08 Sep 02 - 09:01 AM (#779047) Subject: search for lyrics PLEASE HELP! From: GUEST,cwrd1ylion@hotmail.com Hi guys, I have been looking for the words to two songs for the better part of a year now. I guess it's time to ask for help! I am seeking a song with the chorus, "the future is as big and as wide as Dublin Bay, Foghorn cutting like a scythe upon the hay, months will pass you by to the stroke of New Years Day..." The second song I believe was written by Colm Gallagher and recorded by Tommy Makem, but I still can't find. It's called, "If I were a dog". "Singin Yo ho, yo ho If I were a dog I'd have me day, Yo ho, yo ho wouldn't I be waggin me tail" If anyone has them and is willing to share, I would be very grateful! Thanks.... Rock on John P |

08 Sep 02 - 04:02 PM (#779200) Subject: Lyr Add: IF I WAS A DOG (Colm Gallagher) From: fulurum IF I WERE A DOG Colm Gallagher 1. If I was a dog, I'd wag me tail And sit me down beside the fire. Girls could pat me on the head Or anywhere else their hearts desire. I wouldn't be chasin' after cats. I wouldn't be howlin' at the moon. I wouldn't be bothered with things like that. If I was a dog, what I'd be doin'! CHORUS: O ho! O ho! If I was a dog, I'd have me day. O ho! O ho! Wouldn't I be waggin' me tail? 2. If I was a dog, I'd eat the best, And only the best that money could buy. I'd be in the butcher's shop Lickin' the leg of the butcher's wife. I'd be feedin' on filet mignon, Pelican fingers and lobster fins, And delicate frogs. If I was a dog, I'd never go rootin' in somebody's bins. CHORUS 3. If I was a dog, I wouldn't be on For herdin' sheep or chasin' hares. I wouldn't be snorin' in me sleep, Or diggin' a hole to God-knows-where. I wouldn't be much for pullin' a sled Like huskies up in the Yukon do. I'd prefer to be home in me bed With a Pekinese, poodle or Kerry blue. CHORUS 4. And woe betide the fella who tried To spay the wife or neuter me. Before I'd let him away with that, Begob! I'd show him me pedigree. Oh, I'd put up a hell of a fight And wouldn't it be a sight to see? With one strategic nip, The neuterer becomin' the neuteree. CHORUS 5. And sooner or later, I'd father a litter And teach the little ones how to be. If ever they tried to get smart, by Jasus, I'd chase the lot o' them up a tree. So if you're travellin' down the street, And a handsome dog you happen to see, Steppin' it out, give him a shout, 'Cause you could be you, and that could be me. CHORUS From Colm Gallagher's 'Reel in the Flickering Light'. Gordon Bok recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFDwdu01OHk |

I got this song from Tommy Makem. I think he told me that Colm used to play bass for him in NY City. Colm also made the words for “I Held a Lady,” an old favorite of mine.
If I was a dog I’d wag me tail, I’d sit me down beside the fire
And the girls could pat me on the back or anyplace else their heart would desire
I wouldn’t be after chasing cats, I wouldn’t go baying at the moon
I wouldn’t have time for things like that
If I was a dog, what I’d be doing!
Oh-ho, oh-ho, if I was a dog I’d have me day
Oh-ho, oh-ho, wouldn’t I be waggin’ me tail
If I was a dog I’d eat of the best and only the best that money could buy
I’d go down to the butcher’s shop and I’d lick the leg of the butcher’s wife
I’d be dining on filet mignon and pelican fingers and lobster fins
And delicate frogs, if I was a dog I wouldn’t go rooting in nobody’s bins
I wouldn’t be after chasing sheep, I wouldn’t be after hunting hares
I’d prefer to be home in me sleep or digging a hole to God knows where
I wouldn’t be after pulling the sled like huskies up in the Yukon do
I’d prefer to be home in me bed with a Pekinese, Poodle or Kerry Blue
And woe betide the fool that tried to spay the wife or neuter me
Before I’d let him away with that, by God I’d show me pedigree
I’d put up a hell of a fight and wouldn’t that be a sight to see
One strategic nip, the neuterer becoming the neuteree
And sooner or later I’d father a litter and teach the little ones how to be
And if any of them tried to get smart, be-God, I’d chase the lot of ‘em up a tree
So if you’re walking along the street and an elegant dog you happen to see
Steppin’ it out, give us shout; you could be you and that would be me
If I Was a Dog is recorded on the album Because You Asked. |
