it seems right.

Nancy, what song comes to mind that commemorates your husband and your love for one another?

Susan...Because of some of the parallels I always think of John when I'm singing (I'll keep the old place) Till The Children Come Home...couldn't sing it at all for a while. It's a great song, I don't know who wrote it...Aussie for sure.

Other than that, I've nothing specific...partly, I think, because I've not "synthesized" the pain into specific music yet. Maybe next year.... Besides, if I'm going to have to sing in front of a big crowd I'd be afraid of losing it if the song was too personal...I'm still trying to work up the nerve to comply with a request to sing for tasters at a local winery!

Will keep looking thru these threads...thanks again.

ML,

I think ya gotta go with your heart. I have a feeling most of the songs people listed were listed after they had done that very thing.

Feel free to PM me about how this is for you if that would be helpful. Been thinking aboutcha.

I had a similar problem trying to find songs for a "celebrating the life of" service or songs about the continuity between this life and beyond, so I started this thread:

Songs about 'Crossing Over'

And that thread also has links to other related threads.
