Hi Tomas I was hoping someone would have this in digital format and I woudn't have to type it in, but it looks like I get to practice my touch typing. I'll do it in the next 8 hours, or less if I get the chance.

DON'T GET MARRIED, GIRLS.
written by Leon Rosselson.
published by him in his book "That's Not the Way It's Got to Be" (1973)
Recorded by him on "Love, Loneliness, Laundry" Acorn Records CF271

Don't get married, girls; you'll sign away your life.
You may start off as a woman but you'll end up as the wife.
You could be a vestal virgin, take the veil and be a nun,
But don't get married, girls, for marriage isn't fun.

It's fine when you're romancing and he plays a lover's part.
You're the roses in his garden; you're the flame that warms his heart,
And his love will last for ever and he'll promise you the moon,
But just wait until you're wedded and he'll sing a different tune.
You're his tapioca pudding; you're the dumplings in his stew,
And he'll soon begin to wonder what he ever saw in you.
Still he takes without complaining all the dishes you provide,
But, you see, he has to have his bit of jam tart on the side.

So, don't get married, girls; it's very badly paid.
You may start off as the mistress but you'll end up as the maid.
Be a daring deep-sea diver; be a polished polyglot,
But don't get married, girls, for marriage is a plot.

Have you seen him in the morning with a face that looks like death?
He's got dandruff on his pillow and tobacco on his breath,
And he wants some reassurance with his cup of tea in bed,
'Cos he's got worries with the mortgage and the bald patch on his head,
And he's sure that you're his mother, lays his head upon your breast,
So you try to boost his ego, iron his shirt and warm his vest,
Then you get him off to work; the mighty hunter is restored,
And he leaves you there with nothing but the dreams you can't afford.

So, don't get married, girls; men are all the same.
They just use you when they need you; you'd do better on the game.
Be call-girl; be a stripper; be a hostess; be a whore,
But don't get married, girls, for marriage is a bore.

When he comes home in the evening, he can hardly spare a look.
All he says is 'What's for dinner?'; after all, you're just the cook,
But when he takes you to a party, he eyes you with a frown,
And you know you've got to look your best; you mustn't let him down.
Then he'll clutch you with that 'Look what I've got' sparkle in his eyes,
Like he's entered for a raffle and he's won you for the prize,
But when the party's over, you'll be slogging through the sludge,
Half the time a decoration and the other half a drudge.

So, don't get married; it'll drive you round the bend.
It's the lane without a turning; it's the end without an end.
Change your lover every Friday; take up tennis; be a nurse,
But don't get married, girls, for marriage is a curse.

(Coda)
Then you get him off to work; the mighty hunter is restored,
And he leaves you there with nothing but the dreams you can't afford.

Sorry, Helen.

I'm not sorry at all. I was hoping I wouldn't have to type it all in, and doubly happy now that I am reminded what a long song it is. Always liked this song - especially the looks some men get on their faces when the women laugh out loud. I guess it is retaliation for all those mother-in-law jokes we've put up with for years. ;->

Don't get married, girls. You'll sign away your life.
You may start off as a woman, but you'll end up as the wife.
You could be a vestal virgin, take the veil, or be a nun,
But don't get married, girls, for marriage isn't fun.
Oh, it's great when you're romancing and he plays the lover's part.
You're the flowers in his garden. You're the flame that warms his heart.
And his love will last forever and he'll promise you the moon,
But just wait until you're married and he'll sing a different tune.
You're his tapioca pudding. You're the dumplings in his stew,
But he'll soon begin to wonder what he ever saw in you.

You may start off as the mistress, but you'll end up as the maid.
Be a daring deep sea diver. Be a polished polyglot,
But don't get married, girls, for marriage isn't hot.
Have you seen him in the morning with a face that looks like death,
With dandruff on his pillow and tobacco on his breath?
Still he needs some reassurance with his cup of tea in bed,
'Cos he's worried 'bout the mortgage and the bald patch on his head,

GUEST - The tune is in ABC format - a text based system for notating tunes, especially suited for melody lines.

The standard reference is: The ABC home page (this has introduction to ABC and list of software for playing and converting ABC to print formats amongst other stuff)

but there are Mudcat threads explaining it also; see for example:

Mudcat ABC Tune Guide
What is abc format

(If you type ABC in the Filter box and set the Age drop-down to 3 years and press Refresh you'll find some other threads about ABC)

Subject: Lyr Add: DON'T GET MARRIED BOYS
From: michaelr

The blatant male-bashing of the preceding song so dismayed me that I felt compelled to compose the following rebuttal.

DON'T GET MARRIED, BOYS

Don't get married, boys, you'll be a slave for life
All the wages that you sweat for, you must give them to your wife
Get a spaniel, get a fast car, get a mistress, get the clap
But don't get married, boys, for marriage is a trap

In her wedding vows she swore to love you, sickness and in health
But you'll all too soon discover what she really wants is wealth
And she'll prod you and she'll nag you, get a job for better pay
Then she's crying and complaining you spend too much time away

Oh she never went to college and she never earned the bread
But she doesn't have to worry, she can get divorced instead
All she needs is an attorney, and it goes from bad to worse
And the next time that you look, well, half of what you had is hers

So don't get married, boys, she'll throw you to the hounds
Well you wed a slender beauty, now she weighs three hundred pounds
Be a monk or be a swinger, be a sailor, play punk rock
But don't get married, boys, for marriage is a crock
Be a choirboy or a faggot, be a sorcerer, date a witch
But don't get married, boys, for marriage is a… whole lot of trouble

While you're building your career the little woman just gets bored
And she'll leave you there with nothing but the dreams you can't afford

Cheers,
Michael

Subject: Lyr Add: FLYING SAUCERS and EVER SINCE EVE
From: reggie miles

michaelr, Wow! What a come back!!! You took the words right out of my keyboard. I was just about to post one with similar sentiments that I just started singing. I've had this song waiting in the wings for about twenty years. It's called "Flying Saucers".

Our marriage used to be,
like the sweetest harmony.
Everything was peachy at the start.
But like a rocket to the moon,
it was over much too soon.
The day she hit my head she broke my heart.

(on the record, during this point in the song, between the verse and the chorus, there's the sound of dinner plates crashing and a man's voice moaning. It's not easily reproduced in a live performance so I just yell out OWWW!)

(chorus) Flying saucers, flying saucers, flying from the hands of my wife.
Flying saucers, cups and saucers, are breaking up my happy wedding life.

Last night I sure was blist,
when she threw a plate and missed.
I cried this is goodbye to our romance.
But she pleaded as she said,
tho the plate just missed your head,
I'm your wife and I deserve a second chance.

OWWW!

Chorus

So to science I declare,
for those rockets in the air,
you don't have to look to Jupiter or Mars.
You can solve this mystery.
Find a woman who is free.
Marry her and you will soon be seeing stars.

OOWWWW!

Chorus

Then there's this old tune I do call "Ever Since Eve"

Adam was as happy as a man could be,
till Eve brought up the subject of the apple tree.
He listened to a woman that's a losin' game,
and brother if you try it you will learn the same.

They'll trap you with their glamour when you call around.
Before you know what hit you boy you're altar bound.
And when the preacher says to honor and obey,
it's only you he's talkin' to and how you'll pay.

Chorus: Ever, ever since Eve.
Men have cried while women deceive.
You trust a gal and then she's gone.
Believe me it's been going on.
Ever, oh ever since Eve.

You meet a gal and take her out to dine and dance.
She leads you on, but brother you don't stand a chance.
She'll help you spend your money and when you've got no more,
she's gonna shake your hand, say goodbye and slam the door.

Now, I ain't sayin' women aren't here to stay.
Half the married folks are women, so they say.
But none of them is ever gonna get me hooked.
Cuz brother, when that happens, your goose is cooked.

Chorus

The boys and I are gonna take a holiday.
We're gonna buy a little island far away.
We'll smoke cigars and flick the ashes 'round the tent.
We'll gamble and we'll fish to our heart's content.

We're gonna eat our dinner in our shorts and socks,
and when we're through we'll break the dishes on the the rocks.
There isn't gonna be a woman in the crowd.
We're gonna hang a sign that says, no gals allowed.

Chorus

I think I'll sing both your version and the original song back to back together, just for balance. Why offend half an audience when you can alienate everybody all at once. That's what I always say.

It's anti-marriage rather than anti-male. That's why the Dubliners were able to sing it with such wicked relish.

Oops, in that last verse of Flying Saucers it should read,

So to science I declare, for those "saucers" in the air.... (not "rockets")

I know it's a minor typo and most may not consider it important enough to bother with but in the interest of self preservation I'd rather not suggest that they use anymore ammo than they already have to sling.

DON'T GET MARRIED, GIRLS
Leon Rosselson

Don't get married girls - you'll sign away your life,
You may start off as a woman but you'll end up as the wife.
You could be a vestal virgin, take the veil and be a nun,
But don't get married girls, for marriage isn't fun.

Oh it's fine when you're romancing and he plays a lover's part
You're the roses in his garden, you're the flame that warms his heart.

So don't get married girls - it's very badly paid
You may start off as the mistress but you'll end up as the maid.
Be a daring deep-sea diver, be a polished polyglot,
But don't get married girls, for marriage is a plot.

Have you seen him in the morning with a face that looks like death,
He's got dandruff on his pillow and tobacco on his breath.
And he wants some reassurance, with his cup of tea in bed,
'Cos he's got worries with the mortgage and the bald patch on his head.
And he's sure that you're his mother, lays his head upon your breast.
So you try to boost his ego, iron his shirt and warm his vest.
Then you get him off to work - the mighty hunter is restored
And he leaves you there with nothing but the dreams you can't afford.

So don't get married girls for men are all the same,
They just use you when they need you, you'd do better on the game.
Be a call girl, be a stripper. be a hostess, be a whore
But don't get married girls, for marriage is a bore.

When he comes home in the evening, he can hardly spare a look,
All he says is "What's for dinner?", after all you're just the cook.
And he'll clutch you with that "Look what I've got!" sparkle in his eyes,
Like he's entered for a raffle, and won you for a prize,
But when the party's over, you'll be slogging through the sludge,
Half the time a decoration and the other half a drudge.

So don't get married - it'll drive you round the bend
It's the lane without a turning it's the end without an end.
Change your lover every Friday, take up tennis, be a nurse,
But don't get married girls for marriage is a curse.

And you get him off to work - the mighty hunter is restored
And he leaves you there with nothing but the dreams you can't afford.

It wasn't in the DT, but I found it in some threads from June 2001. Type in 'don't get married' and it comes up with a lot of links to previous discussions, including the tune. Don't know if guest status will let you open those threads, but it's worth it.

It's in the DT HERE, but there are a couple of lines (which are in the versions above) which are missing from the DT version:

Then he takes you to a party and he eyes you with a frown
And you know you've got to look your best you mustn't let him down

I'ved nagged Dick Greenhaus about this several times, but to no avail.

I have been looking for the Mel Blanc version of flying saucers for years. I can't find it anywhere though. I had it as a kid. On one side, there was Bugs Bunny singing Flying Saucers, and on the flip side, it was Porky Pig singing K-K-K-Katie. Anyone know where I can obtain a copy? I'm getting desperate. lol

Michaelr--thanks--brilliant parody.

Met Leon Rossleson at a house concert--asked him to sing that song---he looked uncomfortable doing it, and was somewhat puzzled as to how I heard of it...

Cheers, guys! Glad you like it -- anyone who does, feel free to perform it.
