I'm putting together musical sketch for public performance with a cast of around fifty 8 to 11 year-olds on the theme of pirates. Songs and tunes that I have already chosen are "What shall we do with the Drunken Sailor", the "Trumpet Hornpipe" (AKA Captain Pugwash) and a Ralph Reader song called "The Buccaneers". I could do with another bright, lively, song with a rousing chorus that would involve all the kids.

Any ideas?

Well down this way 'The Wiggles' (from Australia) are big time kids entertainment. One of their 'friends' is Captain Feathersword, who sings a couple of fun songs.

Are you looking for songs ABOUT pirates, or songs credibly to have been sung by pirates?

What, with lyrics as - The Turk, the Arab and the Spaniard - will soon have pennies on their eyes.
And - the cutlass harvested.

Man ,you beat me to it and well done indeed. The words to one of the best , and my persoanl favorite , tour de force pieces ever created by ELP with lyrics written by former King Crimson bandmate to Grag Lake; Pete Sinfield just role off the tongue in a rhthym all their own .

Personally I would just *love* to see someone transpose the lyrics from the far more elaborate orchestrations of this performance piece to something that could be performed accompanied with a single instrument; my preference being a 12 string.

However , for kids , one would have to edit out the pirates debauchery celebration part......

".......make it a cup for a sea dog's thirst ,_ 12 long long years of bones and beaches_ fever and leeches_ did their worst_

So fill the night_ with paradise_ bring me peach and pecans_ till I burst_ but first_

The rest from here on to the finale returns to being uncontraversial.

Damn it I couldn't find which storage crate has the LP version of the ELP "Works" album with the lyrics printed. Perhaps someone will be so gracious to publish the words because they really are a storyteller's poem.

I recently wrote a pirate song, expanding on the wonderful "Pirates of Penzance." In PoP only the first verse and the chorus of the following are original; the rest I added. Lots of potential action that the kids would like (e.g. "bop on the head" ....) Like it?

What about Smith of Bristol? It's easy to learn and has a chorus where everyone can join in. (I have a recording by the Dubliners, don't know if anyone besides them recorded it.)

And, even though it's a shanty and not a pirate song, Whip Jamboree would also be great, I think!

While privateers are not the same as pirates (if they work according to the powers given them in their Letters of Marque and Reprisal), Barrett's Privateers MIGHT be good.

If you want a bright and bouncy tune try the theme tunes from "The Bucaneers" (a TV series of the mid 1950s), see Whirlygig TV look up "Children's TV", highlight "Ivanhoe" and click on "The Bucaneers" - You'll need Real Player to play the tune.

ok.....here are a few songs(more shanties really) that your kids could try if their fairly musically inclined: Ar Fa La La Low, Cape Cod Girls (easy song to modify),Haul Away Joe, The Last Shanty, Mingulay Boat Song,Mrs. McGraw(McGrath),South Austrailia,. I found most of these at Cantaria.com they have accompanying music so you can get a feel for the song.......hope it helps.

Be sure to tell them about wenching, murer, theft, kidnapping, and buggary.

Or if you want a "safe" song - try Disney's "Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho, A Pirate's life for me."

Thanks for all the replies - lots to go at. It might take me a little while to browse and make a selection but I rather like Snuffy's idea of an action song.

The Ralph Reader "Bucanneers" has good bloodthirsty words although it is quite difficult for youngsters to sing and a little bit dated in is style but, as I'm using it in a Gang Show, I have a special reason for including it. Snuffy's suggestion is a simple song which will provide the sketch with balance.

The show is not until February so I will report back then to let you know how the performance went.

Almost any sea shanty.

Lots of Web Sites including www.portroyalprivateers.org and www.noquartergiven.net. No Quarter Given is a quarterly magazine devoted to pirate reenactment and the golden age of piracy. Also, look up The Bilge Pumps. They are really funny singing group dressed up as pirates.

A good sea shanty like PAddy Lay Back, while not necessarily about pirates is nice for kids because of the "Call and Response" in it.
